I just hit champion for the first time ever in doubles. Before TrueSkill 2, I always hovered around Onyx 1600 in doubles, and was never close to being champion level. Whenever I played champions I always got smoked.
Just then, I was about Onyx 1520 and then I won and suddenly became Champion 179?! I remember Champion always being around 1900-2000. I won 3 more games playing against diamonds and now I’m 172. I understand Onyx is harder to achieve now, but I feel like most champions in doubles now are actually not anywhere near as good as the previous system. I definitely haven’t improved that much, and I never use a mic (nor do my teammates). Something is definitely off, tbh.
Champions are the top 200 Onyx players. It could be that there aren’t yet 200 Onyx players in Doubles yet. Or, it could be that there are just around 200 Onyx players. Either way, I’d expect it to be a population issue; especially considering that Doubles always tends to be in the lower half of the playlist popularity list.
Also note that before Trueskill2, it was more common for people to have inflated CSRs. Though it is possible that as the season progresses, those players who previously achieved CSRs of 1900+ will get back there again, increasing the threshold for Champ rating. I’d say just enjoy your Champ status for as long as you have it.
Most of the champions in the Doubles leaderboard are in the 1500’s and there’s only one person who’s mid 1900’s so it’s not that high this season.
