Trailers vs. Game Disconnect SPOILERS

So I just completed the game and was very happy with the story. The only thing I don’t understand is the trailer where ONI says Master Chief is dead. Obviously he isn’t, but what would ONI’s motivation be for even saying that in the first place?

This isn’t the only disconnect either. The extended universe plot around the new insurrection is never addressed at all in the games. The only hint of this is how Osiris isn’t entirely welcome on Meridian.

A third question I had that is slightly off topic is how did Halsey actually know Cortana was still alive let alone dangerous? This might be explained in the final issue of Escalation but I doubt it.

In conclusion I thought the story was really good, but I just had a few lingering questions about it.

Up until half-way through the game (or more) everyone thinks the Chief is helping summon Guardians, resulting in widespread destruction. It is only until the last 3 levels that anyone knows that the Chief thinks Cortana is a threat too, thus bringing Osiris and Blue Team on the same side again.

This.

Basically, Locke hunting the Chief starts with Maridian, and the Sanghelios arch of the story is a means to continue hunting him.
I think putting out that he was dead was something to do with hunt the truth, i cant quite remember.

Huh? How?
He was on a mission when he said he was going to Meridian on a possible contact with Cortana.
At the end of mission one Halsey reveals that she contacted Infinity and told them about Cortana 3 weeks before.
Who thinks 117 is doing anything but going after Cortana on his own?

The reason for labeling the Master Chief as dead had a lot to do with Hunt the Truth as well as Fred and Palmer’s comments about the chief pushing himself and him doing what he wanted. In Hunt the Truth the Chief was accused of killing a bunch of civilians, which turned out to be terrorists. His actions were definitely not ONI approved though. Then he goes AWOL looking for Cortana and showing up on planets where Guardians are rising. ONI didn’t want to kill the chief, but, as Mishak says in HtT, they wanted to cement his legacy. If you take a look at the orders Locke got, which come in different editions of the game, he was supposed to bring the Chief in, not kill him. I think they were just prepared to count the Chief as a loss and possibly put him down.

yeah my current theory is that there was originally a very different story and it changed dramatically for some reason.

the advertising doesn’t line up with what we got, the 2 cutscenes from the MCC with Locke and the Arbiter don’t fit into the game, and the end of Fall of Reach in the present doesn’t make any sense in relation to Halo 5’s story.

It’s better to have a hero die then to let people see him fall. Only like 4 people knew Anakin Skywalker was Darth Vader, so he was remembered as a hero who died fighting to protect the Jedi, not the dude who murdered a bunch of kids and became a dark lord of evil.
