I don’t understand how what looks to be a choose your path / make decisions sort of game is going to work in terms of the lore and canon.

Probably because it won’t be a choose your path game. They’re just setting up the dynamic and showing that there are two sides to this story, and neither can be entirely true.
In the first half of the chief trailer, I wonder… Was he talking to himself?
