I’ve been playing Halo 5 a lot. And must have invested 20,000+ hours through Halo CE to Halo 4. Don’t let the gamertag fool you, I have 3 different accounts at SR50+. I mainly play slayer and arena, and here’s what I find to be common things toxic players say. Sure there’s players who betray or badmouth their team, but this is for players who play more for themselves than for the team. What’s worse: they can’t change their style of play because they refuse to. I’m not saying these players are poor skilled, but it’s hard to find chemistry/success with players like this:
"Where’s my team?! No one has my back!"
I find this from players to trail off from their team assuming they are being covered by their teammates. They usually have short lifespan since they are always outnumbered. Never assume you have backup, and if you do, don’t rely on it.
"…I’m not touching the objective"
Yes, slaying has an important role in objective games, but when the game is on line and a player refuses to play the objective because they only want to slay, there’s a good chance the other team will play the objective and win.
"I’m having a bad game, I’m not trying anymore."
Sure players have bad games, but guess what, the rest of your team still want to win and may not be having good games. For one player to throw in the towel usually snowballs into a loss. Can be worse than being a 4 v 3 since that player is feeding the other team kills faster.
"my k/d is horrible, I’m going to hide"
Now, there’s a smart way to hide and a bad way to hide. A bad way to hide is to be in an area where you can’t help your team in anyway and the game ends up being a 4 v 3 since they took themselves out of the game and may spawn their teammates over and over again in a poor position. They think they are helping the team, but really are putting them at a disadvantage.
The smart way to hide is to be a very elusive player while keeping on the move helping your team in anyway (cleaning up kills, calling out, camping with close range weapons) ready to retreat or hide at anytime, but also move from cover when needed.
"Why do I suck so much? I was doing so well last game"
Adapting is very important in matchmaking. Not every player you face plays the same way as the previous player. When you’re in a party of 4 similarly skilled players, and you are constantly having negative k/d games while your team has positive k/d (with a game or two of you having a positive k/d after a string of negative k/d games), there’s a good chance you are not adapting or changing your play style. One dimensional players end up suck in an “auto-pilot” mode while versatile players tend to have more success.
