I have been watching halo 5 beta gameplay footage numerous times, and even then i feel claustrofobic.
Do you think that halo 5 beta’s field of view was too narrow? For me it causes motion sickness with a 50 inch TV. Halo 3, as awesome as it is, is a great example of a game with too narrow FOV.
Wider FOV in my opinion would make the gameplay more pleasant for many people, graphics would look better with more depth in the area. Also the gameplay would be faster (i feel like thats exactly what they are after.)
Wider is always better as far as I’m concerned. 90 degrees is the minimum I find acceptable. Mind you, ideally we would have a slider, because different people have different tastes.
H1 being 90 is what I initially got used to then when H2 came out everything felt too narrow, by the time H3 came out I was used to it and it seemed normal. 90 degree FoV looks too wide for me now but I guess it’s a preference thing.
I’m guessing the reason why the FOV is locked narrower than most FPSheads would like is a performance thing rather than an artistic choice.

It increases the peripheral vision of the first person camera, which would help with spotting enemies. It also appears to increase the camera speed, but that is just an effect of the increased FoV. The player does not actually move faster, but it appears like you do.

Realism? In a game with FTL travel, Aliens, Space Zombies, Roid Raging super soldiers, and weapons firing bullets in the 26th century, you think it is because of realism? It’s because of the fact that people typically play console games from their couch, which is at least 4 ft away from the player, and therefore, from what I understand, don’t need the increase in FoV.
Which I call bullcrap. Increased FoV is always a good thing. Couch gamer or not.

I don’t think that helmets are the reason for tunnel-vision. With any kind of helmet, the edges would be close enough to your face that you would see at least 120 degrees from left to right at the same time.
A wider fov would be greatly appreciated. One that that always bothers me when I move from playing on FPS’ on pc to console is the narrowed fov.
At least on a lot of PC games there’s a slider or you can use console commands to move it to something more comfortable, like 90 or higher (i’m not much into 120 though, then you get that weird warping effect) but when I jump on my xbox, games are often shoved down to where I feel like I got tunnel vision. I remember Battlefield 2 Modern Combat for xbox being particularly bad about this.
