This post is geared towards newer players who are having trouble with this game.
I have literally spent the last week or so crushing people with a relatively simple Warthog rush strategy. Something I think that most of my opponents have failed to understand is that this game can only be won through speed. Try making units before upgrading them. I can spend all of 3 minutes in a game and force a resignation or cripple an opponent easily because I too often find flashing lights on your production slots, and yet nothing comes out to defend against me. If you are really new or need help, message me after spending 30 or so minutes browsing this forum. A site that I recommend for those who want hardcore strategy is halowarslegion.com. Try this strategy, too: https://forums.halowaypoint.com/yaf_postst226984_I-need-a-succesful-build-strategy.aspx (I give credit for its core to Diablo Soul)
I am willing to help anyone interested. My gamertag is the same as my username.
Also: To the more experienced readers, I post this because there once was a time when we all got crushed. I also post it because I want a bit more than a 5 minute game against someone who has little to no experience. Being honest, I am pretty new myself. If anybody would like to offer opinions about the strategy I linked, feel free to do so. I am very much open to new strategy and could use a high-level mentor, I want to make the jump from basic strategy to complex and advanced strategy.
Commenting on the strategy you provided a link to in the OP. First off tech 2 is way too early, you shouldn’t be delaying hogs that much for quicker gren because as soon as you face someone who also goes hogs you lose the hog fight because they have more hogs than since they were able to constantly pump. Second, there is no set strategy for every map/situation (I think you already know this but felt I should cover it anyway) the strategy you outlined is only feasible on two maps (release and tundra, not including DLC since I don’t have those maps). On BG if you don’t have a barracks somewhere in there, you don’t have any hooks and will lose the game because of that. On pirth it would possibly be feasible depending on the opposing leader, if against covey it would be feasible if a UNSC mirror it would not. Chasms falls under the same thing as BG without a barracks in there somewhere they have a money hook and you don’t which in most cases will cost you the game.
Basically, what I’m trying to say is a lot of people seem to think that there is one secret strategy that will be good in every situation and that is just not the case. I thought the same thing when I first started playing this game, and while there is usually a couple of options that are “the best” they are still determined by the map you are playing on and what leaders the opposition is running. As far as build orders go in a lot of cases there is 1 maybe 2 build orders that are viable but again these are determined by the situation. If you’d like I’d be willing to teach you what I can, I primarily play 2s but still understand 1s better than 90% of the people on this game (which isn’t saying much at all, the amount of elephants, infantry, hornets and other laughable attempts to play this game never ceases to amaze me).
I agree with you on all fronts. There definitely is no set anything for this game. It’s just that, in my experience with this game, this strategy has a 75% chance of working. The 15% when it doesn’t work, that’s because I am playing someone higher level who already has more Hogs than I do. Or because, as you said, this strategy is exclusive to certain maps. That is something I should have mentioned. My purpose was to give some newer players who might be on this forum an introduction to a flawed strategy that forces them to understand the basic concepts of this game, and also forces them to modify it to their liking. Basically, I just want to see newer people in 1v1 try something else other than building a massive infantry army.
Things just got thought-provoking. I don’t normally get that wordy. I just have a strong feeling that only way to get better at this game is to learn how to modify another player’s tactics and make them fit into your own play style.
As for your mentor offer: Yes please! I know a thing or two about micro management and hook control (something this strategy doesn’t account for), and also I know by now that tanks are pretty good.
