Too Dark or Dark Enough?

I went back to replay ODST and I’ve just relised how dark the game overall is. I mean like the dark shadows at night are literally pitch black.

It’s really atmospheric but hinders gameplay by quite a bit. VISR is an absolute godsend at this point but doesn’t make you quite feel you’re at night time with it on. Thoughts?

if its night time and I have to use VISR, it makes the game feel more at night if anything. It all added to the wonderful atmosphere of ODST. reach could have been much better if they paid as much attention to the feeling of atmosphere as they did in ODST.

but for some stupid reason bungie said ODST was a step in the wrong direction. and reach wasn’t?

That atmosphere conveyed the feel of being alone.

@Impanther2002 Nothing was ever truer.

@RPGStylee Well, ODST and Reach were experiments from the general formula. Both had their highlights but over all IMO ODST was a better result.

We offered them an alternative, a choice.
“No,” they replied. “Too boring.”
But when they are trudging around, waist-high in their fetid pool of what they called “games,” they will look up to us and cry, “save us.”
We will look back down and whisper, “no.”

Dark enough.
why? because you were alone, in a hostile city and trying to find your squad. the whole detective sort of campaign is perfectly portrayed in ODST. No one has the right to know it.

If ODST 2 were to be developed, it’d be amazing just to go exploring new atmospheric environments, not just mindless action set pieces.

Who’s with me?

The atmosphere in ODST was perfect, if they make ODST 2 and the atmoshere stayed the same I would be very happy.

I found the atmoshere in ODST way better then Reach, I also replayed odst because I relized I dont know what I had untill it’s lost.

ODST, even though no matchmaking was increadible, and atmosphere change to the game would remove that ODST fell.

Reach felt like it was supposed to be “exiting” and “action-filled.” It kinda tripped up and just felt like a mess :l

Dark enough.

It was good enough lighting for me.

The atmosphere was perfect in O.D.S.T, when I first played it I didn’t know my way around the city so I was just strolling thru the whole map un-aware of the objective, then it started to rain and the longer and farther I walked it was activating different songs from the score which is amazing!!! It was just so HARMONIC and WIERD!!! This is getting me nostalgic!

I loved it, i thought the atmosphere was the best in Halo game and one of the best of all time, and there’s nothing more annoying than playing a game set at night yet you can still see everything as if it was day, completely ruins the level.

The Dark Enviorment gave the game Perfect ascetics for what they were trying to achieve…

The Darkness Shrouded the game in mystery, it made finding clues to you squads whereabouts, and Audio logs that much more challenging, in gave us a chance to play halo at night since Halo Ce, it amplified the feeling of being a wounded, rookie, ODST walking alone in a massive Damaged and destroyed darkened city, and having to be a detective under the radar searching for our possibly dead teammates…

The Dark lighting also made the lighting from bullets, gunfire, and street lights and buildings and even fire seem more glowy, colorful, and warm. It also made it a tad more realistic looking than halo 3 IMO.

I’m with you there. ODST had the best campaign of all the Halo games, and VISR Matchmaking would be amazing.

It’s dark enough. It was enough to get the ominous feeling across.

If its to dark maybe turn up the brightness.

Absolutely love how dark ODST is. If I’m ever wanting to play co-op Halo, it’s usually ODST I load up, because the atmosphere is just insanely badass. Then again, I love a lot of the settings in Reach… but ODST is just a lot more “dark” and mysterious and almost lonely in a way. Very very cool.

I really enjoyed ODST and if they had a chance to make another chapter in the ODST storyline, that would be awesome. I would love to see some more action out of Bucks squad, and get the chance to actually do a full drop with them into battle. Did they participate in the Battle of the Ark? It’s really a great squad of troops that I would love to go into campaign with.

The closest feel to ODST I got during Reach’s campaign was New Alexandria when you were flying around in the falcon alone in a forest of burning skyscrapers. No, the atmosphere in ODST was perfect and amazing as it was. I enjoyed it sincerely.

I think the lighting in the game is great at night. It’s a really nice change to the Halo games. And the VISR is great. However, it seems that when it is day or a fairly well lit room, that a lot of the time you have want to turn the VISR on because a lot of areas suddenly go really dark and it’s hard to see.

But it’s still sweet.

I loved the atmosphere of ODST. The lighting, combined with the epic soundtrack, made for an excellent campaign; probably the best out of the whole series, in my opinion.

The point of VISR is to see better in the dark, no?
