I am talking about a skill ranking, of course. The argument of “it’s just a stupid number next to your name, why do you care?” is so asinine and prevelant, I felt I needed to make a post explaining why it is important to so many people. The ranking gives you something to work for. It provides motivation to work with your teammates, it makes you sweat in a close game, and it gives you a sense of accomplishment. Personally, it kept me playing Halo 2 and 3. Yes, the mechanics of both games played an even larger role than the rankings as far as longevity, but the ranking provided a significant amount of replay desire. The argument should not even be one or the other. 343 needs to have a true skill ranking system, and it doesn’t have to come at the demise of the progression system. They can both be implemented so both sides can be appeased.
There are other things to work towards, and the rank is just a number. What the rank represents is still there in the game, but the rank itself is just a number.
I still haven’t seen any valid points to why including ranked playlists is a bad thing. All I see are people saying “Deal with it” and “It’s just a number.”
Because people against it are too lazy to make a new argument, and need to focus on the bad argument of visible rank being “just pixels” as if it shames casual gamers or something, and makes them feel bad about what they have done.
One thing I was wondering is what if they kept the progression system, but then had a separate playlist where you could see the number and it did not affect your rank.
It would get rid of those who want the rank out of vanity (since it would only appear in that playlist and no affect the rank). At the same time, it would still allow players like you to get that sense of accomplishment.
I think they are going to have something close to a true skill system(one that somehow prevents boosting) it would be dumb not to. My question is why not just do what halo 3 did and have a Ranked playlist and Social playlist but instead not needing a certain amount of true skill to level. It would make everyone happy.

May I shake your internet hand?

Dude…that’s just pathetic.
technically before it was not ture skill because it was based off win/loss. Progression is hardwork too ya’know, shouldn’t that give you motivation? don’t let a number turn you off and for quitters, they should lose exp but we are not sure if they do or not.
i think 343 just wants people to quit out of every game.

Read some posts that are against skill ranks. It sure seems like that is their intent.

No it’s not. I can go on Reach and afk all day in griffball. Is that hard work? No.
but, it IS just a number.
SykoSykes v2: SKILL LEVEL 50.
Happy now? Some people wonder why 343 uses NeoGaf or Twitter insted of these forums. Just spend an hour in here reading all the pointless complaint threads about a little number next to yout name (oh yeah, I just said that), and you’ll get your answer.
It’s just a number.
Enough said, stop with these pointless posts.

Progression is 0 work. I can AFK the game 24/7, and still reach max rank eventually.

Since it’s invisible and used to match you against people of similar skill, every playlist is a ranked playlist.

You’ll get reset.
There are counter measurements in place for that.
It is just a number, and those numbers are pixels, from a code, on the game. Nothing more
But rank IS just a number and a few pixels…
OT I’m not sure why people want a visible rank so badly, maybe insecurity and you just want the world to know of your amazing skill in a video game? I for one don’t need a number to tell me how good I am at a video game.

Stahl, it’s all that’s been posted on the Forums in the last 24 hours. At this point I’ve seen enough reasoning. Those people aren’t posting that stuff to spite anyone.
It’s just a number, I don’t really care one way or the other. It’s their way of saying “Meh, the game’s got better things to offer so the disappearance of something like this doesn’t really bother us.”
Like it or not, those people are the majority and chances are, nothing will change. I don’t doubt there will be some playlists in the future, but right now I’m pretty sure nothing is gonna change.
