To Halo 4 Music Haters

I realize that several people here and over at bungie forums have taken quite an opposing view to the music crafted by Neil Davidge for Halo 4. The majority of the complaints I see is that the music isn’t orchestral enough or carries that dub-step/non-Halo feeling to it, stating that all of Marty’s music is godly over Neil’s. I’m not going to try and argue about that last complaint because I myself have not yet heard of the entire Halo 4 OST, but does anyone remember this song from Halo Reach: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=bQPgSlmlJrc&NR=1

This music was anything but orchestral and was probably the most non-Halo piece I’ve heard from Marty, yet people still praised it. Now, if Neil composed something similar to this, I’m guessing that there would be quite an uproar from those who aren’t too fond of the direction the Halo 4 music is heading in.

I’m sorry about my rant. :frowning:

Hmm, good point. I remember listening to that track from reach. Something about it did feel jarring in the halo universe, but I do agree with what you said.

even though that track isnt orchestral and is out side martys usual style it was still good, you do have a good point, but the reason marty gets away with is because he done things like this in a small dose, but the reason neil isnt liked by a lot of people is because he has been very 2 dimensional so far all the stuff is very similar and repetitive, were as marty did have his orchestral music as is main but he produced a lot of things that was very different as well and for me that worked tracks now it isnt fair to judge neil just yet but if i were he is being too 2 dimensional, its all too electronic and generic, too much action scene style music, so far neil hasnt gave any feeling mystery, wonder and curiosity i cant really spark any imagination with his music so far, but as i said its too early to judge him entirely im only basing my judgement on what ive heard so far and im sure my opinion will change.

i have yet to see an epic piece like Warthog run, One final effort, or Tip of the spear

then, i will judge his musical skills

This seemed pretty ‘Halo’ to me.

As did this.

To my knowledge, we heard them, or at least something like them, before the soundtrack you posted in the OP.

I love Halo 4’s music so far but none, so far, has ‘wow’d’ me like every other Halo game, lets hope they’ve saved the best for last. :stuck_out_tongue:

Listen to this. I love the music that Neil has done so far.

Damn, double post. >:(

EDIT: Why is there so many double posts in here??

> even though that track isnt orchestral and is out side martys usual style it was still good unlike any of neils so far imo

You honestly don’t think that any of Neil’s Halo 4 work matches or surpasses the musical quality of a piece like “Engaged” from Reach?

edit: sorry, double-post…

I remember that track being used in the Reach demo on the beach assualt in in Long night of Solace, and everyone was scared that all of Reach’s music was going to sound like that. Just goes to show how different some of the pieces can be.

Double post. Nothing to see here…<< >>

Yet, that track is still more amusing than some/most of Neil’s scored. Imho, Neil’s pieces are just a little stale and boring. I still like some of his work though.

I don’t see why people blow up over the “new journey” odst of Neil. The most recent released ost sounds unoriginal and generic.

I guess you haven’t read the part in the bulletin (Or was it the video interview?) about Neil. Where they said they wanted a composer who can pull off music that sounds synthetic(or electronic) and organic at the same time. As for 2 dimensional and generic I have no idea what you mean. Anyway I like the music so far and the only game I can think of that has music similar to the one played in the campaign demo is Metroid Prime 2 which had an awesome soundtrack and great sense of mystery and exploration.*

i agree imo i think what Neil has made so far is very boring, and as i said in a previous post there no sense of mystery or curiosity and it dosnt spark any imagination for me, but thats just for now but he could blow us out of the water when we hear the rest of them.

Whoever says the soundtrack lacks mystery needs to listen to “Requiem”

Whoever said the soundtrack is boring needs to listen to THIS

Whoever complains about the soundtrack period before the game or the ACTUAL SOUNDTRACK is released, needs to stop being so ignorant and arrogent.

Engaged is more powerful than Neil’s work. I don’t hate the guy, but from what I’ve heard, I was hardly impressed, and I doubt he can recreate the power and emotion Marty was able to create.

What’s also annoying is that everyone over plays the same damn ost in every video about halo 4.

It gets super old and doesn’t help me to like it more.

Though I will say that I’ll like it more once I experience it in Halo 4 campaign. Hopefully the music will fall in sync with the gameplay and mood.

Double post

I like the new music.

IMO, it seems pretty mysterious and should fit those parts of the campaign pretty well.

Though, its hard to judge that because we haven’t heard it in-game at its specific moments. I’m guessing they’ll fit it in quite nicely.
