To everyone who criticizes Halo4's population

I constantly see many people attacking this game’s population. Now, I’m actually having fun when I play Doubles Pro and CTF and things are currently on the bright side for me. So, it annoys me a little that people keep complaining about H4’s low population. Do I think it’s a little on the low side? Of course I do, but when you use the population as a reason the game is bad, I’m inclined to disagree. What is the population, like 72k on a good day? Let me put this into perspective, if each person on Halo 4 gave you one dollar, you would have 72k in cash. If every person playing Halo 4 tried to fit in a small neighborhood, or even city, they couldn’t. Or, try to play games of 8-16 with 72 thousand people, you would not have a problem playing as many games as you desire. If that doesn’t say anything to you, what do you find to be the better game; Call of Duty, or Halo? CoD has a far higher population, than Halo yet I find it far worse. Since when does population translate into quality/success? Quality>Quantity my friends, so think about this thread before you attack the population once more.

Of course they could…

I said small city, like really small. They exist, but I was just trying to make people visualize the population in a physical way.

I agree this game is very good IMO. I believe a few things are making people go to other games. Things like: Maxing out at a mere 130, No Visible CSR, random drops, very few small maps, boltshot rage, lack of certain game types (Race, Territories, Assault, 1 Flag, etc…), and problems with the join in Progress system.

The good news though is that 343 is listening to us on the Forums and the numbers online. We have already seen some improvement and I for one am looking forward to the next 2 months.

Take say an average of 50,000 players peak per hour. Then say half of that only play for one hour per day. When you calculate that over a 24 hour period you’ll arrive at approx. 625,000 unique players per day.

It’s a rough statistic but you get the idea, it’s far from dead. Also this is only calculating war games. You need to add in numbers for SPOPS, campaign and customs too.

IMO there is still most likely 500,000 to 750,000 maybe even more playing everyday.

Also I’m really looking forward to the end of this month. TU, smaller maps, playlist change ups and all that for FEB alone. It should be good.

If you step outside of the Halo 4 forums you’ll notice many are involved with the campaign/SPOPS story and creating more screenshots/gametypes now that fileshare is online in game.

Maxing out at 130 isn’t the reason why I slowed down on my playing… I’ll give you 3 reasons

  1. Played it out, you can only play one game so much.

  2. I keep running into teleporters that seem to be able to deal damage to me but not take any damage.

  3. AC users that abuse the game, harvest kills, make the radar jammer disapear.

Edit: I would rather play Halo… and also paid 1$ from everyone playing COD

Good on you. Glad you’re enjoying it. I am too, for the most part.

God forbid I admit I enjoy it at all though - you can get flamed for that around here. Glad you posted.

I’ve got my gripes but letting them affect me to the point of annoyance reduces the fun.

I’m optimistic many of the issues being mentioned here will be addressed in the TU.

As for your topic - it is a bit disconcerting that the population numbers are lower than previous Halo games so quickly. Two nights ago I saw less than 700 people in the Infinity Slayer hopper.

I have never, ever seen a population that low in a team death match game in the previous Halo releases.

I’d be curious right now as to what the team slayer population in H3. Anybody know what it is at the moment?

At the end of the day, enjoy. If you can’t get a match anymore…start panicking.

The population shows how multiplayer games usually need a local only search filter to function.

population hardly means anything in terms of the quality of the game

there could have been 16 players to ever play h2 and 7 billion on h4 right now and h2 still blows it away

i just think it’s funny that they purposely abandoned critical halo tenets solely to tap into a hypothetical population and ended up just pushing long-time fans away

pretty solid idea imo

I just don’t understand why they made the ranking system so easy? Anyone can get to 130 very easily…Least have 1-50 rank with the SR rank…or even experience like halo 3…which I thought Halo 3 ranking was how it should be!

I haven’t complained about the population…ever.

I still wonder why people complain over the smallest things in this game even when 343 themselves acknowledged this and they even stated they would try much better and differently when halo 5 comes. If 343 is anything, its faithful, they could have cut and run but they are still here 3 months later and are going to keep this up until 5 comes out.

I took a break from halo 4 mainly in January to play well, far cry 3, the population in that game is even smaller, co-op is unplayable due to the worst lag ever, and there are only 4 competitive modes. Want to know the max amount of people in that game at a time? 1000, yeah that’s right, 1000. 70,000 or so is still a good amount, people are still playing halo 4 and anyone who does it just for the ranks well then they are playing for the wrong reasons. We will get CSR in April, we have a title update still to come, heck we have the second DLC this month.

In fact only thing I lost faith in over Halo 4 is the community, the community became so dense and stupid people complained about the stupidest things. I can understand a gripe with a weapon, armor ability, stage, mod, etc stuff that effects gameplay. I can be patient for those who don’t understand networking going “OMG MY RANK/EMBLEM/ IS NOT SHOWING” RUSH TO THE INTERNET AND COMPLAIN." Rather than just be patient and try again or try reconnecting. But the community became so bad, once I saw someone wanting to sue 343 for a mistake over the season pass, I just could not even faceplam or even make words for how insane or pathetic this one person could be, another wanted to petition 343 to go out of business, seriously the only thing I lost faith in is how this community lost its sense of logic and is just not simply able to take the good with the bad, I mean its not the best it could be but its sure hell better than COD or Battlefield, far cry has no one playing it, I sick of hats from TF2, and so on.

The pathetic thing is that so many people have this misguided sense of judgmental authority just because they paid $59.99 for a game. “I paid for this so I have the right to bash whoever made it because it did not turn out exactly as I wanted it to”.

How many other games are out there these days that cost the same as Halo but are no where near its quality (or the lack there of as some of you may argue).

The game is flawed, yes. Just as any other title out there. We need to understand that Bungie set the bar very high for 343i. It is a daunting task to fill those shoes and I believe they have done well in their first attempt. They are actively listening to community feedback and implementing changes on a consistent basis.

Halo 4 is the beginning of the new trilogy. There is time for growth and improvement.

Like it or not, we are creatures of habit by nature and are not very fond of change. I have played Halo from the very beginning and enjoyed each game whole heartedly because they evolved and progressed with time. The gaming industry is changing and the market is moving towards new directions. Like many of you, I have stood by this franchise since the beginning. It is important to realize, however, that the absence/resignation of the older Halo generation will not have as great an impact on the franchise as some of us may wish to believe. The void will be filled with players who are new to the Halo universe.

Bottom line: the Halo franchise/universe does not revolve around a certain sector of its population. If we truly wish for Halo to continue to grow and progress forward, it is time to stop dwelling on the past.

> I just don’t understand why they made the ranking system so easy? Anyone can get to 130 very easily…Least have 1-50 rank with the SR rank…or even experience like halo 3…which I thought Halo 3 ranking was how it should be!

Ever get the fact that this ranking system had gameplay impacting stuff in it?

Ranking systems that include gameplay effecting unlocks cannot be designed around the lvl 1-50 ranking halo 2 and 3 had.

Imagine playing COD4 back in 2007 and if they did the same ranking system but with gameplay unlocking content. It would not work, worse it would create such a divide it would force and encourage others to cheat and boost just to get the higher lvl stuff. Not to mention imagine you got an M4 and then you lost to go down a rank, guess what you would lose the M4 if IW made it in the same sense.

So many other games use this type of ranking system today, any COD, battlefield, resistance 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Assassin’s creed, etc. There are so many games with gameplay effecting content you unlock, you cannot make a system which would divide the equipment others could or could not get, Halo is a sandbox game, if you block part of that sandbox that’s just wrong.

And again yeah Reach was the big factor of anyone getting the high rank, all you had to do was play. Also look at halo 3, if people were concerned with unlocking stuff back then when they complain about 4 they would have stopped playing halo 3 back in January of 08. You could literally unlock everything in 1 week for that game. Not like the months it took reach that served no real purpose. If you play the game only for unlocks, you are doing it for all the wrong reasons.

Halo 4 is having the CSR for a reason, its going to be the matchmaking system we want and that should be enough for all the whiners, they get it but its not enough so what should 343 do? I mean they are giving the big babies their milk, what should they do now? Its still not enough? Spoiled brats is more like it.

Halo 3’s ranking system was acceptable back then because it had nothing gameplay impacting to unlock but now it does, that does not mean they could not make 2 ranking systems as 343 is doing Your overall rank which is just time played and the second which is just for show, if any game does it as these are divided then that works. If other shooters do this, a progress rank for unlocks that impacts the game and a skill rank for show which does not effect the game, that works, that is a good thing. And the worst halo game 4 as many whiners say is doing just that but hey its like 343 is giving them gold and they complain and want platinum instead.
