Everyone is talking about how smartscope is exactly like what we’ve been used to for the the past 13 years and that it’s not ADS because of your base player traits, but I have noticed that just about everyone is completely missing a whole new factor that is definitely different than all previous games.
In the days before the official gameplay got shown, we had a small amount of leaked gameplay showing (a form of) ADS on the BR. After the initial shock of seeing (a form of) ADS wore off, I was quite contempt with the change and thought “Oh it’s just an added animation for zoom weapons, it won’t be too bad”… But then the official trailer came out and I heard this sentence “Every weapon now has a zoom”.
Am I the only one who is bugged by this? A BR or DMR I’m fine with, but a SMG or shotgun? Even a sword? Now with this the specific ranges weapons are meant for are going to be blurred with a whole lot of newer players trying to snipe people across the map with an AR. It doesn’t matter how much you try defend smartscope and say it’s exactly what we’re use to, this is a completely different aspect that we have never seen before. And if descope makes it completely useless, why add it in the first place? If all you’re going to say is “Well it doesn’t matter because the weapons effective range it too short”, then ask yourself. Why? If my SMG is useless while I’m trying to shoot people from afar, why do we even need it? I think I’m gonna cringe pretty hard for the first time when I see someone get a kill with a shotgun while using smartscope. That just seems so wrong to me and fundamentally unlike Halo.
The only way I see this working out is all close range weapons are now going to be effective at mid range making them overpowered, or smartscope is going to be useless on all close range weapons begging the question “Why does this gun even need a smartscope?”
I’m going to wait till the beta to see how it all plays out, but so far this new feature worries me quite a bit.
Based on the gameplay I’ve seen, smart scope works as a small buff for weapons which don’t need zoom.
-For Example, the SMG is a lot more accurate, therefore more shots hit the enemy, But its range stays the same making it hard to zoom in the first place.
-With the sword in increases lunge but you still get “de-scoped” if you are shot.
It seems pretty balanced to me.
Nah, that doesn’t bug me. I don’t see it being much of a difference maker because the range stays the same.
Besides, even if it did slightly buff the close quarters weapons like AR or SMG, I’m fine with that. They were consistently overpowered by the BR at close range, anyway.
I say this Smart Scope is a Good Thing.
Why would that bug me? There’s no reason that the BR should be the only viable weapon.
Of course it makes a difference, for the better.
First, better animations. Second, finally a new control scheme where scoping is on the trigger and not the damn right stick.
I love the look of smart scope, can’t wait to use it, and so happy that everyone above me hasn’t been a negative nancy about it

Having animations does not make it better, neither is changing the button scheme for scoping. Rather or not it makes a difference hardly matters, because it is not for the better. SS is just a way to appeal to people who plays modern FPS games.

Im sorry but don’t we all play modern FPS’s? its just a new control scheme so that people like me who prefer to aim with a trigger don’t feel like they are playing Deus Ex, but a competitive shooter.
And i believe animations matter, it makes the visual feedback of aiming a gun smoother.

K, but it doesn’t change the gameplay so who gives a crap? Not to mention that you can change the control scheme.
THANK YOU for this thread.
I was/am not a fan of SS.

It does change the gameplay by increasing the range of automatic weapons (AR being the most noticeable weapon). And I know it can be changed.
AR range is the same, you’re just able to do a bit of zoom in.

I hope you are right.

The point of having different weapons is for them to fill different roles.
Honestly, why does the SMG need a zoom that increases accuracy? Isn’t the Assault Rifle supposed to be the extended range automatic?
How would a Shotgun benefit from a zoom?
I like the Energy Sword concept. It’s basically a secondary firing mode. I believe that is the kind of “zoom” that non-precision weapons should get.
The SMG had zoom in ODST but it still wasn’t too godly. I’m onboard with ss.
All SS does is make it easier to see your targets, it doesnt make you any more accurate, oh wait thats what zoom does.
The legenday weapons are the only confirmed ones that have any change in how they work. And possibly the Promethean weapons will display diffrent behavior so as long as they retain the dual function some of them had.
I’m just hoping it can give some kind of boost to the AR’s accuracy. It’d be nice for it to actually start acting like a RIFLE rather than an elongated longer ranged SMG.
All they had to do was tighten the spread on the AR. IMO the zoom is unnecessary. Same for the SMG, which, as a close range weapon, shouldn’t even be able to reach a 2x scope range.
My only complaint is it should only be for precision weapons and not on things like the Assault Rifle. I actually tweeted to Josh Holmes suggesting they remove SS from the Assault Rifle because “I don’t want to be sniped by fully autos” and he replied with “I promise you won’t get sniped with autos” so maybe it has the same bloom or something. Smart Scope should be something interesting to see on Covenant Weaponry because they’re not hitscan weapons.
