I can’t wait for halo infinite. It looks like the perfect step up. The hype is real!
I still want to see the gameplay and story first. The art style is a nice touch, but that’s window dressing. All the classic art in the world isn’t going to make a difference if Halo: Infinite plays the same as Halo 5 or continues it’s poor quality story.

I’m sure 343 knows at this point that if they screw this up, they’re screwed. If they mess up yet another Halo, they will have effectively killed the franchise. I’m sure that’s the last thing they want. That’s the last thing anyone wants. In my opinion, H4’s story was good. Not as good as the previous, but still good. The multiplayer was awful, however, so they tried to fix that in Halo 5 and in trying to fix that, they slacked on the campaign. With Halo 5, I feel the multiplayer is fun, but the campaign isn’t as good as it could have been. It’s not awful or anything, but it’s just not good. I understand most of it. I understand Chief and Blue Team’s motives, but no one else’s. That’s the issue with Halo 5. I think now that Chief is the central focus, rather than the cardboard cutout—I mean Locke—we might actually have a good game on our hands. Only thing I think they need to tweak about the multiplayer is the REQ packs. No more REQ packs. I think having the multiplayer down will definitely give them more time to focus on the campaign. I understand they don’t all work on the same thing at the same time, but it definitely felt like the multiplayer was the main focus of H5, rather than the story.

Okay, but do you see how parts of your criticism don’t really help 343 at all? The cardboard cutout comment about Locke specifically. That’s the kind of buzzword criticism that doesn’t actually say anything. What exactly made Locke not resonate with you as a character? Now, I’ve heard some valid criticism against him, but I’ve also heard stuff that is blatantly untrue, notably that he’s arrogant or rude.

He isn’t anything. That’s the issue. He has no character. I can’t remember any point in the game where Locke said or did anything to further his character. Maybe once, and it was never really explained or brought up again. That one line, “You’re not the only one who’s here because of him.” Nightfall set Locke up so perfectly as this Captain America type character who always did what was right. In Guardians, he’s just this guy. There’s nothing to him. I mean, if you know of any expanded universe novels or comics featuring Locke that expand upon him as a character, let me know. Maybe it’s just my awful memory. But I felt like Locke could have been better. Like, I like Mike Colter. He’s great. He’s a great face for Locke, and tbh, the voice fits, even if I know that’s not Colter doing the voice. Locke was just so promising, but in the end, he didn’t seem to have any character. The game never even fully establishes that Locke is going after Chief. They just suddenly are. Maybe I missed something, idk.

I can think of a few things:
Nightfall does indeed set him up as a character who, though an ONI agent, tries to give people a chance. He does so with the Zealot who unleashes the element on Sedra. He does with Axel the Yonhet in the same series. He refuses to execute the Alerian miners on the Alpha Shard even though that’d ease his team’s mission. Every time he faces hardship he refuses to bend to the easier, but morally compromising, path. Same thing happens in Halo 5, with the exception of Jul 'Mdama, though I’d argue you really can’t take chances with the Covenant Supreme Leader.
However, we see him calm and almost apologetic when faced with Governor Sloan on Meridian despite Sloan being a complete jerk to Osiris the second they arrive. He knows they are on the turf of people not exactly loyal to the UNSC, so he shows proper respect and deference to the people of Meridian. He could be dismissive and frankly unprofessional like Buck was, but Locke knew better. Same with the Arbiter. Even though Locke suggested to kill the Arbiter way back, he keeps whatever animosity he has in check because he knows he needs Thel’s support. Even when he encounters and fights Chief, he gives him a chance to surrender. Could’ve easily shot Chief, but he didn’t. And once he understands the context, Locke immediately and without animosity goes on to try and help Chief. Hell, when Cortana tries to assault his character he moves on as if she said nothing.
So I see a guy whose calm under pressure, very perceptive of his surroundings, quick to adapt when necessary (suggesting flexible thinking), and able to forge partnerships quickly and effectively. At the very least he’s the kind of stoic character that’s common in Halo. I don’t deny their were opportunities missed, but to suggest there is NOTHING to Locke’s character misses a lot.
So I see that the soft-reboot rumor was true, I legitimately don’t understand John loading his helmet with the “Ascended God” Cortana part though…
