To be good in a Halo game. What SKILL do you need?

http://www.bungie.net/stats/playerstatshalo3.aspx?player=davilundd
I am a highly skilled player in Halo and would really like to know …

Out of curiosity. Both hardcore and casual players. What do you believe is needed to be good at Halo 1-3? What type of skill?

And …

How can we together create the most skilled playlist in Halo ever?
I’m not really hiding anything behind a mirror here.

It’s a combination of skills.

-reaction time
-hand-eye coordination
-map domination
-variety of weapon familiarities and skills
-good prediction of player flow
-precise aim
-smooth movement, both vertically and horizontally.
-understanding of power weapon spawns
-proper vehicle usage
-situational awareness (when to engage and how to engage opponents)

Probably more than this, but this is all I can think of at the moment.

Honestly? Muscle memory. If you play for long enough, your digits (particularly your thumbs) become increasingly capable of moving through finer gradations of movement, allowing you to aim more accurately. The rest is mostly luck.

Knowing how to shoot someone.

Assuming you’re in a team-based gametype, excellent communication is a must!

Skill in Halo too me comes in many forms. The number one thing is awareness, meaning the ability to know what is going on at all times. knowing who has what power weapons, where teammates are and where apponents are. After that its shooting skill, map awareness, predicting apponents decisions, and ability to put grenades on target.

You need:

-Precision aim
-Knowing maps like the back of your hand
-Knowing spawns
-Able to cope under pressure
-Able to come up with tactics
-Knowing when to rush
-Being a good teammate
-Power weapon spawns/times
-Power up spawns/times
-Knowing all call outs
-Knowing all vantage point on all maps

Probably allot more which I forgot.

Don’t quit out of a game if you’re getting killed constantly. If it isn’t something like grifball or a gametype where you can always see your opponent just stick with it even if you have a super low k/d. I force myself to stay in game even if I’m getting betrayed by idiots or have a poor team. Back when I played RTS games the only way to learn is to stick with it even if you get your -Yoink- handed to you. It took me dozens of tries in some of those before I learned how to win. Stay in games and do what you can I think makes you more skilled. Aside from that not using the ‘bread and butter’ strategies and weapons and just doing your own thing to learn how to beat the opposition. This isn’t halo 1 anymore, vehicles don’t stay intact when hit by a bird or an atomic bomb. Adapt to the new climate.

If we assume based on this post which hit quite on the nail. What should be in a skilled playlist?

This is how I would place what you need to be good at Halo from top to bottom.

  1. good prediction of player flow
  2. situational awareness (when to engage and how to engage opponents)
  3. variety of weapon familiarities and skills
  4. hand-eye coordination
  5. smooth movement, both vertically and horizontally.
  6. precise aim
  7. reaction time
  8. understanding of power weapon spawns
  9. proper vehicle usage

You’re right. Always stay in the game. Just because you are one or two down in numbers doesn’t mean you are going to lose. Of course IF you think you are going to lose you will lose.

Here’s a good example I played today. Our teammate quit in the start, which made it 3-4. Yet we owned and made later a person on their team to quit.

I never quit a game. Of course unless i have to do something.

Predicting spawns and spawn trapping are probably the most powerful tools you could learn. Also, incredibly hard since no one knows the exact algorithm they use for the spawn logic.

Positioning is more important than anything. If you put yourself in the right places, it can make up for any lacking ability in the aim department.

How is map control, power weapon timing, and communication luck?

Halo: Combat Evolved
-Shotgun
-Sniper Rifle
-Plasma Grenade

Halo 2

  • A funny thing called skill

Halo 3
-Gravity Hammer
-Pistol

The only skill you need is how to aim and shoot the precision weapons.

Then you remove the rest of the sandbox that interferes or might trump that.

The better your aim is, the better you will generally do. Being knowledgeable of tactics, map layouts and weapon locations and spawn times will also enhance your skill, as well as being able to efficiently use other things in the game, such as AAs or the new “perks but not actually perks but sound exactly like perks” system.

Being able to communicate to your team quickly and efficiently also helps in team games. The more things you’re able to do, the more skilled you are. You could have a fairly bad aim but be able to outmanoeuvre players with better aim just by knowing tactics and spawn locations of power weapons, whereas a player who can do both will dominate everyone.

I don’t get the subtext but anyway

as with pretty much any FPS
-situational awareness first and foremost

  • in depth understanding of the game mechanics, you would think this would be common sense but even a game as simple as this one is not very well understood by it’s community

  • communication and coordination in team based games

  • map and player/weapon spawn familiarization

  • pointing and clicking even in halo 3 most players could not get a 4bk on half decent players.

If those are shots at MLG, then smh, so so much.

As I said before: Positioning, it’s the best skill/knowledge to have in a Halo game.

I did say “mostly” luck. And I would argue that luck contributes significantly to both map control and power weapon timing. A player in the right place at the right time will seize the better position and the better weapon.

One of the biggest things is awareness.
