Title Update Discussion

> For me Halo 2’s multiplayer was easily the most enjoyable. I agree the Pistol was OP but the 4 shot BR(minus the glitches) from Halo 2 was the most fun and made the game fast paced.

I dont feel Halo 2 was more fun… especially when you factor in back then Halo 2 had little competition and thus it was REALLY one of the ONLY games to play on XB Live that was worth a crap… … no one else had a service that touched XB Live ( even though its still better then PSN ) and back then none of the games were really that good ( talking about multiplayer online gaming ) …

I had a program you could downloaded to Windows XP that manipulate you to be host in Halo 2… it was a program anyone could download and get host advantages, plenty knew these programs but the majority didnt know… Things like ‘Super jumps’ were fun in Halo 2… but to most people who didnt know how to do this - you were cheating… Halo 2 was the easiest Halo to cheat in… and thats why I say towards the ends of Halo it was a game simply littered with cheating and really no longer fun…

I also have felt that some of the complaining about the ranking system in Reach is legitimate, but some people got RICH from boosting in Halo 3… there are ( or were ) many PRO Boosting websites during the Halo 3 heydeys… and some of those websites had many people on their staff… So some of that complaining is simply people who are upset they can’t make money from boosting - whether it be cash or kids who boosted for XB Live points or boosted for XB Live memberships …

> > The more I read over the responses of the disappointed the more I am confused. What is so bad about this? Some people love the game the way it is. This is fair and just and I’m even more excited about it now as they are clearly hinting at some things we’ve suggested.
> >
> > You people are ridiculous and ungrateful.
> >
> > You request things and when they hint at it possibly coming to fruition you go crazy because it isn’t how you thought. So what if they only do this for certain playlists? How is that wrong? That means that the people who love the way the game is won’t be shoved to the side and abandoned.
> >
> > You need to learn appreciation and patience. Hell, you are judging before you even know. It’s like asking a -Yoink!- whether she think -Yoink!- feels good.
>
> It has more to do with the notion that the people who enjoy the game “as it is” right now would likely enjoy it with the changes that many are requesting.
>
> Let me make something clear: I used to be right there with you, pitchfork in hand telling people who didn’t like bloom or Armor Lock that they were insane and that the should “adapt.” I defended the game left and right, praising Bungie’s work. I’m not saying the game is bad, I freaking love this game and it’s a lot of fun. But it would be exponentially better with the right care applied to it.
>
> It seems pretty clear at this point that if 343i did things like fix/remove bloom, remove Armor Lock and a few other AAs, etc that more people would COME BACK than would leave. Honestly most of the people who like the game “as is” may not even really notice that much.

This argument has a lot of weight to it. Would those who enjoy Reach as-is REALLY be so put-off with the removal of Armor Lock and Bloom?

The other side to this coin is…What do we care? If 343 wants to keep that “core” Reach experience alive…Why should those of us who hate it give a crap? It’s a little disappointing, but as long as they provide me with enough content in the Classic update…I could care less what happens to the “Core” Reach gameplay.

> > > CE did not have the fastest running speed of the series, it just feels that way because the acceleration speed is very quick in CE. By this, I mean that in Reach (and Halo 3), it takes a very long time to go from idle movement to full speed, whereas in Halo 1 and 2, you accelerate to full speed almost instantly when you move your joystick. The same thing happens when you decelerate.
> > >
> > > This is something that should be taken into consideration when developing Halo games. When you have fast character acceleration and deceleration, it adds much more depth to gameplay by adding a skill to master; strafing. In Halo 3 and Reach, strafing is pretty much useless since it takes about a year to accelerate and decelerate. In Halo 1 and 2, out-strafing opponents was a huge part of gameplay. This is just one of the many ways Halo has been progressivley dumbed down.
> > >
> > > Other than that, you forgot to mention aim acceleration (not aim assist, they’re two different things). Joystick responsivness is crucial to movement fluidity. Reach and Halo 3 has very bad movement fluidity because our joysticks don’t respond very well. This is something that should be looked at for the Reach title update and Halo 4.
> >
> > Yes strafe acceleration and aim acceleration are important. And strafing in DMR fights at anything beyond close range is almost useless in Reach.
>
> I miss the quick strafing of Halo CE. If you could strafe well + have an excellent aim with the Pistol you were tough to beat. Man, I miss that skilled game.
>
> Now we’re stuck with a game that has incredible bullet magnetism for the nublets. For some reason the hyperlink won’t show up, watch this clip: http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=18816796&player=SkyFighta65

Yes the DMR has a very small skill gap because of bloom, large hitboxes, and slow strafe acceleration

Halo 1 matchmaking… my life would be complete.

I think you’re going to get part of your wish, OP. It seems like they’re leaving the default Reach stuff alone, and focusing the update entirely on the new playlist(s) for Halo CEA.

It won’t be exactly like you want, but I’m willing to bet good money that the Classic Update will provide much more of a “Halo” experience than we’re currently getting with Reach.

Here’s my Title update ‘Wishlist’

  • Bloom custom games options
  • Needle rifle buffed
  • Bloom tweaked so it works
  • AL nerfed a bit
  • Banshee bomb nerfed
  • DMR/pistol damage to vehicles lowered
  • Warthog strength buffed
  • loads of more custom game options
  • AL sticky shedding removed
  • Any player idle for more than 3 to 4 minutes auto-kick
    what’s yours?

Ranked Playlist Halo 2 Style

Theater Mode is a massive downgrade from Halo 3, and its a shame. It was a fantastic resource for Machinima directors, casual and competitive players alike. Now it is a shadow of its former self, and needs a SERIOUS fix!!!

1) Fix the camera to make it like H3’s. The camera is horrible in Reach. It never responds to input like in H3, the angles are awful, the camera is far slower than H3’s even with the fast options toggled and the lag is atrocious.

2) Bring back Party Viewing!!! Do I even need to explain this? It was in Halo 3, its not in Reach. That sucks. If they took it out because of lag issues, why not use this moment to fix them! Beat Bungie at their own game that they designed!!!

3) Better controls. That means real rewinding and fast forwarding, not massive skips over and over.

4) Bungie Pro and Youtube exporting from Halo Reach. If you pay 10$ for the account, you should be able to get your videos to people fast and easy, without having to download the video off the website or install a separate player.

5) Spectator Mode. If this isn’t added to Reach, it is a MUST for Halo 4. The ability to watch real time games being played, from casual Infection matches, to level 50 TS skirmishes. Also the ability to tag realtime matches for quick acess both ingame, and on Halo Waypoint!

2. This was removed because it was insanely unreliable. People would often drop from the lobby, and sometimes, all players involved would be perma-blackscreened and would need to Dashboard to “escape”.

3. These may not be possible without engine rewrites. Theater data isn’t a video, it’s literally a list of actions that happened in the game. Rewinding without a skip would require the game to literally undo the things that have happened previously, and depending on how the data is stored, it may not be possible to undo things like biped deaths and object despawning.

4. Videos might not use Bungie Pro anymore, now that Reach is being managed by 343. Though I agree that the Silverlight player is a laggy, skippy pile of trash.

5. Wouldn’t this reduce the number of players that can actually fight? Sixteen-player netcode, five guys in spectator – that’s an 11-player cap, pretty much.

The only problem I have with theater is the camera when you view zoomed out third person (when attached to the spartan). H3 had the focus point at the center of the spartan, so you could see the whole figure. But Reach focuses on the head, so you only see the figure from the chest up, and the figure only takes the bottom 25% of the screen. Not good for machinima when tracking the spartan…

Good points. I think you should add this to the OP though:

6) Add an option to save map data from film. The map data is still present in a film. This is how you can move around during the film. This means if something bad happens to a map you’re creating and you don’t have a backup, you could go to an older film of it and resurrect your map, saving changes at any time frame in the film. You could also have multiple backups without cluttering your map selection. I see no reason why this can’t be implemented, other than time constraints.

That’s what I’m hoping for. Otherwise I probably won’t buy the game.

This worked in Halo 3. Watching a film put the map and game variants into the respective Recent Files sections.

Because of this useful behavior, uploading Film Clips became a very popular means of transferring… illegitimate… Halo 3 content without directly breaking the rules and risking a ban. If Bungie deliberately removed the functionality, then they probably removed it for that reason – and if that’s true, then it won’t be re-added.

Another case of rulebreakers potentially ruining a great feature for the rest of us.

At least bring back party viewing…That’s what I used theater for the vast majority of the time in Halo 3.

Since the game will be sharing Reach’s multiplayer I would like to see a few small tweeks here and there across game typs and maps. (Please note that I don’t come on here all the time or rarly ever so keep in mind that I don’t know if another post like this has been made already.)

Objective game types
Some gametyps I’m fine with but few in premium battle just seem to make it less fun, as most Flag games end up on highlands as well as assult games end up on condemed/uplink.

Changes that could be made;
For all Objective types Jet pack and Active Camo should be removed and replaced with Hologram and Bubble Shield.

Bubble Shield for it’s handy heath kit on the go when your stuck in the middle of the map where you will never find a heath pack unless you back track or go to the enemy base.

Hologram would be good also since it’s not as powerful and is a simple distraction half the time if used right.

Most of the reason jet pack should be removed stems from the rock’s and rappeling buildings that player can get to with the jet pack, I don’t think those area’s where ment to be reachable.

Weapon Spawns/Placement for all defiant maps are in good order however all Noble Maps need a re-placement of all power weapons and basic weapons a like, I mean whos going to find the Plasma Repeter against a rock wall on Breakpoint near where blue team spawn’s? Nobody. I found it by accident and even then it didn’t seem worth using on that map.

Upgrades to Breakpoint
-Remove Wraith Tank. (From Objective Games Except Invasion)(It spawns at the base of the Middle Rock Formation)
-Change Sniper Spawns So each is near the team’s spawn area. (All Game types except Invasion)
-Move laser to where wraith tank spawns. (All Game types except Invasion)
-Move Rockets to where Tunnle Sniper spawns. (All Game types except Invasion)
-Remove or Move Focus Rifles or just have one at the top of the middle rock formation. (All Game types except Invasion)
-Remove plasma launcher from Blue and Red spawns or move it to the caves in the middle. (All Game types)
-Plasma Repeater’s moved to more visiable areas. (All Game types)

As far as objective goes for Anchor 9 and Tempest They seem to run smoothly no matter the game type, so I can’t really say anything should be changed for them, I really only see Breakpoint as a map that should be changed a bit, make run smoothly like the other maps do.

Thousands of Halo fans are waiting to fall back in love with the series they once knew. 343, deliver a true Halo experience with CE Anniversary and you win the respect of us.

*Note: I fully understand CEA multiplayer is within Reach multiplayer. That doesn’t mean it can’t be different.

Let the Reach kids have Reach the way they want. They can even play the CEA maps in default Reach multiplayer. But have a refuge for us who treasure classic, pure Halo gameplay by giving CEA its own side of Reach Matchmaking.

The following made CE unique and treasured, and need to be integrated into CEA multiplayer with the title update:

Quick weapon kill times of around 1 second, with a dominant pistol
Fast movement speed and high jump height
Nadable power weapons and power ups that can be shot down

The following also must be included for CEA multiplayer to succeed:
No bloom
No AAs
Bleedthrough
Less melee lunge
Less bullet magnetism

Without these elements, CEA will be just another map pack. You mentioned “classic gameplay elements” in the TU. Deliver on that.

TL;DR: While CEA is campaign-only, 343 should have CEA’s side of Reach MM reflect the original gameplay.

“There are some bigger ticket “classic” Halo gameplay elements which people are clamoring for and which we intend to do our best to deliver on.”

“But I can say that, having tried a few of the more significant tweaks, certain “classic” elements are already working with beautiful and deadly efficiency.”
