Okay, so I’m a decent player at Halo 5, I log most of my hours in Halo 2&3. But, Halo is just so different in the motion tracker meters and it always fails me. I want to learn how to be aware of where someone is around me without having to worry about getting back stabbed.
Map awareness in halo 5 is more difficult, but the most helpful is the sound of other players and not necessarily the motion tracker.
In a normal 4v4 I look where teammates go and then if I hear someone where there shouldn’t be a teammate I quickly turn around. Personally I don’t use a headset but rarely get surprised by backstabbers. There’s a very loud windy sound if someone is running towards you.
Most important is knowledge of the maps themselves, and watching where fights are happening to predict where the others enemies are located. The enemy respawns is important to learn to prevent surprises.
Spawns rotate to the safest place. So if you attack a red base and elimininate the enemies they will spawn on blue side. Or the corner/edge furthest away from your team. With that knowledge you know where you most likely get attacked from.
I always tend to check for people going alternative ways to surround me or the team. Take time to look around in open areas instead of running to a fight.
No enemies seen is good intel for knowing where they are or how many killed your teammate. Also a means a free highway to flank. If you come behind enemies you can scout who to attack first before you shoot a guy and realise afterwards you are 1v3 or another enemy has a power weapon. So the short motion sensor can be very beneficial as the hidden attacker.
One last important thing about getting backstabbed is how the enemy spawns work. It’s based upon where you aim. So if you aim across the map, the game thinks your area is a safe spawn for the enemies and can spawn them right next to you. Easy way to notice if this happens is if your team starts spawning across the map.
I have headphones that usually pick up a players footprints (unless they have camo) so they can’t sneak up behind me. One thing you need to do is look at your teammates. See where they are, where they die, and how they die. If you see a teammate die from a melee obviously the enemy is nearby opposed to dying from a sniper. Assume every part of the map your teammates aren’t at that’s where the enemy is and it’s usually true. There’s nothing you can really do about flanks though.
