Tips needed for railgun

I seem to be way below average when it comes to the railgun - whenever anyone points one at me I seem to be a dead man no matter how hard I try to dodge out of the way. But when I’m the one holding the rail gun it seems to be hard to land a hit - its always such a relief when I do get a kill with it. Can anyone tell me the secret to wielding a railgun successfully?

I think I have the same problem it’s with all guns where you have to charge then fire, which is why I hate the spartan laser. There’s no secret, you have to anticipate where they’re going to be 2 seconds after triggering it to be successful.

ok im pretty good with the railgun. Idk how good, you can check my service record if you want but heres what i would suggest.

  1. it doesnt have to be fully charged to fire. A lot of people seem to not know this but once its around 70-80% charged you can release the trigger and it will fire before being fully charged.
  2. If you’re pretty sure someone is around the corner charge it up as you are rounding the corner. If no one is there save the round by switching to your next weapon then back again to your rail gun.
  3. When fully charged it does do more damage i believe and has a VERY small splash damage. Having said that it will kill someone one shot not fully charging aswell.
  4. Always reload as soon as possible if there are enemys near by you might want to just pocket the Rail Gun and fight with your other weapon till you have time to reload.
  5. Generally you want to maintain the high ground. U can charge it up. then jump to get and angle on someone on the low ground and do some death from above.

The secret to the Railgun is to always be priming the gun. Keep tapping the trigger but don’t let the gun fire. Make habit of this. Then when you see someone you just keep hold of the trigger and the Railgun is already partially charged. Watching a Walshy video taught me that.

Most my rail gun kills come from me being on the high ground and shooting down or being in a straight away where people have no choice but to come straight at me sorta speak or retreat.

This isnt always the answer i almost never do this unless i am sure of an enemys location. This will give away your position if enemies are near by that are unaware as your enemies can hear the constant clicking and buzzing of you clicking the trigger over and over. Its time to death is much faster than most weapons in the game so the trick is to see them first and start charging it before the get there firstt shots off. Also like i said. Try to maintain the high ground and force people to engage you in straight aways instead of out in a yard or garage.

The trick with the railgin is that you shouldn’t wait for it to reach full charge and go off on it’s own. Unlike the Spartan Laser (which will not fire unless you hold the trigger for the entire charge cycle) the railgun will reach full charge, then automatically go off a moment later. If you let that happen, the shot will surprise you and you won’t be able to time your shots reliably.

When you start charging the shot, watch the bottom of the crosshair. A small meter will start to fill. Once it reaches full charge, your shot is ready and will hold for about a second until auto firing. Before it does that, line up your shot, then release the trigger.

Hope that helps!

Use rail vs light vehicles over infantry. Rail shots can get easy double kills on hogs.

While I hear what you are saying about the noise. If they are close enough to hear that they are probably on radar anyways. And if they are on your radar then you are on theirs. I don’t think I have ever been able to make an accurate call-out from just hearing the rail charge.

Good advice, its just like spinning up miniguns in other shooters. Just be careful not to bring this habit over to plasma pistols.

Yeah I would say there have been a single digit number of times that a player aimed the railgun at me and missed.

I have the same opinion on that as Force Recon does. Priming and pre-charging the gun before you find your targets is not necessary because of the relatively short charge time. You do see pros doing this a lot but not very often does it really make a difference. It seems to be more of a habit/nervous twitch that pros seem to always need to be doing something with their fingers to keep from getting tense.

I had no idea you could control the timing, I have always held the trigger until it goes off which is probably why I miss so much! Thanks all.

Also keep in mind there are 3 different types of rail guns and they all work different. I pulled out an Arc light for the first time over the weekend trying to shoot down a Banshee. It shoots much different than the other 2 rail guns. I learned that the hard way this weekend. Very frustrating moment to say the least.

I have also found that it is an excellent sniper/camper killer from a distance too. Don’t be scared to use it from afar!

This.

The other tips are extremely helpful (I.e. early release and always trapping the charge, UNLESS it’s a whiplash), but while you try to implement them you should treat the rail gun as something exclusively used as anti vehicle.

Focusing on the larger more predictable targets will give you better practice for timing and patience. Then once you have that down, infantry will be a breeze.

The railgun is hands down my fav gun in the game. The way i have done it is to keep an eye on your cross hair whilst charging it but listen to the sound of the railgun at the same time. After a while you should get used to the sound the railgun makes when its ready to fire. Also i find the railgun is best at medium range. If i am too close i am backing away whilst charging it. Seems to help me.

I would like to add that anticipation of your enemy’s position is also key. Lead your target, & try time the railgun’s discharge to match where your opponent will be. In close quarters, this thing is BEAST. However it’s all about timing.

It’s been changed in the hammerstorm update and is now hitscan. (no need to lead your shots)

They didn’t really need to buff the railgun, lol. After the Magnum & AR (respectively), it my most used & one of my highest accuracy weapons.
