Tips for FFA?

I am trying to get into Onyx tier from Diamond, because I’ve been going back and forth between D4/5, and I am getting frustrated because I don’t know any general strategies for FFA. Typically, this seems to result in fire from multiple angles.

I prefer to run-and-gun. Is that wrong?

Try not sprinting at all, it helps heaps.

I tried running and gunning, got wrecked from every angle.

So I tried camping like a nub, get a kill, four or five guys flock to me from different directions (or sometimes the same direction, usually ignoring each other to go for me), get shot from every angle.

Tried being a ninja, works but doesn’t generally rack up the kills fast enough.

FFA is a -Yoink-

Really? I’d have thought that’d make you an easy target. Or does it give you an advantage over sprinting nutters?

Well, I can see Titans’ point. Sprinting, from experience, seems to make you highly vulnerable to ambush.

  • Aim for the headEdit: Oh thats my advice for Swat. Still applies here, though.

Kill steal. Kill steal. Kill steal.

It does actually! Can confirm.

Most people don’t realize that you can win an FFA match even with a negative K/D. It doesn’t matter how many times you die, it just matters how many kills you get. (For example, you can go 15k-0d, and get a Perfection; but if I go 25k-26d, then I win, and you lose, and you can polish your Perfection medal as you drop down in rank.)

So what does that mean? Well, a couple of things:

(1) Don’t play defensively. Be aggressive. Take chances. Challenge enemies to gun battles. It’s a race to 25 kills, so you can’t be hanging back, waiting your turn.

(2) Doesn’t that mean other players will get there faster, if you keep getting killed? Well, no, not really. On average, your deaths will be spread out across all the other players. Get killed one time by five different players, and they each only get 1 point. But if you kill each of them just once, you’ve got 5 points.

(3) Don’t keep trying to beat the best player. I know, your ego wants you to take him down. But even if you finally get him after five tries, he’s got 5 points and you’ve got 1. Congrats, you’re losing now. Instead, avoid him, and go after the worst players. Kill them over and over again. Congrats, you’re winning now.

(4) Search for ongoing gun battles. The strategy for FFA is generally the opposite of Team Slayer. Let two other people fight it out and then you ambush the victor, who will be already weakened. Don’t necessarily try to intercede, because then you’re making yourself one of the primary combatants and inviting other players to ambush you.

(5) What if someone else is also ambushing the victor? No problem. Turn your gun on him instead. He’ll probably just try to finish his ambush, so that he scores a point before he dies… which means you’ll get a clean kill without losing any health or armor.

(6) Oh, and one more thing: Use grenades. Lots of them. There’s no friendly fire in FFA, so spam away. You’ll steal so many kills, they’re be calling the police.

This guy knows the score! Lol but seriously, magnum, aim for head and kill steal. I got onyx in it and I honestly dont know how! I only won 2 games! Haha

I’ve only played 2 matches of free for all so you can take this as you will but in those matches and generally how I play is avoiding the middle of the map. I hug the corners/ outskirts of the maps you eliminate one side where you can be ambushed from just a tip.

Probably the best advice I have read about FFA for Halo 5.

I have only played a handful of FFA matches and everytime its chaos. Avoid directly confronting players, instead be a vulture pick off weakens foes. Seems like a generally good strategy for FFA, until you get sandwiched between two players.

  1. Stick to the outskirts of some maps, narrows down possible flanks. If you’re harder to flank, you’re harder to kill.
  2. No need to rush, sprinting in H5 is incredibly punishing, so refrain from doing it unless absolutely necessary. Keep your gun up and ready for a fight at all times.
  3. Patience is your greatest ally here. Force other players to make the first move, let them make mistakes. So don’t EVER chase players. Nothing frustrates a player more than purposely slowing the game and refusing to take their bait. If they get away, so be it. There’s always a next time.
  4. Power weapon spawns are death traps, due to them being constantly announced and always being shown on the map. Ask yourself if you think you’ll get more kills from the weapon, or more kills from baiting it, then act accordingly.
  5. Ignore your stats. Seriously. Nobody actually good at Halo cares about K/D. Go for the win, and only for the win.

This^^

FFA is a trial and error sort of game. Currently the spawns aren’t that great so a lot of who wins/who the top few players are depends on their spawns. For the most part don’t worry about winning FFA’s, in a tournament you just need to be top 4 to advance to the next round, the ranking system is pretty similar, get top 4, rank up, repeat.

Just kill everyone else and win… Good advice huh? I’m just kidding. I have only played one match. I won it in sudden death. I haven’t gone back… Don’t want to ruin the first impression… So do whatever i did. It worked.
But on a more serious note. I have always been very successful in previous halo games ffa. Keep circling in the same direction. Find a pattern that keeps your back to The wall as much as possible and remember when in a fire fight switch to your back up just before your primary runs out. Its faster than switching when you run out because the reload animation cuts off more than than a second before switching. Doesn’t sound like much time but it’s actually enough to get 2 shots off.
Good luck out there and have fun.

FFA is just frantic gameplay… maps are to small for 8 players. There really is no strategy that is effective… it can even be luck of the spawn as well.

There is always place where most of the players group up and duke it out. This you need to figure out where on the map the players are grouping up at. You then need to find a palce where to cut off/kill the people who are running toward the point of interest

Agreed… No real strategy. But there are a few ways to improve your success rate. Do not camp. People will almost always get the drop on you as you look the other way for targets. Keep moving and try to take advantage of other people in firefights. Both will be damaged and easier to get the clean up kill. Also, and i hate to exacerbate The fault; but take advantage of the horrible spawn problem and watch for reasons in the usual places… And never forget about the melee… Might seem obvious but close distance while firing and the melee hit might be the win if you end up having to reload… But don’t try to get fancy and chase someone down hoping for a cool assassination. More often than not somebody is going to shoot you in the back first. Just go for the kill.
Again. Just my two cents. The fast paced action of 8 player ffa on such small maps doesn’t leave much room for strategizing.

So guys, the best advice i have, is this

  1. kill steal, if you see two people going at it in a gun fight, wait until one shield drops and go for them then straight onto the next one
  2. Power weapons, if you control the rockets or sniper on coliseum you control the map, learn the maps, for example when i control the rail gun in the under water map (brain freeze sorry!) i’m averaging 4-5 kills with the rail before being killed
3 Power Ups, Learn where and when they spawn, the majority of power-ups will spawn at the beginning and 10-20 seconds after the power weapons spawn
  3. Learn the kill routes, what i mean by this is simple. You want to dominate the map from higher ground, and learn where everyone is aiing to get to, if everyone is running to blue base, get grenades chuck them in, sit where you can pick them off, use common sense and just because you’re getting kills dont get cocky and just run off

Finally, Youre CSR will improve as long as you’re in the top half of the table, you dont have to win to be upgrading however, winning gives you more obviously

I finally made oynx for FFA and my strategy was get power weapons and a close range gun (shotgun or smg) preferably and just slowly kill and wait for other to fight and clean them up
