Tips for a bad player?

I’m sure there’s a thread on here somewhere about this, but I’m just far to lazy to search through it. So forgive my potential repost. I’ve played Halo Wars for a while and I suck. I’ve managed to grind my way up to Colonel purely though the number of games played. I constantly get destroyed in 1v1, I manage to do well with a teammate purely because of support. I want to be a better player, but apparently I can’t teach myself how to play an RTS, so if anyone has somewhere to start it would be much appreciated.

Here’s a thread that lists a lot of youtube channels for high level players (including mine!). A good place to start is to watch some videos to see what you can improve upon.

Much appreciated!!

  • Constantly scout your enemy
  • Control the hooks (supply elevators/free reactors)
  • Harass your enemy to gain an advantage (poke at their base/steal their hooks)
  • Micro your units to win engagements
  • Watch bb’s videos

Find players that are better than yourself and are willing to play with you. I’d start at a skill level just above where you are, but not too far beyond. Then, trade up to better teammates until you get HL (teammates; as in people you play with regularly). I say this because you will be able to grasp the game better than if you were to only take advice from a HL player for a couple of weeks. You wouldn’t be applying basic concepts.

Always ask for HL opinions, but try to not to play online with a HL player too much (this is a plus for both of us, lol) because you will become dependent. It’s better for you to ease into becoming a HL player than it is for you to shoot right up to it. It’ll more than likely take a few months, but you will be a solid player rather than “that guy” that we all avoid. HL players like to see potential and we are more than happy to help, but make sure to keep your distance a little or you’ll miss the “why” and focus on the “do”. The “why” is what will make you good.
