Times Change - A Response to Critics of the Critics

The first Titanfall was one of the most anticipated shooters of the eighth console generation, and reportedly sold 2 million units on the Xbox One alone. The gameplay was innovative, fun, and launched the enhanced mobility trend. It was basically dead on arrival.

Games can no longer sell themselves on good gameplay alone. People want good progression systems, large selections of modes, and so on. The complaints against Halo Infinite in those regards are completely justified.

Whenever I complain about the lack of progression and rank system and having no incentive to play there’s several people on here that are quick to post comments like “whatever happened to playing for fun?”.

They don’t get it. You do though.

Then guess what Titanfall 2 did? It released on multiple platforms with great ratings from critics because of a very good story, a fun and new multiplayer and had a progression system that people liked. The only problem was the campaign and multiplayer progression could be completed in like three or four days lol so once everyone finished that, they swiftly moved on to the other AAA games that released that same year. I enjoyed it while it lasted.

But you’re right, everything is much more complex nowadays… it’s not enough to just have a phone in your pocket, that phone has to have internet, a camera and all these other gizmos and gadgets. This goes for nearly every product. I just figured 343 was going do something a little differently with Infinite, instead of focusing so much on the store sales.
