So I’m running into a pickle for a story that I’m working on, and I like for my stuff to be as close to the canon as possible. I’ve even been known to re-write sections based on new information.
On Waypoint here, it’s stated that the Spartan IV project began in September of 2552. By January 7, 2553, they had their first class of 145 candidates who began training on the ship. However according to Initiation, Palmer was approached in January of 2553, and she and four others were the only Spartan IV’s on the Infinity later on in January.
So I’m wondering which is which? Were there ample Spartan IV’s on the Infinity in early January, or were there only 5 later on in the month?
Isn’t it possible for them to both work? Maybe I’m misreading something, but the entry doesn’t specifically state when they began training. January 7th is when the first class was initiated. Could be that they started transferring to Infinity in late January.
Well, no. According to this site, by Jan 7th, there were 145 Spartan IV’s on the UNSC Infinity. According to Initiation, there were only 5 by mid to late January.

…Where exactly does it say that they were on the Infinity by the 7th?
I see that it says they had 145 candidates by January 7th. I see that it says they began training on INF-101 and other War Games-equipped facilities. But nowhere do I see anything indicating that all 145 S-IV, class 1 personnel were on the Infinity by Jan. 7th.
The article states that they were training on the Infinity, as well as other facilities, by January 7th. But in “Initiation” states that Palmer and her team of five were transferred to the Infinity in “late January,” and that they were the only ones on the ship. (My copy of “Initiation” is currently packed away, otherwise I’d look up exactly what it says.) From what can be gathered from “Escalation,” Palmer +4 weren’t there to train, they were a security detail for the Officers of Infinity.

I don’t see anywhere that says that. What the article does state is:
> By January 7, 2553, the SPARTAN-IV project would have a first class of 145 candidates.
So we know that they have their first class of candidates initiated (whatever that means. Selected, finalized, augmented, I don’t know) by Jan. 7th.
It then states:
> They began training at War Games facilities in a number of undisclosed sites, one being the highly classified UNSC starship called Infinity.
It’s possible that I’m misinterpreting this, but nowhere does it say when they began training, only that they began training at various War Games facilities including the Infinity at some point after that date. Nor does it state how many of them were on board Infinity for training.
EDIT: I think I read your initial post wrong, and ended up answering incorrectly. However, my point still stands. At no point does the article indicate that all 145 Spartan-IVs were aboard Infinity for training in January, thus it would be safe to assume that there were only five by mid-late January.
That could be, and if so then it doesn’t really bother my story. (I’ve got an ODST squad offered inclusion into the “early phases” of the Spartan IV project on Nov. 21, 2552). Whether they’re training on the Infinity or not wouldn’t be a huge issue. More what I’m looking to clarify - hoping that someone in-touch with 343i can maybe answer - is whether Sarah Palmer and her group of 5 were the first around late January, 2553 (as suggested in “Initiation”) or whether that’s a graphic novel oversight, and there were 145 S-IV’s by January 7th.
