Well I’m seeing alota negativity about Elites not being in MM. I’m a BIG Elite fan-boy trust me, but in my mind I see this as being an opportunity for Elites to return to their former glory.
The Elites in Halo CE were TALLER, STRONGER and TOUGHER than MC.
This made the Elite much more enjoyable and intimidating at the same time to fight (especially CQC). That itself added a lot of interest into the campaign, having to go toe to toe with a giant reptile most of the time, that could easily out-fight you if you didn’t have it together.
But Halo 2 hit and BLAM… so did Elites in MM. But with that factor came the curse of balancing, and the Elites suffered for it.
Now the Elites in campaign were pretty tricky with their shields in 2, but in NO way were they as intimidating being your 7’4" carbon copy counterparts. They ceased to add that bigger-than-you scary alien feel to them, which went down a treat with them in CE. It felt like the Brutes had taken their place as that alien.
And nothing has really changed since then. Reach went 50/50 with this role but that was only because SIII are just tall people really.
Now that I hear they’re not necessarily in MM, this is as good a time as any to break the shackles that make them the tiny toads they are today. 343 can refresh the Elites back into being the stronger, tougher 8’6" dinos they were that will do nothing but add more depth into the story-telling of the campaign.
The ideal model for the Elites I reckon would be THIS guy. I’m tired of seeing skinny under-fed excuses for Elites. Ripa was the best representation of what I think an Elites body profile should be. Tall, powerful, very muscular but yet very agile and athletic looking as well; much like a heavy-weight boxer (which is what Elites are like anyway).
C’mon 343, what’s holding you back from doing this? You can only gain from this
TL;DR Better to read, but basically: MAKE 343 TO MAKE ELITES BIG AGAIN!

Idk man the elites in reach were pretty nasty

Than Ripa? In what way you reckon?
Halo CE and Reach elites are the only ones I respect a legitimate threats
I understand where you’re coming from, but with what you said this could be the PERFECT time to do both.
Spartan IV’s where described as bigger and stronger, which could give a canon reason for Spartans being the same height as Elites.
In campaign, Chief is still a Spartan II. He would still be smaller than Elites, giving the feeling of fighting a huge, scary alien again.
In multiplayer, because of balance, the character models should be the same. Elites should stand upright, but to compensate for this, Spartans IV’s could be taller.
So there, it could’ve been the best of both worlds, but it didn’t happen.

Where dose it say VI’s are bigger and stronger? And if so, yeah I suppose that could be a remedy.
I really hope Elites remain one of the main enemies in Halo 4. Being relegated to a smaller role seems like such a shame and I hope that doesn’t equate to them being a pushover. I just wish they didn’t look so bad in Halo 4, they look like trash.

Yeah, hated the fact that in the books they seem such push-overs.
The new Elites look like hunchbacks to me…

Dont suppose you have read the books? Elites themselves admit they are an even match for spartan II’s 1v1, and that was before spartans got thier shields… And spartan II’s are much bigger than spartan III’s lol…
That being said i would like them to be a lot more vicous etc, but to be honest i cant see them being that big a threat. Arbiter has formed a truce with humanity, so for the time being at least the only enemy elites will be the rebel faction that opposes arbiter…
I think they look pretty intimidating so far, and to those that are saying they look like hunchbacks etc, the screens we have seen so far is of them poised in attack poses, you can still see how tall they would be standing straight…
The description of the first level of Halo 4 however the sound semi-formiddable, and the melee fight chief has with one sounds damn badass.
> Halo CE and Reach elites are the only ones I respect a legitimate threats
Especially when you have the right skulls on for Reach. They’re hard to kill.
While CE and Reach elites were bigger, Halo 2 elites seemed like highly skilled commandos. Except when they constantly jump on a box then jump off of the box, but that’s just a glitch. Also, the smaller elites made it so that you can play as an elite in matchmaking, which to most of the Halo community, is slightly more important than campaign.
I think the Halo 2 elites were the coolest elites. They would run around dual wielding plasma pistols and jumping. They were cool. The brutes filled the role of the big evil alien, and hunters were even bigger, but less evil aliens. We don’t need 3 big aliens, two is enough. We need more commando/ninja aliens.
The magazine article said that Elites would not be playable in COMPETITIVE Matchmaking.

I agree. They look more hunched over than the H3 Elites. They also look like the worst designed Elite out of all Halo games, their armor and hunched design is just nasty.
> The Elites in Halo CE were TALLER, STRONGER and TOUGHER than MC.
Actually I’m sure that the player with full shields could trade melee blows one for one with a major Elite on legendary and still survive with one health bar left. Regardless though, Elites are not stronger from a canonical standpoint, which you already know.

What you fail to realize is that the Elites had their “scary, alien intimidating factor” removed because that was the intention by Bungie at that point in the story. They were “humanized”, if you will, not because they needed to be smaller for multiplayer, but because their role in the story was changing and that required the player to view them in a different light; not as monsters and completely alien and intimidating, but as thinking feeling people who are going to switch sides in time.
> Now that I hear they’re not necessarily in MM, this is as good a time as any to break the shackles
No it’s not, if you know anything about narrative, characterization and the psychology of your readers. (Or players in this case) Peoples ability to relate and become attached emotionally to something is tied to how similar they are.
> add more depth into the story-telling of the campaign.
Such as? Your idea would perhaps make the gameplay deeper, but it would negatively impact the story in a variety of ways, including robbing the Elites of nearly all characterization.
> Except when they constantly jump on a box then jump off of the box, but that’s just a glitch.
That existed in H3 as well. It’s not a glitch. It’s a bad decision. One that Reach got rid of and CE never had.

You bring some good points to the table. I understand how being smaller could make players emphazise with the Elites, but why dose that need to be the case? Why do they need to lose their badassness so that they can be understood better. You can have these tall powerfully bulit looking allies that look and deal a lot of damage and feel good to have looking after your back (Arby) and have on the other hand these intimadating enemies to fight aswell.
I will have to jump on normal on CE to see weather what I said was right or not.
343 Elite design is the worse, the helmet is so weird and bad looking, and what about the forearms? I wonder what army sends their soldiers with missing important protective gear like this?
343 is dissapointing again.

Oh sorry guys. Disscussion OVER. This guy decieded that my thread is over because he loosely tied in what he’s been posting around the forum with my topic. Sorry all.
And another thing to add Elites aren’t going to be the main villians this time around it would seem. So why not put these changes into play if they’re taking more of a backseat?
