Tim Longo Lying About No Flood?

Just got done listening to the Game Informer podcast featuring Josh Holmes and Tim Longo. They they were addressing other questions, they were pretty thorough on their answers and explanations for why 343 made the changes that they did in Halo 5. When the question of the Flood came up, Josh Holmes chuckled and looked at Tim with a big smile and said, “I don’t know, do you want to handle that one?” And Tim quickly responded, “There are no Flood in the game. We’re not dealing with the Flood in this one. We’ve got other surprises in store.”

With all the allusion to the Flood returning in the comics (spirit of fire) and the large backstory of the Flood and the precursors in the forerunner novels, I just simply can’t believe that the Flood won’t be in Halo 5 in some capacity. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but I feel like they were quick to try and avoid the topic of the Flood in the interview.

I really don’t think it’s a good idea to jump to conclusions and call someone a liar. They might be holding surprises in store for you so you are actually surprised instead of giving it all away before Oct 27th.

I’m guessing he means we won’t see them as an enemy type. I don’t think they could go through the game without referencing them, especially if you’re bringing the elder races into it. Personally, I found battling the flood to be tedious at times, so I won’t be missing them.

I was just thinking about this.

Is it a possibility that he was being ambiguous when he said that? Perhaps he could imply there is no Flood ‘gametype’ in the game with the same wording, but Campaign can still have Flood?

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to put anyone down. I am simply asking if they are being misleading for a reason in order not to ruin surprises.

I found the Prometheans extremely tedious, so I’m a little concerned that they are so prominently focused on in Halo 5, to say the least.

Either it is a lie (the Rocksteady approach to openly lying about characters appearing in games), or maybe it’s a reference to the precursors returning instead.

Whatever they have in store, it better be worth every penny - ditching split screen/system link and customization, removing Firefight/SOs, and forcing online play means this “ambitious” game better have more than a monetized armour/weapon cache and a single new game mode (Breakout was more appealing to me than War zone appears to be, given everything they’ve cut in favor of a framers rate number and an undetermined/highly spotty dynamic resolution).

E3 and the handling of details by the devs and team since has all but killed my hype for this game (and around the beta, I was one of the defenders of the changes they brought in!). My main experience (couch coop with my dad through every other Halo game) has made me wonder if I should evem bother with the title, let alone renew my Gold membership in October.

Maybe I’m just bummed out from another highly anticipated release that was botched on my list (B:AK PC), but as a software developer, it is bad enough seeing game developers promise features that are cut. Before 1080p 60 FPS was EVER the main objective of the engine, they should have promoted a solid and faithful Halo experience. I have yet to see what makes this game so special, at least special enough to cut so much after the beta and ensuing comments relating to it. If this game has a sub-10 hour campaign and only Arena and Warzone, then I doubt I will be buying it afterall at this point. And since they aren’t reliably hitting 1080p or 60fps currently as of E3, then my faith in any of their promises is void at this point.

Aside from the last two paragraphs which were a total rant completely unrelated to the topic (though I agree with you), I don’t know enough about the precursors to get hyped over it. Are they similar to the Flood? If no Flood, why show a mysterious and foreboding shot of a Flood spore on the Spirit of Fire in Escalation? It just doesn’t make sense.

Precursurs are basically What the Flood are… Please look up the precursors and the flood on youtube. 3 guns down summarises it up quite nicely.

Precursors created the forerunners they are like the GODS of the Halo Universe
They were capable of many many things

It’s healthier to assume he was telling the truth and be pleasantly surprised if they show up. Than to expect them to be there, and be let down when they don’t, despite them telling you they wont be.

It’s pretty obvious to me he is lying. Didn’t everyone watch the E3 demo? In Sunaion, there was water everywhere! I’m fairly certain that constitues a flood.

In wargames, the map Escape from ARC, there were forcefields holding an ocean back. There’s the flood again.

I hope he is lying. I love fighting the flood. The Library is one of my all-time favorite Halo missions.

I don’t know if he was lying. Couldn’t tell if his pants were on fire in that podcast.

Best response to the topic.

And I apologize for the rant - this was my first post back after months of riding the hype train and being let down by multiple triple A devs and their products. But based on past communication from the devs, as evidenced by the cut content/features (barely relevant in the rant but noted for it), you can’t trust anything they say to hold water.

Having the precursors as the stand in for the flood not only tip toes around the topic, but it also covers any surprises related to the game and their involvement. However, they aren’t exactly the same as the flood forms we know from the past, so technically they are different (if only slightly). I’m betting they pull a twist much like CE did with the flood at first, or 2 did with the arbiter, in that the flood-like threat pulls the group together once they finally meet, which while expected, would be significantly different than the trailers have been building toward.

IDK…maybe we’ll see the precursors???

“There are no Flood in the game. We’re not dealing with the Flood in this one. We’ve got other surprises in store.”
There’s no ambiguity in that answer. He blatantly says they aren’t in the game. Campaign is part of the game, so no they won’t be there.

I see no reason to suspect he is lying. The Flood may be built up to in this game, however.

I sure do hope he was lying! I miss the flood. :’(

If so, he would have said “There is no Flood in the game”, not “There are no Flood”. Good assumption, though, and I certainly hope it’s true.

If it’s the Ancient Flood or a new “evolution” of the Flood he wouldn’t be necessarily lying, semantics and such, am I right?

Right.
Does the Gravemind count as ‘The Flood’?
