I’ve always wondered why most, if not all of the modern interpretations of halo rings in the skyboxes tilt the rings a few degrees off… It’s just distracting and doesn’t make sense. Anyone know why? All of the original rings were properly aligned, straight up, right above you, straight down. They even changed it in the Halo ce and 2 anniversary remasters.
I think the idea behind it is that the interior surface of the ring is supposed to be concave (or perhaps convex), and so as you stand closer towards the edge of the ring, the plane of the ring appears inclined. There’s nothing improper about it per se, and I believe the artists just think it looks more interesting than a perfectly flat ring. However, the effect seems exaggerated and inconsistent across levels relative where you seem to be on the ring. The ring models used in cutscenes and Halo CEA menu also are inconsistent with this, always appearing flat.
I think it’s an interesting effect that can give a bit of variation and a better sense of location. However, I think the artwork should seek to be more consistent and accurate to better convey what’s happening. In particular, some of the skyboxes, even when you are seemingly close to the edge of the ring (like Tempest) appear to be drawn as if you were straight in the middle.
