Thursters, but only to the sides and backwards

I see a lot of hate for Halo 5’s version of thrusters. But when I look more closely most hate comes from thrusters pushing players forward and catering to shotgun rushers and resulting in charged melee’s.

Yeah, I hate those too.

But thrusting backwards was a good way to get out of a gunfight you didn’t want to be in anymore.
And thrusting to the side was a great addition to the dance: an extra way to strafe.

Both of these versions of thrusters were never a problem or game-breaking.

I hope 343i considers putting thusters back in Halo Infinite as a standard ability your Spartan always has. But just only thrusters going to the sides or backwards and never forward.

Cheers!

The thrusters ruin the Halo formula as a Spartan ability. They seem to be coming back however they need to only be a pick up. For most classic players the thrusters were borderline unbearable.

I actually think the shotgun is the least of the problems caused by the thrusters. They make the survivability of the Spartan much higher. The range of movement available in Halo 5 is something else. It creates really fast paced and explosive gameplay where forcing and predicting the enemies thrust is essential to winning gunfights. It also makes pre-nading much less impactful, which is one of my favourite aspects of the legacy games. Having thrusters means higher aim assist and bullet magnetism is required, it also means that gameplay is really quick paced.

I think slower gameplay and slightly longer kill times is what makes casual Halo work well. I think they’ve made a good decision to move Halo more towards 3 than 5 to capture more of the fanbase. It also looks like they’ve taken good strides to make Halo a good competitive environment. Using Bronze to Onyx is a great idea to create a balanced ranking system.

Why do they ruin “the Halo formula”? As far as I know they add to the dance.

Thruster as a pickup would be great, but not as an ability.

No, they detract from the Dance they turn the waltz into a boogie

also, thruster is returning as an on map pick up like threat sensor or grappleshot

Halo at it’s core has always been about horizontal strafing and crouching for the “dance”. Thrusting basically ruins this entirely. It increases the movement too much and takes the enemy out of combat too abruptly. This is why people disliked the faster sprint in the past.

I don’t see how thrusting “ruins” that entirely. Thrusting left or right during a gunfight is nothing more than a giant strafe. It makes the strafing less predictable and therefore adds to the strafing i.m.o.

That’s the problem. It’s a giant strafe. I’m just stating as a classic player it’s a huge no-go for me. It’s not about being less predictable. It’s important for Halo at it’s core to have this at least not as a Spartan ability. Making things “harder” or adding more movement doesn’t always make the game better. Halo Reach - Halo 5 proved this.

Don’t agree. It’s not that you can spam your thrusters left and right all the time during a gunfight. If it is up, you can have one thrust during a gunfight. That isn’t gamebreaking or anything. Just one unpredictable strafe from a thruster during a bunch of regular strafes.

I know it comes back as a pickup. We’ll see how that goes.

It ruins the Halo formula and it literally is game breaking if everyone has it for me. I’m not alone since the majority of classic players hated the thrusters. You have your opinion which is completely fine and I have mine.

Those are just personal opinions. Talking about “Halo at it’s core” as if there is some factual core of what Halo is. No, maybe how you personally feel about it. Just like how some people state that Halo shouldn’t have sprint, because the original 3 didn’t have sprint. While at the same time sprint is now longer in the game, than the time it was not in the game. Halo 1, 2, 3, Reach, 4 and 5 had all huge differences between them. All games had good and bad aspects. But those good and bad aspects are all personal.

Alright, agree to disagree. The only problem I have is you’re talking about the “Halo formula” as if it is some fact about what that is. That will differ from person to person. Depends what game they liked most, or maybe what game they first played.

I stated “for me”… It would be weird in life to have to designate everything you believe apart from everyone else. I get what you are saying however Halo means something different to everyone and I can only speak for some people I know and myself.
