Thruster packs were an interesting idea on paper, but 343’s execution on the mechanic has made it worse than what sprint has done to affect game play. The biggest problem with them now is how much distance they cover within a split second. Couple this with its omni-directional movement, the ability to use it while being shot, a slow overall TTK for precision weapons, and you have yourselves a slow paced game. This mechanic has been the biggest factor for why players have been able to easily prolong or even escape disadvantageous gunfights, as the distance covered is more than enough for them to get back to safety. Not only this, but its usage in a gunfight is difficult to predict because players can use it any time, and the enemy must have great aim to track such fast movement. The only balance factor that the thruster pack has is that you can’t shoot while using it, but that’s not nearly enough to combat its effects on game play. Here are my proposals to revise the thruster pack.
- Wall kick (developed by Gobias on Team Beyond)
“This propels you perpendicular to the surface so that your horizontal movement speed equals the base speed. Like Thruster, a Wall Kick can throw off your opponent’s aim and keep him wondering about when you’ll do it, but unlike Thruster, it is limited in where it can be performed: you have to be next to a wall in midair instead of just… anywhere. It would be impractical to use the Wall Kick to escape most scenarios, as the fastest escape routes usually run parallel to walls, not perpendicular. There would also be a increased possibility space (meta) in situations where you are near a wall: when you jump into the wall, you could rebound off of it, or you could just slide down it, making for some interesting battles.”
2.Cut the distance covered by thruster pack in half while slightly reducing the time needed to fire your weapon again. Not only will escaping disadvantageous situations be less effective, but the use of it in combat would be more predictable as players require less tracking (or swiping of the aiming reticule) of the thrusting enemy to regain him in their sights. Thruster packs would be useful in throwing off aim but would have limited success compared to right now.
- Bring back the halo 4 thruster pack and add the ability to shoot, while making the camera remain in first person (unlike 4). Players can shoot back while using the thruster pack, but their trajectory is predictable as they are now locked in a certain direction for about 2 seconds, allowing the enemy to outstrafe them if they are skilled enough. It also gives a player more time to chase opponents who have backed up to cover using their thruster pack.
What do you think of these revisions?
Thruster is fine the way it is but if I had to pick it would be 2

I can already tell that 2 would be the most popular option at this forum.
I haven’t had a problem with the thrusters. I notice many people on Waypoint here do, but in my opinion super soldiers with advanced suits would have thrusters. I think they provide more strategic options into game play. In real life if in a fight to the death you would charge, punch, or jump your enemy if it presented an advantage. I think they are fine.

I don’t understand why you would want to justify game play mechanics with comparisons to real life, or the concept of super soldiers based on lore. Games should be focused around having the most fun game play (without influence of immersion/realism), not to mention that very few games have been focused on realistic combat to begin with (which have mostly catered to very niche players). I’m not even trying to remove thrusters anyway, I’m just wanting to improve them.
I enjoyed the h4 thruster for ninjas and stuff. However the camera change or the animation from the player using it is fairly wonky. Now spam that thruster in action sack and it looks like you are bobbing for apples instead of playing a fps.
aside from that, out of those options I would pick #2.

For 3, the camera will still be on first person considering how you are able to shoot now (I mean, who wants to aim in third person?). Should’ve made that more clear from the beginning.

Please elaborate man. Why can’t some of us try to present more thought into our discussions?
I like the way thrusters work, I just don’t like how some armor sets don’t have the necessary jet ports.

Well thrust was a good add on to your spartan since you can get a better strafe at your enemy and get to cover easier

Did you read my first paragraph in the OP? Because I did thoroughly explain why those 2 points of yours were bad for halo 5.

The real world comparison was not my intended point, I sort of focused on it though. I think they provided a great strategic ability while in combat. It allows you to dodge fire if caught in a poor position, you can reverse position on an enemy who is unprepared, and it also allows you to make further jumps that can allow you to reach a better position for combat. I just sort of think they are fairly balanced. Maybe a little to far thrusting as you suggested, but I do not think I would change them.
Thruster Packs and Sprint just need to be taken out of the game. They ruin Rifle/Pistol battles.

Why do you think players should be given a second chance with thruster packs for being caught in a poor position? A game mechanic that makes bad plays more forgiving will only reduce the overall skill gap in map positioning and frustrate good players who deserved that kill for smart choices…
The jumps that you can make with thruster packs are entirely dependent on whether the map designer intended for you to make those jumps. If you didn’t have a thruster pack in the game, the designer would make adjustments so that you can make those same jumps regardless of whether you have a thruster pack or not. The developers have designed their maps with all of those movement options in mind, so it wouldn’t make a difference if your movement was restricted to a base movement speed, as map developers would simply revise the map to accommodate for your movement speed. You get what I’m saying?

Probably, but this isn’t about sprint or the removal of thruster packs.

You claimed it made for a slow paced game. Most of my games are very fast paced.

This. The whole “this specific [new] mechanic needs revision/removed” is tiresome. Thrust is fine. It’s great for player movement control and adds a dynamic to gunfights, especially close quarters ones, that Halo needs. Never once have I felt unjustly denied a kill by it, as was the case with Halo: Reach sprint (for example).

I don’t know how you would revise them, they have been ridiculous since 4. They make Rifle/Pistol battles a chore since everyone can just thrust into cover at the last second.
I think they’re fine just the way they’re
