Throwback playlist

I would really like to have a throwback playlists (permanent) with this features:

Armor Abilities: On
It must be an H5 playlist, so H5 mobility.

Sandbox:
Starting Weapons: Classic BR + AR
Only one HCE Magnum on the map as power weapon

Maps:
Battle Creek (Beaver Creekm Battle Canyon)
Chill Out (Cold Storage)
Prisoner (Solitary)
Damnation (Penance)
Derelict (Desolation)
Rat Race
Wizard (Warlock, Warlord)
Lockout (Lockdown)
Ascension (Pinnacle)
Ivory Tower (Reflection)
Midship (Truth)
Sanctuary (Shrine, Refuge)
The Pit (Pitfall)
Guardian
Assembly
Arena Zealot
Countdown
Uncaged
Sword Base
Haven (Mercy)
Skyline
Impact

The selection of the maps voluntarily excludes those of medium-large size, to focus on the medium-small ones. Many of these maps are already played in H5 thanks to Forge. Just make someone else.

A playlist like this would be social, but you could enter an invisible ranking system (MMR) to balance the games.

I’d be all for the Anniversary Throwback playlist being brought into the ranked environment along with some changes that would make it more of a mixed-bag offering.

The changes I’d like to see are these:

  • Make it a combination of the current Combat Evolved Anniversary stuff (that already populates it) and Halo 2 Anniversary. I love the concept of pairing Halo 5’s game-play (abilities and all) on older maps w/ simulated sandboxes.
  • Add remakes of these Halo 2 maps:

Lockout
Sanctuary
Ivory Tower
Beaver Creek
Tombstone
Turf (or Colossus)

  • The mode offerings (per map) to be added:

Lockout Slayer
Sanctuary Slayer
Sanctuary CTF
Ivory Tower Slayer
Beaver Creek Slayer
Beaver Creek CTF
Tombstone Slayer
Turf 1-Flag** (or Colossus CTF)

  • Mimic the Halo 2 sandbox as such:

Battle Rifle = Halo 2 Battle Rifle*
(H2A Assault Rifle) = Assault Rifle*
M6C Magnum = Gunfighter Magnum
SMG = SMG
(H2A Silenced SMG) = Silenced SMG
Shotgun = Shotgun
Rocket Launcher = SPNKR Rocket Launcher
Sniper Rifle = Sniper Rifle
Fragmentation Grenade = Fragmentation Grenade
Chaingun Warthog = Chaingun Warthog
Carbine = Carbine
Plasma Rifle & Brute Plasma Rifle = Brute Plasma Rifle
Plasma Pistol = Plasma Pistol
Needler = Needler
Sword = Relic Sword
Particle Beam Rifle = Halo 2 Beam Rifle
Sentinel Beam = Safeguard Sentinel Beam
Brute Shot = N/A
Plasma Grenade = Plasma Grenade

OS = OS
AC = AC

  • Loadout weapons
    • Assuming the custom 1-Flag mode can be made ready for matchmakingEven if the Anniversary Throwback playlist remains social and rotational I still would love to see this particular refresh to the playlist.

Imho, Tombstone and Colossus are too big for a competitive contest. I think it would be better to use the last official MLG selection (2007):

Lockout
Midship
Sanctuary
Warlock
Beaver Creek

Why does it have to be an H5 playlist with abilities on? The H3 throwback playlist didn’t have abilities and I think the CE playlist only has them on because H5’s version of the CE magnum is too OP in this game, but if there’s only one then it shouldn’t be that much of an issue.

I gave some serious consideration toward what you bring up, but ultimately choose not to be so strict with the map selection.

  • I wanted a Halo 2 map count and map-to-mode count that equaled the total amount of CE maps and modes within the playlist, so six maps and eight total options w/ modes. Adding Halo 2 Anniversary would simply double the count; thus, players would have a pretty equal opportunity to play either a CE or H2 mode when searching. - I felt that my willingness to expand beyond the last official Halo 2 MLG map selection still needed to focus on choosing maps that were primarily about infantry combat and not so much vehicular combat. So I initially dropped consideration for Turf and Ascension which seemed like they could have been decent options. I thought that the vehicles could be dropped, but at the same time the vehicles help somewhat define these maps so I simply choose to omit them - at least initially. I eventually came around to thinking that having one map that featured a single vehicle with limited use could be quite enjoyable which is how I came to select Turf (assuming 1-Flag becomes a workable mode). - The primary reason I didn’t select Midship is because I feel it’d be a bit trivial to remake a map that the developers basically already provided with Truth. But at the same time I wouldn’t want to substitute a developer map into a Throwback playlist, so I just dropped Midship from consideration despite it being perhaps the most popular competitive Halo 2 map. - Ivory Tower was an MLG tournament map until some time in 2006 (I believe) when it was removed. Nevertheless, I felt it still held some competitive merit that warranted inclusion. I remember it always being a pretty competitive asymmetrical map that hearkened back to some of the positional strategies of Combat Evolved. I do have a little bit of concern with regards to frame-rate issues due to an operating lift. - I also debated the idea of having a couple maps that provided some overlap between the CE & H2 modes. The obvious similarities between Battle Creek and Beaver Creek plus Hang 'Em High and Tombstone accomplish this. I figured this could potentially help newer players because it effectively reduces the amount of maps that they have to learn. - Warlock was heavily considered because it was an MLG map, but I thought it’d play best as a Slayer only map and I kind of wanted another map that would be better for CTF. Also given my desire for some map overlap between CE & H2 I thought that maybe down the road as part of another refresh effort 343i could add Warlock and Wizard plus Desolation and Derelict to the playlist if they wanted to expand it. - While Colossus is on the larger side I think it would play well with Halo 5’s movement and the H2BR. It also provides another ideal CTF map so that the playlist isn’t super Slayer heavy. My main concern with it deals with the conveyors that move boxes as I imagine the map’s size along with those features could potentially destroy the frame-rate. I eventually re-thought this selection and decided to replace it with Turf with its potential limited vehicular use and possible 1-Flag play. - Foundation and Elongation were other considerations. I didn’t think the Turrets within Foundation would be ideal given they’d be removable now and might mess with the map’s balance too much. And I was a little concerned about frame-rate issues plaguing an Elongation remake given the conveyors moving boxes. Plus, ideally a working Elongation map could be included within that refresh effort I spoke about above that would see it paired with CE’s Longest which makes six potential maps for adding some time down the road if it was thought to be a good idea. - I couldn’t bring myself to consider either Gemini or Backwash. Aesthetically, I’ve seen some great Backwash remakes (and re-imaginings), but I just don’t see it being ideal for the playlist; especially, if it had any inspiration to be adopted for the ranked environment. I remember Gemini always turning into a fairly chaotic mess and better served as a social map back in the day, so I figured that’d be a pretty poor choice too.

Because i think 343 will never put a playlist without abilities in Arena :slight_smile: Perhaps a hybrid mode like Anniversary Throwback has more chances…

I thank you for this.

Imho, Midship can’t miss.

Ivory Tower had a splendid flow. It was very popular and is also great for competitive play, so I would keep it.

There was one thing I loved a lot in HCE and H2: small maps. They allowed the headshot - melee - grenade triangle, a typical trait of the first two chapters. From H3 onwards the spaces have become more open, with the exception of a few maps. For this reason, if I want to create a competitive mode based mainly on HCE and H2 (although I would at least guardian H3) I would prefer to keep small maps, and no vehicles. But it is my modest opinion.

Foundation and Elongation, Gemini and Backwash were funny in Team Slayer, but i don’t see them very good for competitive gaming.

Overall, Thank you for taking seriously my proposal. I think you too, like me, think it’s a shame not to have a competitive throwback playlist. I am a great lover of the old chapters, and I would really like it if that thing were realized. As well as, in addition to arena, I would also put a slayer Throwback (no objective).
I hope that 343 can be convinced that so many people love those games, those maps, and being able to play them only on social media, in rotation among others, is a real pity.

The H3 Throwback playlist was around for a few weeks before it got removed and it didn’t have any abilities in it. At this point, I think 343 only care about population numbers so if it stays popular then it will likely become permanent.

I think that the popularity of a playlist is given not only by it but also by how all the others are managed, For example:

Team Slayer is the most popular mode on Halo, always. I myself wanted to play Throwback anniversary but, as I often play only and I prefer to play only slayer, I did not play throwback. Instead, if there was a slayer throwback, I would have played a lot of them.

To tell the truth I have never seen well objective modes, which are very competitive, in the social area. I think that if we wanted to give space to throwback, the whole organization of playlists should be reviewed. Something like this:

ARENA (objective & Slayer)

  • Team Arena
  • Throwback Arena
  • Team Double
  • Elimination

SLAYER (no objective)

  • Team Slayer
  • Throwback Slayer
  • Team Swat
  • Free for All
