Thoughts on the word 'Infinite' for the subtitle?

When Halo Infinite was announced, I was initially surprised by the choice of the word Infinite in the title. As previous Halo games had either received numerical designations or referenced major characters/plot points in their titles, such as the Guardians in Halo 5: ‘Guardians’ & Halo 3: ‘ODST’. The word ‘Infinite’ in the title feels ambiguous and as the definition of Infinite is: “Limitless or endless in space, extent, or size; impossible to measure or calculate”, it feels like a general term to describe any powerful character or weapon in Halo and doesn’t highlight or allude to what may happen in the Campaign, like Halo 5’s and other titles do.

Although I’m sure that there’s a good reason for the chosen title, I’m concerned that it will not be as iconic or memorable as previous titles as a result of the issues I’ve explained.

I’m curious as to what you think of it and if you would have preferred 343 to use adifferent subtitle?

I’d probably use the word subtitle instead of tagline in this situation, but that doesn’t really matter.
I think what you’re forgetting is Halo: CE, which isn’t named after a group of characters or plot points. Instead, it’s just a descriptor of the game. If I think of Halo Infinite in this way, then I could see it being a live service, which is a popular trend in gaming nowadays. I know a lot of people would probably be mad about it being a live service, but honestly that’s how most major, successful games are at this point. The only downside I could see would be for people who solely play campaign. I think it would benefit the rest of us because we wouldn’t have to wait so long between major updates.

Thanks.

If 343 used Infinite in the context you described, that makes sense and is the most likely reason depending on how they plan to support the game post-release.

However, if was meant to reference something in the Campaign, I’d like them to to use an adjective that’s more precise and memorable.

For example, COD: Advanced Warfare made sense because the game was about advanced warfare but the COD: Infinite Warfare didn’t, unless taken as hyperbole.

I just don’t want it to mean any time travel or parallel universe nonsense.

I think it’s interesting how the game’s title is “Halo Infinite” rather than “Halo: Infinite.” Whereas Halo 5 was titled “Halo 5: Guardians.” This leads me to believe that its not a tagline or subtitle at all.
Perhaps it’s just an aesthetic choice, but I feel like the Halo Infinite development team has chosen the name and display of the name with much thought.
I don’t think its a statement about the game’s setting and lore, but maybe more about the attitude and approach the game has taken. This game seems to have a lot more consideration towards Halo’s roots than any other 343 title before it. It’s meant to excite and isn’t nearly as bland as “Guardians.”

It reminds me of “Batman Forever,” though hopefully not its equal in quality.

I’m nitpicking here, but there’s no colon between Halo and Infinite

That was a habit I had to break too. I thought the little nod to this trend in the Community Update was fun.

It’s crap. Infinite is one of those overused title words marketing people shudder and focus groups shudder beat to death.

Call it ‘Halo…The Spaghetti Incident?’

P.S. In all seriousness just call it ‘Halo 6’ or something more ominous sounding like ‘Halo 6: Vengeance’ or ‘Halo 6: Gravemind’s Electric Boogaloo’

I keep mentally adding the colon lol

It’s hard! We’ve had Halo 3**:** ODST and Halo**:** Reach, and now Halo… Infinite? Definitely a break from previous formats. I can’t wait to see if it could mean anything.

Obviously Infinite alludes to an overwhelming set of features to accommodate User-Generated Content. Customise your Spartan; multiplayer levels; game modes; and the real game-changer… Custom Campaign: re-populate any campaign level with your own enemy encounters and share online. Infinite Halo baby

That makes more sense than it being tied into the Campaign.

If it’s a good game, I’d be more than happy for it to allow that kind of player freedom.

I would rather it be called Halo 6: Infinite. I like numerical orders.

I think it’s hard to comment on the name of the game before playing the thing itself. Maybe it fits, but I have zero idea.

343i had stated a long time ago they wanted to get away from numbering games so it doesn’t surprise me at all and expect them not to return from here on out, at least for mainline games, though I personally prefer them to keep the numbers, really not a big deal to me though at the end of the day.

As for what I think Infinite implies? I really have no idea, we have so little information to go on I couldn’t guess. There is one thing I hope it doesn’t mean though; I do NOT want to fight infinite wardens lol Unless they made him more fun to fight like rebalancing him to kinda be the promethean equivalent of a Hunter. As a boss though, I really don’t want to fight several of them again like in H5.

Halo 6: Gravemind’s Electric Boogaloo, would outsell Halo 3 on name alone lol.

Hasn’t 343 said they want to move away from the numerical designations? Which is why Halo 5 had the subtitle ‘Guardians’ and Infinite has no number at all?

They did say that somewhere, but I cannot remember the reason they gave for not using a numerical system going forward

I don’t know about the official stance of Microsoft/343, but I think it just adds to the negative perception of long-running series. Making people think: “Oh this again…?” Imagine if CoD still used its original numbering system that it got rid of after the first Modern Warfare, or of the perception casual people have of the Final Fantasy games. It may not be a big deal, but I think it adds just a little negativity anyway.
