Thoughts on the new doubles

So I’m not sure if anyone feels like I do but except for it being able to be ranked, I’m not happy with the new doubles here’s why:
1.Maps
Im not sure who’s idea it was to put 4v4 maps into dubs. But the maps seem too open, and empty now, with specific spots being an overkill if combined with my other points.
2.Spawns
Ive been playing the new doubles for a bit now and it seems like when people are desperate they try to spawn trap, now by no means am I saying that getting map control is too hard but I do think that getting people to spawn right before your eyes as you snipe them is unfair and spawns should be moved a bit.
3:Power weapons
At this point people think probably think “oh this kids just mad he got smacked” and that’s fine, but I think many should agree when I say 3 power weapons and a power up on a 4v4 map is too much for doubles.

completely agree. most if not all of the 4v4 maps are unsuited for doubles. i love how they said they where getting their arena maps ready for double but its obvious that they where not tested. as if its not obvious that they would not have worked to begin with. but some reasons that they dont work and some personal things that i hate about it.

  1. the spawn are not set for doubles and and will most likely never work well because these maps where never designed for doubles.

  2. the amount of power weapons as the op said two to three primary power weapons on each map is too much (2 primary power weapons and a secondary is too much eg. rig sniper, plasma caster = primary scatter shot = secondary)

  3. the map size and camo is a very bad combo and is very bad on rig combined with its unnecessary amount of weapons. power ups are far stronger in doubles the 4v4 slayer or arena. 343i you know you have 4 power ups right i know damage boost may be a bit much but speed boost has be a little forgotten/disowned if its never use how do u know if it is good for anything. personally i think it could work well in doubles maybe some may think it needs a bit of a buff but i think it would be fine. with the size of the maps and how some are designed make it easy far more easy to control a power up compared to team slayer/arena.

  4. another thing you choice of power weapons would it -Yoinking!- kill you to not put the -Yoinking!- sniper on every -Yoinking!- map you possibly can seriously its horrible and ever map ends up being played the same. imo its really bad for game play the maps end up being play the same and it alos take the place of a weapon that could be better suited for the map or mode. the forged maps had this problem but they where smaller so its power was far less overpowering.the maps are all too big which is the obvious when you play with half the intended player count what did you think was going to happen 343i the maps would feel clustered and to small?.

  5. the simple fact here is that the forge maps where far better suited for doubles considering that they where made for them its fine to have your dev made maps in the mode but in it they have be properly adjusted for double. if this is how your going to treat you mode that the com unity told you to put in that you might as well put btb maps in all arena modes because its the same as what you have done to double. the overly sized maps the overly used power weapons, the unsuited spawns, the unsuited map designs . . .i could continue but i assume you get the point.

what 343 has done would be the same as putting btb maps in team arena mode obviously it would not work so why would doing it the doubles be any different it may not be to the same scale but its the same none he less

My buddy and I have played 6 games so far and we love it, haven’t had any issues yet.

Weve played on:

Overgrowth
Regret
The Rig
Truth
Empire
Tyrant

I like that the sniper replaced the rockets on Empire, and I’ve been fine with the power weapons as well, especially with the decreased ammo.

Having the power ups are fine for me as well, and don’t become problematic as long as you keep track of the timer (spawns 2 minutes after it was last picked up). If the other team beats you to it at the start, just make sure you’re in position 2 minutes later to fight them off and snag it, and take note of when you picked it up so you can be there for the next one.

Tip: if the map has a power up, always go for that right off of spawn instead of the power weapon, that should come secondary. If you get the first one, it’s a lot easier to keep getting it throughout the rest of the game.

Also with shotguns and other “tier 2” power weapons, they respawn 10 seconds after the last one has no more ammo and is left on the ground. Control those weapons and the power ups, and you can use those on fight over the main tier 1 power weapons. It’s pretty tough to make a run at a sniper rifle when you’ve got shotgun and overshield comin at ya!

for me i know all this im a diamond/onyx lvl player but when it comes to the maps imo they feel sloppy and over saturated with power weapons compared to the community made forge maps which where appropriately sized and had a nice amount of weapons. see the problem with the maps is they snowball badly heres why (dev arena compared too community forged)

  • (weapons) (dev made), the weapon amount is set up for 4v4 and when you put this in a 2v2 mode if a team can successfully obtain all three power weapons and the power up then that becomes a real problem when one team has all the weapons since in a 4v4 there is normally 1 or 2 players on that team with normal weapons but for doubles one side can have two player holding multiple power weapons which can snowball a game for them. (community made) this same problem can happen but the community maps had fewer power weapons 1 to 2 main power weapons or 1 main and 1 secondary power weapon and with the way they where sized and designed they did not snowball any where as hard.
  • (map size/design/spawns) (dev made) with the size of the dev made maps and the way they are designed it gives players too much breathing room since if one team can even set up a little bit then the amount of breathing room makes it far harder to brake out of since they can push or back of a bit when ever they need too with out it affecting their set up much that combined with the spawns does not work well. this makes games turn from even to completely one sided fast turning in too a spawn trap as soon as one team get enough of the power weapons to over power them even a little bit. ( community made) the map size and design is made for doubles and so are the spawns. as for the problem in the dev part ^^^ it does still happen but no where near as badly and is easier to break out of creating more even games and reducing the chances for one team to snowball the other. on a few notes with the snipers i do like the them but i strongly feel that they are spammed on far too many maps making all of those maps play very similar beside them playing alike in terms of the weapon which in turn changes how you play that map it also take way the chance to use other weapons that could even suit the map far better and give more variety in how the map is played. timing power weapons and power ups and gaining map control is great and all and its what is great about halo but when though mechanics become too easy and overpowering they snowball and when this happens they stop being good mechanics and become unfair and unbalanced. yes you will always get though’s kind of games but it should not be to the currant extent that is is for doubles right now you should be able to tone back how baldly it happen and how often it happen witch is what the community maps did which is why i think they are far more suited for doubles .

in my 10 placement games me and my friend dominated the enemy in 5 games, got dominated in 4 games, and only had 1 close and even match witch was a win … but 9 out of 10 games where completely one sided which is unacceptable.

Fair point. We haven’t gotten dominated yet, but we have dominated In a few of the 6 we have played, but I do get what you’re saying, and I can see how that’s a problem, maybe I just didn’t notice it in our games.

Im actually deciding right now that I’m gonna try to come up with some ideas on how to balance the Dev made maps better for 2v2, make em in forge, and try to get them to check em out. Cause while I didn’t feel the same way you did about Doubles, I can see where you’re coming from and I know they’re not perfect as they are now. Shoot me a message if you wanna throw some ideas around about some changes and we can forge em together if you’d want to! I just really don’t care for forge maps that much (cause they usually look like legos) so I’m wanting to make sure the Dev maps stay in, even if some areas are blocked off or altered in some way.

I have no problems with the dev maps for 2v2. I actually prefer them over the community maps. Ammo count is reduced and there isn’t an over abundance of power weapons on any of the maps in my opinion. Only thing I can ask for is to put obj gametypes into the playlist. However, I am perfectly fine with adding in community maps to the playlist. I think it’ll be a great addition.

So the common doubles teams I see execute the following pattern:

  1. prevent you from getting BRs, DMRs
2)prevent you from the power weapons
    3)spawn kill you

The weapon spawn locations and overrall, the weapon selections on most maps are definitely awful.

The spawning…oh god. The big downside is when a doubles team spawn kills you, you cant respawn and attack effectively bc youre constantly being spawned in a hole or below the enemy team. AWFUL. Most levels have upper and lower locations, i get it, but to constantly be spawned in the hole of a map (that the enemy team can dictate rather easily) is not my idea of fun.

Halo 3 actually did doubles perfectly: BRs were plentiful and at any given point, I was awarded a decent chance at least mounting some offense against the enemy.

Doubles in Halo 5 is not good and im not happy with it one bit. I’ve also experienced a lot of matches with not having a doubles partner…the system drops them and im left alone.
