Thoughts on the marketing push behind Halo 4.

Hey, all.
Short but sweet.

ITT, Post your thoughts and opinions on the marketing/advertising push behind Halo 4.

In my opinion, even with Gamefuel and FUD, it feels… Underwhelming. Especially when in comparison to Halo 3, which felt like a huge cultural event. Honestly, I just want a good gameplay trailer/advertisement, similar to “The Battle Begins” trailer for Reach.

Underwhelming? Ever since the release of the new Scanning trailer I’ve seen it on TV almost every night. It was played during all of the Sunday night football games I watched. All you want is another trailer? I don’t see the need but I do agree a gameplay trailer couldn’t hurt. FuD is starting to get REEEEALLY good, finally no more concentration on stereotypical/cliche characters. I’m seeing the Halo 4 Mountain Dew and Doritos on store shelves. I’m not sure what else needs to be done 2 weeks before release. I’m sure the Halo 4 coverage and advertising will only increase in the coming week. I’m not overwhelmed or underwhelmed, just in between. And considering we still have 2 weeks I’m confident Halo’s got itself covered lol.

Hey in Quebec we got a 5sec’ Halo 4 ads running on TV. It’s about the same length as any other Halo games have been in the past.

I don’t watch TV. I’m a little more comforted now.
But to be honest, I didn’t like the “Scanned” trailer very much. It didn’t seem like anything too special. (In particular I didn’t like the opening scene, with John as a young boy.)

I just think that it could be getting even more hype around it with a gameplay trailer, seeing how those get the most views (On Youtube) now, and actually show off the game.
But I do agree that FUD is getting amazing. Part 3 had my heart pumping, and it only makes me wonder how there isn’t already a movie or TV series.

Yeah its true. Halo 4 ads have been everywhere from tv and the internet since scanned trailer was released. Its only gonna become bigger over the next few weeks.

I think its a good way to win fans over who were unsure about 343 taking over
them showing off the game more than any halo ive ever seen makes me feel that they are confident in themselves.

It is underwhelming here in the Netherlands…because we don’t have a “tradition” of showing gametrailers or commercials on tv. H2’s commercial was shown, CoD is mostly on tv but always pushed by some other company and not by Activision, and the last one we had on the screens here was from Mists of Pandaria.

But when you look at the marketing campaign as a whole: its not underwhelming.
An entire mini series as marketing? What other big game has that?
Big budget trailers that now start to show up everywhere?
Almost weekly coverage on IGN and other big gaming sites?
Loads of commercials on Xbox dashboard?
Mountain Dew and Doritos?
and the list goes on.

No, it’s not as big as it was with H2 and definately H3. And that’s because it isn’t the cultural phenomenon it was back in those days.
Back then, Halo was what CoD is now. These days, Halo is on its way back to mainstream appeal, and that comes with more “problems” in advertisement as regular media aren’t that willing to cover games…unless they’re the biggest thing ever.

I’d like to now add that I think my initial view of it being underwhelming was due to how late the marketing push really started to pick up the pace.

Yeah the TV ads are shorter and I’ve definitely noticed them. While I agree the Scanned trailer isn’t the best trailer Halo has had, that’s a tough feat to accomplish considering the amazing previous Halo trailers, it definitely is a good trailer, IMO. I actually enjoyed the more in-depth approach towards John’s life, him as a child and waiting for augmentations were highlights to me. Gave me goosebumps b.c. I literally just finished re-reading that part in Fall of Reach when I saw it.

It does blow my mind that Halo hasn’t gotten the green-light for a movie. FuD is proving it can be done in the Halo universe and I could tell from the previous live-action trailers that it could definitely be a movie, IMO.

Halo 4 is also getting promoted on twitter!

I personally would like to see more H4 ad’s in places i go. I don’t watch TV either so I don’t see it on TV. And I have yet to see any on youtube (at work since at home I have ad block)

I think cortana flipping the hell out forlike a 5 second TV spot would really rake in the interest though.

“I HATE YOU!!!”
(everyone turns around like, what da fuuuuu?)
(Halo 4)

I still hold Halo 3 in the highest regard in terms of a building a great hype machine.

Halo 4 has felt a bit underwhelming compared to Reach.

Is anyone here from the UK and know if Scanned is being aired on TV? I’m currently at University and hardly watch live TV to notice.

Yeah, if you ask me, it’s dumb. Especially the fact that Halo 4 waited so close to launch to start marketing. No wonder it has less pre-orders than Reach.

It still has less Hype than Halo Reach. This is because Halo 4 started advertising so damn close to launch, while Reach didn’t wait for the very last minute to start advertising. Compare these two:

Halo 4 pre-orders 3 weeks before launch

Halo Reach pre-orders 3 weeks before launch

As you can see Reach was more hyped than Halo 4 is this year. Check out my post wich talks about this issue (keep in mind that my post was made before Halo 4’s advertising began.

I don’t watch TV! =/ So far I see nothing from Youtube though.

For what it’s worth the announcments at my school put up Halo 4 for a few minutes to talk about it.

Plus they aired the trailer during Walking Dead.

I’ve seen plenty. FUD has advertising as the top video recommendation after every video (strange, tho). I’ve seen my fair share of a short trailer at Target on the video game TVs. Not to mention the advertisement it got at E3. And, on top of all that, we have the GamerFuel Mountain Dew and Doritos, the Scanned Trailer, and I’ve seen another trailer on TV other than the Scanned trailer. I think it was a little gameplay trailer. Anyway, so far the marketing seems to be doing great with Halo 4 being just around the corner.

Compared to Halo 3 and Halo Reach, underwhelming. That’s strange because, if you consider FUD a marketing push, then Halo 4’s marketing scheme is by far the most expensive, but it just feels more underwhelming. The Scanned trailer was good, but not brilliant, and everything after Chief threw the grenade went downhill (and what happened to the music?!). I hear that there’s a 7 minute version coming out though, so maybe it gets better. FUD shows nothing about Halo 4, good as it may be. The Vidocs are interesting and stuff, but they don’t really work as trailers.

What we need is a proper game trailer. Like the fanmade MIA trailer - come on, 343, I’m sure you can do even better than that. While Black Ops 2 and other games release fast-paced gameplay trailers, 343 is still hanging around with very little in the way of trailers.

It was/is underwelming because “scanned” being released 3 weeks before the game drops was only the second actual trailer (not counting the Infinity being sucked into Requiem at E3) Since the announcement trailer at E3 2011. 343 has done a lot of fan service with the ViDocs and all of the detail they’re giving us, but in terms of marketing, I do think they focused on us too much instead of the general public.

> Is anyone here from the UK and know if Scanned is being aired on TV? I’m currently at University and hardly watch live TV to notice.

Well I watch alot of TV and i can tell everyone that here in the UK the Marketing has been zilch, nadda, eff all!!

Seems like they really are only looking out for gamers on the otherside of the pond!
