I personally like the coating system, seems fine to me, but I’m curious to what some other people think of it.

I think it is fine however we need to have coatings, armor, and weapon skins we can show off as status symbols for completing things like LASO, and other difficult content. All of the systems must have high quality coatings and not just the in-game shop and Battle Pass.

I like it. I think it has enormous potential… and from my point of view is a very benign revenue stream for 343.
But it is very contentious.
Check out some of the previous threads… there are some very passionate defenders of primary / secondary colour wheels. They are never very far from the top of the threads.
Although I think the Coating system works alright, im a little bummed by the execution of it. When they announced it, I was under the impression that you would be able to mix and match coatings like you can with Shaders in Destiny 2. Finding out that wasn’t the case made me wish it was even more lol.
However, on that note, I still can’t fully support it since they’re monetizing Coatings.
The system works, I have no real complaints, I just don’t like the monetization, but then again, I always have issues with monetization. 343 needs their revenue from the free game, I get that.
I just hope there’s a way to earn credits like in Reach in the full game if not the free multi-player side of it.
From how I see armor coatings is that personality will be striped away from your spartan where used to you could join a match with a very low likely hood of someone looking like you with the same paint but with coatings you might see a lobby full of Thanos purple Spartans. Personally I thank that coatings are just a step backwards and just there to be a way of 343 to make even more money off infinite.

I don’t like it, My colors ive chosen for my spartan have always been special to me .Im aware that it seems stupid as hell, but I’m sure there are some people who share the same feelings for the Halo coloring system. For me ive always used a cyan and white colors for my spartan .I remember why I picked these colors, a good friend of mine introduced me into the halo series not too long ago, he showed me all the secrets, button combos and tricks in the game. He wore the exact same cyan and white combination I use to this day. Whenever i see another player whos wearing similar or the same colors i grow a sort of bond with these people. The fact that we randomly queued in a match not knowing what to expect , you grow a mutual friendship of a sort.
I don’t think the coating system will impact this feeling in others because the coating isn’t yours .In the same way most people don’t feel this with their csgo skins whilst name tagged weapons do. There is simply no creativity in the coating system, there is no way to mix or match colors to your exact liking. I know this seems silly and inconsequential, but to some like myself it does matter.
I was against it at first, but honestly, I’ve been convinced by some to at least give them a chance. They can work well if done right, and I’m not even really sure myself what that would look like yet, but I’m going to refrain from judging until I’ve actually played the game, in this instance.
Too regressive. It was more like having a paintjob that was universal and THEN you could colorize it I wouldn’t be complaining. But now if you want the color-combo you have been rocking since Halo 2, you gotta get lucky or unlock it in a battle pass; and that is IF they even do your combo in the first place.
I don’t love it. I don’t even like it.
But there are aspects of it I do like.
So it’s… Give and take, I guess. I just want the freedom to dictate what colors from the skin go where. I’d be much cooler with that… or the ability to make my own, from what I’ve collected. That, I’d truly like, but fully understand why it isn’t a thing.
As much as I hate that.
An overall downgrade from the color system we had previously. And significantly worse than I was hoping for when they hyped up player expression. I was really hoping they would set a higher bar with spartan customization with things like tertiary colors, different patterns, Different textures etc. Instead we got a limited system that will almost certainly end up with many players never liking the way their spartan looks. Almost certainly because it is easier to monetize and gives them more things to put in a battlepass.
It’s not the most serious issue at the end of the day and I’ve gotten over it. But I would really prefer the old system back or a better one to replace it. As is it’s unlikely I’ll ever find a coating I like.

It won’t take long for the number of coatings to surpass the number of primary / secondary colour combinations.
Particularly if you consider that relatively few of the possible combinations were used. Pretty much everyone is a primary colour and black or white.
While you may see more than one purple spartan in your lobby… at least there is a good chance they will be sporting different types of purple coatings.
my thoughts are simple, no matter how much time they give it, how many coatings they add, how varied they are. it will always be inferior to a mixed system where you could choose the primary and secondary colors with the coating.
say in 10 years there are 4,000 coatings, not bad thats just barely beating out what halo 5 launched with. now imagine each of those 4,000 coatings let you pick from 60 primaries and 60 secondary’s, well now the game would have had (4,000*3,600=) 14,400,000 possible combinations.
We should be able to attach coatings to specific armor pieces. Adding armor coatings with primaries and secondaries to choose from is another good option to improve customizability. More customization is always better. People want to be unique we should be able to do that.
not that great but I can live with it
Honestly I’m fine as long as they double the amount of default unlocked color coatings. Something around what we had in 3/reach. Everything else is whatever. They’re going to need to monetize the game as this is a 10 year long project so coatings are the least offensive way they could do it imo.
The old color palette system only had so many combinations which were possible. I feel they will do coatings for all these combinations and as long as they do something similar to that I am happy. It depends on how extensive the combinations are.
It feels restrictive & takes that personalisation away from your Spartan but I’ll probably get used to it once I got the Coating I desire
I just hope they don’t lock basic color schemes behind a battlepass or paywall.
I like them, curious to see what comes in the future. Glad to finally see a forum post where the OP isn’t trashing it like it’s a spawn of hell.
Im very excited to see what it looks like when the game fully releases!
