Thoughts on New Waypoint?

It takes a little getting used to on mobile. Would have been nice to retain my forum rank and all. Kinda annoying that I have to start from scratch again.

In response to the low effort content comment I am probably guilty of this a lot of the time. Although the way I see it is just me jumping in on the discussion and trying to start a conversation while being brief. The only problem is not a lot of people respond to me to keep the discussion going. I usually only have a sentence or two to express my thoughts on a topic but there is usually too much thought that goes into it. In response to the comment about the discussion the monitor and admins want to foster I ask is the community factored in?

Don’t worry about it too much. A meaningful post doesn’t have to be super long. Sometimes all you can and need to say doesn’t take many words.

There are lots of good reasons someone’s posts may be short, and that’s fine. The most important thing is that you’re trying. That you post because you want to express something, and not because you feel the need to fill some daily quota, or because you’re ten posts from reaching the next rank.

Ultimately, we just want everyone to put their best effort into creating fun and interesting conversation. What that best effort means is different for every person.

Depends what you mean. There are obviously general things we’re not going to compromise on, like wanting people to be nice to each other. If somebody thinks they should be able to call someone stupid for their opinion, this community isn’t for them.

But beyond things we explicitly moderate, obviously what kind of threads and posts the community creates determines the rest. If people have a lot to say about sprint, then they’re going to talk a lot about sprint.

I was mainly asking abut the randomness of the community and the uncontrolled factor but it looks like you explained that.

Those are just Discourse’s badges, on by default.

They’re not terrible. A badge for flagging a post is a bit questionable, but it’s just one post, so it’s not that big of a deal. It’s probably intended along with the others to guide new users into the functionality of Discourse. If it was up to me, I’d probably seek to disable accumulation of badges that are based on the user’s own action, but that’s not in my power.

But the badges that are based on community response to the user’s posts (e.g., receiving likes) are actually kinda nice. They give the user a bit of a fun extrinsic reward for making something people like. They don’t reward spam because they’re not tied to the frequency of posts.

Overall I’m not too concerned about anything that isn’t tied to how much you do something. Just like badges can have the power to make people do dumb things, they can have the power to make people do nice things.

The visuals are a massive improvement. Although the app may need some adjusting, it’s nice to have an app that isn’t the Halo: Channel which hadn’t been touched in years.

I’m just hoping some of the legacy features from the old website make their return in the future. Profile banners, achievements and ranks are the most notable. It was nice to see how long/active a community member has been on forums just by seeing their rank on a post.

You have a profile photo in my view. For me, mine is just a big letter D that cannot be changed.

You might be able to change it on the Xbox app on the phone if you register your account with Xboxcom. The current profile pic is linked to gamertags so people that are on the PC might have no gamertag related to the waypoint profile.

I changed mine on Xbox/the Xbox companion app on PC and it changed it here. But I would prefer being able to on Waypoint, rather than having to do that. And for a while, I had my old picture on the Forum section of Waypoint, whereas I had this one for the rest of Waypoint. Glad it finally updated.

Gotta be honest, while it looks fresh, and I’m interested to see it continue to develop, there are some pretty big personal concerns. I can’t find my achievements list anywhere. It’s not on my service record anymore, so I can’t track what achievements I need for MCC without slogging through the MCC menu.

Just noticed you can see when people typing at the bottom via a little pfp followed by replying neat will edit and attach a picture if I remember if and when I get picture attachment access to show what I mean

If your just looking to track achievements you could try TrueAchievementscom and see if they have the stats your looking for. On TA you can sort achievements by won or not won so you don’t have to go through most of the list.

which is fair, assuming it’s accurate to my own profile, which TA has been a bit lacking of in the past. But that doesn’t discard the fact that this IS a step backwards for the waypoint site. I shouldn’t have to go to a third party to look up achievements that, up until last week, I was able to utilize perfectly fine on the service record.

I like it so far! I’m going to miss Spartan Companies however.

Not a fan of the badge for flagging either. An issue with this is that, like the other badges, you can see who has been awarded the badge. There were 38 users when I just looked. Probably not an issue over time if the numbers are large, but could be a bit of work monitoring aggrieved users who’ve had their post flagged. Guess it would have been removed if this was a problem on other forums that use Discourse.

I mean, I don’t see an issue, because all you can see is that someone has flagged a post. Can’t know which post, when, or whether it led to any action. Over time you’d expect any user who has spent any time on the forums to have flagged a post at some point.

its probably the best iteration of this website. The dark theme suits it and the blue and font is pretty consistent. Love it!

I just use the console apps on mobile for that followed by going to those sites to look at the secret trophies/achievements
