I was just wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on Halo’s new primary character. Personally, I really like him. The whole former ONI assassin turned Spartan thing is really interesting to me! Chief has always been the hero, but this new character has a much darker past, and therefore a lot more potential as a character. I know that Locke hardly compares to the awesomeness of the Halo 5 Chief, but compared to the bland, empty slate Chief of Combat Evolved, I would say he’s off to a much better start. 343i can’t do much with the Chief without angering fans. He was always just meant to be an empty soldier that players could easily insert themselves into. Locke actually has the chance to grow and evolve as a character, which is something I’m really looking forward to. Any thoughts?
I like Locke but I disagree when u say 343 can’t do much with chief. When you think about it, do we even know him? Aside from kicking alien -Yoink- and really caring for his friends, who the hell is John?
#huntthe- Nah nevermind
I’m kinda on the fence about him. For the amount of missions we had for him in H5, he didn’t really seem to grab my attention. He was just sort of there. Hopefully 343 fleshes him out in H6.

That’s a good point. It would be nice to see Chief actually explore his own humanity. Maybe in the future games, we can see more of an even split between the two and get the chance to see both of them evolve and develop into truly badass, fully fletched out character!

Another stupid empty thing people on these forums keep repeating back to one another. Do you guys think if you repeat it enough times it becomes true and not your opinion?
Yes, I do think 343i has a better chance to develop Locke as new fresh out protag. Still wish H5 is still more about Chief and Blue team. 4-6 should still be mainly about Chief and after that they can start a new saga with Locke.
That said, they made him pretty bland this time around which make lack of Chief stings even more.
I don’t like locke much, his back story isn’t that interesting and nightfall was meh. His representation in halo 5 was very bad, he’s basically halo ce and 2 master chief with a face which I didn’t want, I though after halo 4 we wouldn’t get those “blank” characters anymore. oh BOY was I wrong.

I don’t know what the other posters are thinking, but this actually is my opinion. Bungie certainly never even tried to humanize Chief, and when 343i tried in Halo 4, it became on of the most hated campaigns in Halo history. So I definitely think that 343i has learned the lesson that they shouldn’t try to humanize Chief too much. Although, I do respect your opinion. Disagreement is always bound to happen.

I personally thought they did fine in Halo 4. I thought many people considered Halo 4 campaign to be great.
Anyways, I saw someone mentioned before that they can make it like Reach campaign. I think may be it might be nice if you play YOUR Spartan alongside Locke and Chief. It would be epic I think.
Master Chief > Locke but that’s just my personal opinion.
While I agree that Chief is a fairly bland character overall, 343 somehow managed to make Locke even more bland and boring. Seriously, I don’t think Locke ever expressed a single emotion or opinion the whole game. He didn’t even get the bad–Yoink- or humorous lines that Chief/Arbiter would get in previous games. At least Chief had some poignant moments at the end of Halo 2 and during Halo 3, and Halo 4 actually gave him some depth. Locke never gets any development or any memorable dialog through the whole game despite being the main character.
His back story is also not all that interesting, at least in comparison to Chief and Arbiter. Really, “I used to be an ONI hit man” vs. “I was abducted at the age of 5 by the government, trained my entire life and fought in the Great War for 30 years, saving the galaxy numerous times, to become the greatest soldier humanity had ever seen” and “I was the leader of a Covenant Fleet that let Halo be destroyed, so I was branded as a pariah and made a sacrificial idol that went on to lead a civil war, which I then won and now rule a planet”.
To be honest, the whole inclusion of Locke was pointless. He is essentially another boring spartan not that different from Chief, all he does is follow the path Chief already tred, and the two had the same goal. So why didn’t we just play as Chief? The only regret I would have about cutting Locke out of the story would be we would get less Buck.
Locke could have used a bit more character in the game but he wasn’t as bad and flat as people say.
I don’t know why people bash reaches story. I don’t like the multiplayer but the campaign was good.
I think there should have been an ending where if you survive the final battle for so long on legendary you see noble 6 survive
I just didn’t connect with Locke at all.

For me Reach was disappointing becomes Noble Team seemed like emotionless, flat characters. When they each died I didn’t feel sad, I just shrugged my shoulders and thought nothing of it. Johnsons death in Halo 3 had a huge impact because of his development as a character so that’s what I was looking for in Noble Team.
Also for the fact that there wasn’t a single level that the team played as a squad. Carter told me not to lone wolf anything but half the levels either just involved myself or one other teammate.

People hate the story because it contradicts the Fall of Reach book. I liked Reach’s story, but after reading the FoR, I was left confused.
I like locke
I liked him! Can’t wait to see how evolves

I personally prefer the book version than the game version so I agree with you
