Thoughts on Halo

I’ve been playing Halo since I was a kid. I’m 27 now so I’ve literally grown up with the franchise. To me Halo ended with Halo 3. The idea of Chief and Cortana dying together for humanity was how it should have ended. That being said I thought the H4 story was ok and maybe it can be interesting, but lets be real Bungie is Halo and everything after H3 I feel they were forced to do. I honestly think Reach was never meant to be a Halo game. I bet Reach was development for Destiny that was converted to Halo for money, but that’s neither here nor there because 343 runs the show now and more importantly I didn’t play that game because I was busy with college and I heard it sucked anyway. Moving forward. I don’t hate what 343 has done to Halo because I can tell that they’re really trying to make something worth playing, but it’s hard to fix something so broken. Now when I say the game is broken I’m not referring to the single player campaign. Although, I did feel part of the charm of Halo was the funny one liners from Johnson, grunts and brutes and that’s not as present in this game, but whatevs (refer to sentence 3) I’m obviously talking about the multiplayer. The multiplayer needs to be what carries this franchise. It always has and now it’s falling apart because of it.

I say these things because I care <3

We’ll start with the simple things I guess.
1.Press select stop moving??? Why?

2.1, 2, 3, 4 done. Everyone gets it. What is the 10, 20, 30, 40 nonsense?

3.What is with the shark vs. manta ray thing?

4.Why’s there so much music all the time?! Even good songs become annoying after a while…think about it……….

5.No loadouts or “specializations”. You know what makes me feel unique and special?

6.RANKS!! Where’s my Rank?!

7.No instant respawn. When someone is dead shouldn’t they, you know, be dead for a bit?

8.No kill cam again I think H3 did it fine. The H4 kill cam is laggy half the time anyway.

9.No ordinance. Just no. Again, just listen to Daddy Bungie and spread out the power weapons on the map.

10.Where are the good creative maps? I can’t think of a H4 map that’s as creative as Narrows, Construct, Guardian, Pit ect. The only map that plays well is Haven, but that’s not terribly creative. Everything else is a collection of corridors, forests, streets with ramps and boxes and it doesn’t feel like Halo to me. The community maps are making good use of the game, but for the purpose of evaluating what 343 has done we really can’t consider those maps. The new maps look good, but it’s all just ramps and boxes and corridors. I really don’t consider that to be a creative map. Think of Citadel, Cold Storage or Epitaph they aren’t without their flaws but at least those maps were creative which in turn made for creative gameplay.

11.The guns in H4 suck and when I say they suck I mean they’re too good. DMR is overpowered, the aim assist is helping too much, hit boxes are huge and sniping/railgunning is a breeze. This does not separate the boys from the men. Also, personally I don’t like the sound of the H4 BR in comparison with H2 & H3, it actually annoys me.

12.Don’t start games with armor abilities. The game would play better if armor abilities were picked up in the same manner as H3 (you know just walk over it). Which means THEY MUST BALANCE THE ARMOR ABILITIES. In my fantasy world the H3 invisibility, overshield, regen, bubble shield (H3), jet pack, hologram and thruster pack can coexist on a map as armor abilities that are picked up. However, thruster pack should be upgraded to be slightly more useful. Maybe extend the thrust and allow for some better maneuvering capability as you’re thrusting.

*All the other armor abilities are overpowered. Also, Hardlight shield is a nice idea but it should be replaced with the bubble shield. The bubble shield makes for interesting close encounters in areas where there otherwise wouldn’t be and it actually provides real cover.

13.Speaking of close encounters, where’s the lunge when I melee?

14.No sprint. It doesn’t do anything for the game. It sounds like a good idea, but the compensating factors i.e. aim assist and more precise guns turn the game into a long distance shooter which actually makes the game less dynamic.

I write all this because it’s my message in a bottle. Maybe someone at 343 will read this…

You’re clearly an old school fan like myself. I was a little surprised to see halo 4 turn out the way it did. I was hoping they would abandon the Reach style and bring back the old school Halo “roots” that they said was gonna happen. There is no way H5 is going to abandon what they did with H4. I’m proudly sticking with H3 til something else is made and worthy of my time and $$.

> The idea of Chief and Cortana dying together for humanity was how it should have ended.

Just pointing it out, it was Bungie who decided they’d end the game with FuD floating towards Requiem. Them dying was never part of the plan.

I myself just wrote a similar long winded rant. I entirely agree with everyone of your points. It’s really sad to see a once great franchise degrade into what it has become.

Chances are if you didn’t think the Campaign was good, then you haven’t been very involved with the Halo Universe.

I honestly think sprint should be in this game, it just feels natural.

they can’t take out everything in halo 4 to make it like the previous titles, but they can at least make a classic playlist for everything. I would honestly be fine with infinity slayer if all the weapons were balanced, had static weapon spawns and no POD.

for the campaign, they just need to make more epic encounters. Like in halo 3 the mission “Covenant” at the end there is two scarabs and you can fly on top of them with the hornet and blow it up, move on to the next one and watch them explode. That was awesome.

the memories…

I grew up with Halo as well, but I feel completely different than you. I’m 26 now, and I loved Reach, and H4 is my favorite Halo other than CE. However nothing can beat CE lan parties. Anyway I love what Reach did for Halo. It made it more dynamic and less of a one gun Br-fest that was H3. All in all I would say H3 was my least favorite Halo game. I hated the CSR because all it did was create booster and Epenis measures, I hated the br with a passion. That being said I was pretty good at H3, but I just didn’t care for it as much as CE, or H2. Now though I love H4.

  1. Why do power weapons disappear so quickly off the map?

@Bionic Cell

situation:

you shoot someone a few times, they’re weak, you chase, they run.

In past Halo games if you were screwed you either made a play, hit em with a juke or died. In H4 you either make a play or run! I think we all can agree that the guns in H4 are the most accurate and precise guns out of any of the Halo games. I understand that if everyone has sprint the game must compensate for this by giving everyone more accurate guns so that killing someone isn’t an annoying chore, but what this also does is make it possible to kill someone from across the map, which makes dying out of nowhere a common occurrence in this game. Not good.

Sprint doesn’t improve gameplay. While it may seem as though sprint helps in closing the gap between players it actually doesn’t because everyone has it. When you chase your enemy is usually running as well and what you’re doing by chasing is putting yourself in a bad position on the map and most likely you’ll end up dying. That’s why most people wise up and stop chasing, but that turns the game into a campy long distance shooter that frankly isn’t fun.

Just thought of this had to write it down.

In my fantasy world maybe the jet pack, hologram, and thruster pack can be picked up and used for only a finite amount of time once picked up OR have “armor ammo” that allows you to use the armor ability a finite number of times. Also, maybe have the respawn times of the armor abilities on the map more often than power weapons. This maybe will keep the game dynamic and also lessen the chaos associated with armor abilities.

You probably know this already, the map design itself, wouldnt have been as bad in my opinion if sprint, armor abilities and the DMR didnt exist, 343 lust over the DMR, they WANT that weapon to be the standard spawn weapon. Every map has been designed with loads of far away long range encounters in mind to support how the DMR plays (which doesnt play like Halo may i add).

What im saying is, every poor desicison this game has made has resulted with even more poor decisions and areas of design.

Theres two types of arguments, bad ones, and good ones, in bad arguments, people use personal preference and no real evidence “I honestly think sprint should be in this game, it just feels natural.” So sprint should be in the game because it feels natural to you regardless of how much it affects the gameplay, good argument sir well done.

Theres sarcasm in there btw, just incase you didnt pick it up

meh…

I agree with everything you said, spot on.

@JediMaster97

Gottcha…

(turns slowly to trufflepigg)

Thanks man

16.On my spinning circle…wtf??

I think sprint should remain in BTB, but be removed from most of the playlists that use smaller maps.

I feel that if they fix the dmr they fix halo. its too good it ruins everything

@Larry Tanng

That’s not a bad idea. It would also help if they:

  1. made it so you don’t start with plasma pistols
  2. Beefed up the vehicles
  3. ditched the DMR and the Guass Hog
  4. and made it so I don’t hafta play Ragnarock or Exile every time.

always baffled by the general idiocy and backward thinking on this forum… at times, in regards to certain members who I’ll get warned for calling out, so I won’t :expressionless:

But to keep this post relevant, my response is this: complain too much, do too little, have unrealistic expectations, don’t understand the concept of meta or sandbox. Not that all the suggestions listed are poor, but that they shouldn’t all coexist. The game needs to make what it has work too.

For me the best part of Halo has always been the campaign, with the exceptions of ODST and Wars, and the Master Chief and Cortana dying was never part of the plan developed by Bungie, so by your logic Halo ended with Halo 2. And Reach has always been a Halo game throughout the development stages. It was Bungie’s farewell to the Halo universe and its fans, so they just went all out and did what they could.
