Thoughts on Halo 5's Story and the Future

I was scrolling through the Halo 5 achievements list when I noticed this image. I was immediately reminded of how Halo 5’s story was initially presented with all of the trailers, advertisements, avatar items, and the Hunt the Truth audio series. I can’t help but wonder – what the heck happened? Not to beat a dead horse; the fact that we were mislead by Microsoft’s advertising is old news. It just amazes me how much the direction of the story changed between E3 2014 and launch. The “lone-wolf” Master Chief facade seemed so much more interesting and mysterious than what got.

“Oh hey, Cortana is actually alive and now she wants to rule the galaxy. That extremely emotional ending in Halo 4 in which John’s humanity is shown through his grief over the death of Cortana was just us pulling your leg! We can’t believe you all actually believed the whole rampancy thing.” - Obviously not the real 343

I mean seriously? Even I could have come up with a better plot than that.

I guess my point is: how can we know if what 343 shows us (story-wise) about Halo 6 is accurate or misleading?

Do you think 343 / Microsoft learned from their mistakes regarding Halo 5’s campaign, and do you trust them to do a better job with Halo 6? Personally, I don’t think I’ll pre-order the next Halo game no matter how shiny the limited edition steel case is. However, despite all of this, I do think 343 is going to do a much better job on the next installment.

Did 343 learn from their mistakes? Probably. They seem to have a lot of people with good intentions (albeit a bit ignorant of certain requests.)
Did Microsoft learn from their mistakes? Hell no.

Which achievement gets you that image? Its pretty awesome.

I often wonder how 343 plans to repair the story after Halo 5 and this seems like a step in the right direction. Thanks for sharing!

I though the story overall was ok, not great. I do agree that the marketing bait and switch was lame though

The story in Halo 5 was awful on so many levels. The general plot was uninspiring and unoriginal. The writing was absolutely horrid. Some events were ridiculously bad (killing off Jul in a cutscene to make Locke look like a badass). The story is at a point where I am now completely unengaged. Cortana and her “Created” were such a terrible antagonist that I just… Don’t care anymore. Of all the plot threads that they could follow with the franchise, why pick AI uprising + evil undead companion? Not only is it so terribly cliché, it also goes against everything that’s happened so far and doesn’t feel at place in the Halo universe. There has never been any sort of build up to this idea. And what happened to the Didact? Why can’t he continue to be the villain, as was promised?

I fail to see how they can redeem the story into something that will make me as interested as I was before Halo 5 came out.

Screw the MasterChief in the picture, look at this mining machine.
What is that,it look like a truck and a chainsaw spent an night togher.

as terrible and misleading the campaign was, I actually see some potential in this story arc and if 343 plays their cards right then this can turn out to be a really interesting story arc.
