Thoughts on Free For All?

I’m not sure why, but I find FFA a lot less enjoyable in Halo 5. It’s not Halo 5 itself, I think the gameplay is some of the best I’ve played in years. But it’s almost as though it doesn’t suit Free For All on standard Slayer maps any more. I think because of the Spartan Abilities further increasing the mobility in an already fast-paced game, FFA has become far more luck-based than it was before, and there was always a strong degree of luck.

I just find myself (and other FFA players I’ve talked to) being frustrated with the game mode, rather than actually enjoying it. I don’t know, maybe it needs bigger maps? I’m a big FFA player on every game I play, but it’s only Halo 5’s that I find not fun to play.

It’s the best FFA we have had since H3 IMO. There is actually a lot of skill involved especially once you reach onyx. I love H5 FFA. Sure it’s not perfect but it’s extremely competitive. I would like to see more map diversity not necessarily bigger maps. Take out over growth and replace it with battle Creek(take away CE pistol starts). Take out stasis and put torque back in. Stuff like that

It’s ok. I used to play it but I don’t know what made me stop playing. It’s can be enjoyable at times but I tend to lose my marbles when I play lol

FFA in h5 is awful. Reducing team sizes still doesn’t fix the issue of crowded maps, bad spawns, and constant fighting with few 1v1 occurances, to clarify constant fighting isn’t the issue, it’s how little you get 1v1 engagements or finish a kill only to be greeted by another player when you’re still hurt from the previous engagement.

i can’t stand h5 FFA without getting pissed, haven’t touched it in months

I think it’s alright. I don’t play much FFA myself - I prefer Warzone, BTB and (recently) Covenant slayer.

Matchmaking needs Jesus. I just ranked silver the other day, this morning I find myself up against plat & diamonds . . . yeah . . .

Not a fan. It seems like matches last 4ever!!

I can’t stand Halo 5’s FFA.

It needs 8 players. Remove the pistol from the secondary start.

It’s nothing but pistol gameplay. There’s nothing different about it every time I play it. It’s always pistols.

The maps need more variety of weapons on them.

Just curious… in your version would it be AR starts only?

Eight players FFA was complete toilet. Best thing they ever did with FFA was make it six players. Maps are way to small for eight.

I like it, but its one of the most stressful playlists in my opinion so I don’t play it very often

I played one game of FFA ever in H5, won it and did very well. This was months, maybe even a year ago.

I am having major FFA withdrawals right now. Haven’t even had a chance to rank in it yet this season. Been to busy with work and vacation.

Free For All was my favorite playlist in previous Halo games. I got to Rank 45 in Halo 3’s Lone Wolves, although Rumble Pit was a lot more fun in Halo 3, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4.

But In Halo 5, Free For All just doesn’t play well with the new gameplay mechanics and maps. The maps feel too small even for 6-player FFA, and the problems that plague the rest of the game- Spartan Charge, and the nerfed motion tracker range- are more damaging to the experience than in any other playlist. I was able to keep a k/d north of 1.7 in Halo 3 and Halo: Reach when I played mostly Rumble Pit… but in this game, by k/d is stuck at 1.0.

I swear, it feels like I’m being punished for every kill I get… any time I’m lucky enough to get a kill, I either get Spartan Charged from behind, or someone starts shooting at me from outside motion tracker range.

The problem is primarily the motion tracker. Before, if someone started shooting at me from outside my field of view, I would look at the motion tracker to see where they were, and then I could find a quick escape route that would take me around the other players and give me a chance to recharge my shields. Halo 5 doesn’t have that; because the motion tracker range is handicapped at 18m, if I try to run away, half the time I end up running straight towards the player’s who’s shooting at me, and the other half I run into somebody else blocking my escape route. It’s incredibly frustrating. More so than Infinity Rumble ever was. I’d take ordnance and custom loadouts over running around like a headless chicken any day of the week.

For Halo 5’s FFA to be as good as previous games, it needs an increase to motion tracker range; 25 meters, and NOT like the Proving Grounds playlist where it can’t detect players who are walking… that won’t fix anything. Just increase the range. It also needs it’s own special selection of Forge maps like Big Team Battle, specifically made for FFA; remakes of classic Rumble Pit maps like Blackout, Guardian, Ivory Tower, Countdown, Sanctuary, Tombstone, are just a few good maps they should bring back. We also need a Social FFA playlist.

I also think Spartan Charge should be disabled in FFA. It’s overpowered as it is, but even more so in an FFA environment where you have no teammates to watch your back.

Yeah I wouldn’t mind seeing Spartan charge removed from all ranked play or at least make it so you can’t charge while being shot.

While I love to wreak havoc among other people in short order, Halo 5’s FFA is a bit rage-inducing for me. I was lucky enough to reach a high-Platinum / low-Diamond this one time.

343 Industries reduced the maximum player count in 343 to avoid making instant deaths in FFA and slow down the game a bit.

As I myself isn’t a FFA player, I have not much to say about the balance, gameplay ect.

i used to play FFA a lot when H5 launched, however I never go on it. If there was a free for all swat though I might be tempted.

So many times I’ll have top 3 damage and end up in last place or close to it… lots of garbage in H5 FFA.

I’ve gotten to the point that I just don’t take it seriously anymore, that’s how to keep it fun, just go in knowing you’re trying your luck.

I tend to do so much better in that mode the less I care.
