I recently read a thread on a proposed Halo card game another forum user pitched and that made me want to make a more general thread about more ideas for traditional style games.
Halo is very much based around war. From large scale engagements to cramped squad combat. You know what else is an IP about war and does much the same? Warhammer 40k. But Games Workshop absolutely mishandles that IP and wonders why people hate them. A shadow of their former selves. They both also share a track record of good, iconic writing with memorable characters that can be referred to throughout the games rules. Long story short I think Halo would do really really well with having a tabletop game as part of its repertoire. I’m talking miniatures and statlines and special named characters and the ability to make your own HQ units and the whole nine yards. We’ve got enough factions too, UNSC would operate much like your standard Space Marines/Imperial Guard, Covenant much the same if not a little more Eldar-like, Flood operate like Orks in the sense that they’re inaccurate but you can field 3x the amount of units and swamp the battlefield.
Cool stuff like,
“I need a weapon.”
Before the player’s shooting phase Master Chief can choose to pick up a recently deceased enemy’s weapon. This replaces the units current primary weapon.
And
“You had something they didn’t”
Master Chief can reroll saves to negate death.
Also
“This Ring will make us brothers”
Flood units share a collective consciousness and thus all units within X area have squadsight.
So on and so on, I just think this would be such a good idea if implemented and marketed properly.
Bungie tried it once I think and it flopped but I fully blame that on the fact that it was more marketed as a funny little side attraction. A novelty at best. Much like the megabloks, though in recent days that’s gotten much better too. Regardless, it didn’t have enough backing.
What other endeavors would you like to see in the future?
