Recently, some people have been thinking or hearing that Halo Infinite could be free to play, even though not confirmed. But, with no news about it recently, it very well could be to an extent. Having a F2P game would attract a lot of people, but the trade off of being F2P would be microtransactions. Personally, I don’t want a F2P game that will be filled with MTs. The MTs have a chance of locking items that should be earnable in game, and also making the game feel like a cash grab. Sure a paid game could do this too, but we already know that heavy MTs in a paid game does not go too well. Also with F2P, there is the possibility of a battlepass, which I would rather leave out. BPs also lock out items that should already be in game, unless it is F2P.
If 343 gave out a F2P multiplayer, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to lock free players out of items through MTs, but give access to the items for full game buyers.
Imo, if they use the special credits MTs (COD points, destiny silver, etc), that’s already just a let down to me. Those also feel like a cheap cash grab. I would rather actually play the game to earn something rather than boost my player by spending an extra $50.
What are your thoughts on Infinite F2P and the MTs?
Halo Infinite being free to play would break tradition but we are given the belief that the game is going to be massive and a little more ambitious compared to previous titles so anything is pretty much up in there air at this point. I would be shocked but I would accept it.
Microsoft’s main focus is Xbox game pass- which has all first party titles at launch. I don’t see them making Halo Infinite, a very good reason to get game pass, F2P as it would make 0 sense given their current business model.
I’m anticipating a free to play mode to be honest. Some sort of massive player mode taking place on Zeta Halo with all the weapons, vehicles, equipment, abilites etc. included in the sandbox.
As for microtransactions, I would expect them tied to the above-mentioned mode, but alternatively purchasable items can be unlocked for free during campaign and traditional multiplayer progress.

I would actually say (surprisingly) that CoD: Modern Warfare did it best. No egregious implementation, you can earn pretty much everything through normal gameplay, no supply drops, and you can buy certain weapon blueprints with CoD points (indirectly with real money) but in order to unlock other things for that weapon, you still need to play the game just like everyone else.
Also, regardless of the game being F2P or not, Infinite is gonna have MTs anyways. The only thing I want from 343 is to not use an RnG-based system to unlock gameplay-changing items that affect 1/3rd of the entire multiplayer section for the game (cough cough Guardians)
I think it will be used as a Game Pass magnet to drive subs. Depending the type of game it ends up being, could be either good or bad. There is a lot riding on this, so hopefully it sticks a good landing and keeps interest as added features are added… provided is that type of game
If it meant a bigger player base in the short and long term I’d be down with F2P model, especially since you know it’ll have MTX anyway even if it’s full price.

I mean yeah it would be different, maybe some MTs (which I really hope do not affect gameplay or progression), but then again it would be a hopefully good Halo game, and I wouldn’t be spending on the base game. The only time I would ever buy MTs is if the game is good and I can tell the developers didn’t make it more of a cash grab (Titanfall 2 imo)

Never thought of that… but everything you just said makes sense

This. I’m almost 100% sure MTX will be in the game but I’m hoping it’s not invasive. I want all armor/customization options to be locked behind certain challenges/lvl ranks. With that in mind, not sure what they’ll make available to buy using MTX.
They spent 5 years developing this game. It has to pay off.
Halo can pull players into the gamepass system ($5-$15/month), and it could help them sell their new console. These two things, i think, will be enough to keep MTX out of Halo Infinite… For about six months.
After they build a massive playerbase (on a hopefully feature-complete game), it’ll be too hard to resist milking that voluptuous cash cow. I anticipate a rotating/time-limited shop like CODMW and Fortnite. I fear pizza skins.
Mini rant: it pains me to think a Spartan in the UNSC military was like “lol my guns a pizza.” Are you kidding me?!? 343i, please don’t add troll skins to Halo Infinite. I don’t care if you think zoomers will get a kick out of it (and probably buy it).
