Thoughts On A Custom Game Browser

So there’s a lot of buzz around the interwebs recently about a Custom Game Browser being added to Halo 5, lots of people in the community would love to see this happen; especially given the fact that Forge in Halo 5 is such a powerful tool. Many players would like to get more involved in Custom Games, but can’t due to many factors. It really isn’t that easy for players to quickly jump in and out of Custom Games, unless you have a friends list full of willing players, and if you do you’re lucky!

Forge minigames and custom maps have been getting a lot of attention lately, and rightfully so, but I often see people in threads where these minigames/maps are posted asking how they can get into Custom Games to try them out. The same old answers are always posted, guiding people to recruitment forums or websites where it takes a few days to get people added, and then they’ll play a few games and someone will have to leave or whatever and the session is over. Its a pretty big hassle to get a decent Custom Game session going unless you have dependable friends who’re down to play. Imagine if instead of all that all a player had to do was press A on the Custom Game tab, scroll over to a Custom Game Browser tab, press A again, and be able to see a list of games that are being hosted!

I’m sure Forgers would also like to see a Custom Game Browser added so they could more easily test and share their creations with the community. Right now if you don’t have a bunch of friends that can help you test your map, then you’re stuck with a few weekly options from different communities around the net, and if you can’t get into one of those games then you’re out of luck. With a Custom Game Browser it’d be as easy as hosting a lobby and waiting for people to join, or maybe joining a lobby and trying to get your map into the rotation.

Halo 5’s REQ system would work very well with a Custom Game Browser, as I’m sure 343i would be worried about population issues with Matchmaking if such a system were implemented, but Custom Games don’t reward Xp, RP, or count towards commendations (Achillies). Players would have to play Matchmaking if they want to progress their accounts at all, or if they wanted to play ranked games. Custom Games are strictly for fun only, so they wouldn’t siphon off all of the matchmaking players.

What do you guys think about the addition of a Custom Game Browser being added to Halo 5?

Been asking for a custom game browser for along time. I’m sure many have. I’d love to see it in Halo 5 for both Xbox One and when the Windows 10 comes out since it’s just forge/customs.

I vote yes!

Custom games are some of the most unique parts of the Halo series, yet most will never enjoy them. Custom game lobby search is a must.

I grew up playing halo ce on the pc(it had a custom game browser)I would love that!!I would go -Yoink- if it was added.

Yeah definitely. It would be cool if you could list your game with a title, player count/player max, and what gamemode your playing on what map. I know this would take a lot of UI work but it would make Halo 5 so much more appealing because of those moments where you don’t have any friends online and you want to play customs. Also uf this were to be a thing I would want a gamemode/map filter so you could choose the map or gamemode that you want and find lots of lobbies playing those.

I also would be in favor of a customs browser of some sort. I don’t do many customs, but I’m curious about some of the maps being created and am more willing to do customs now.

Well we absolutely need one. It’s unlimited free content.

Agreed we definitely need a file browser of some sorts for Halo 5.

Would love this feature in Halo 5. It works so well in Battlefield, so why Microsoft and 343 don’t develop something like that? Especially with 5’s forge being amazing, and seeing people’s creations and gather 15 people to play them is such a pain in the -Yoink-.

I VOTE YES.

Should have the option to name your lobbies as well. So people have some kind of indication of what kind of gametypes you’re running.

Yunno, customs wouldn’t even be in such bad shape if they didn’t remove open privacy from customs…

Threads like these need to gain more attention if this is ever to be implemented

A custom games browser would help this community in so many different ways and must be added for the longevity of this franchise.

Yup, totally agree. When will we ever get a Community Forge Map Playlist for Arena? We got one for Halo 4, why not for Halo 5?

People have been asking for this for a long time, but I think that 343i worries that if they implement it, Matchmaking’s population would get even smaller.

That may be true… but the games overall population may be larger than what it is now IF it were here…

I find games quickly. Not sure why everyone is convinced halo 5 is on it’s last legs. Custom games matchmaking would be awesome.

I get that fear, but I think that H5 is the game to implement this in. The REQ system makes it such that players are heavily encouraged to play matchmaking, and with the number of players that a feature like this could bring in and retain I think it’d be worth it. Also, players who spend a lot of time playing custom games would probably be more likely to spend cash on REQ packs because they won’t be earning them through gameplay.

I think its a win/win!

Better yet, choose it from an existing set of categories, such as Competitive, Infection, Casual, Race, Minigame, Variety. It should also provide a player count and stuff.

There are a few missing features that make hosting a real chore though, and those should be addressed before a browser should be considered.
