Thoughts after playing the pre Beta

This may not be very organized…sorry.
Spartan abilities:
While ground pound seems like it should be in a super smash bros game, it does come in handy… sorta. I played pretty much the whole weekend and I got maybe 2 kills with it, out of maybe 20 games. I wasn’t killed by it once. I think myself and those I was playing with it were just too focused on playing regular halo that no one really tried to use the dumb thing. I did use the animation to avoid grenade. You can jump up and initiate ground pound to stay in the air and avoid some of the splash damage.

Sprint-
sprint is sprint, I don’t hate it but I don’t like it. It always made me question myself after winning a challenge as “I can’t recharge while running” If I did, 80% of the time I was found and killed. So it seems pretty balanced.

spartan charge-
Used it to just see the animation but never thought to use it in battle. I’m a BR guy and so if someone gets that close to me, shame on me. You can only initiate it at top sprint speed which happens about 1-1.5 seconds after you start running.

Thrusters-
super easy to avoid grenades. They need to fine tune that somehow.

Clamber-
Cool, Ill have to play more games to really see how I feel about it.

Slide-
I didn’t slide a single time. Not sure I even knew how to do it. lol

Weapons:

AR-
Too good. Close range is extremely deadly and pretty good at medium range. Clip size is pretty good, can’t remember the number. Smart scope makes it on par with the BR.

SMG -
Insane at close range. Not so great at medium as the recoil will throw you off.

BR-
Seems balanced? Its certainly not king of weapons at this point in the Beta. I think the scope looks ugly. Despite it not being the king, I still only used it.

DMR-
Didn’t use it too much as I didn’t know where it spawned. (beta was AR starts). When i did pick it up, the zoom was too much IMO. Kills pretty quickly. Definitely for more long range encounters as it should be.

Pistol-
If you take your time and have good aim, you can do pretty well with it. Cant remember the number of shots for a kill.

Sniper -
Pretty much the same sniper as halo 4. The scope screen is terrible and ugly.

Energy sword -
Aesthetically looks bad and awkward. Lunge felt slower than previous games. Cant get a one hit kill with regular melee. Maybe that was just a glitch.

Misc:
Announcer -
Annoying as fuuuuu. Everytime you get a 4shot he goes “Perfect Kill”. 5 medals a kill…Really? worse than halo 4.
When the match starts “Control power weapons to dominate the enemy team” please stop…

Spartan callouts - why?
Power weapons in 30 seconds
Sniper rifle in 30 seconds
Power weapons are up
Sniper rifle is up
Sniper rifle picked up

Okay… I get it!

Arena Ranks-
7 Ranks with 3 tiers each.

Got up to Onyx III. The next was “Semi Pro” with “Pro” being the top rank. Really? “Guys I’m semi pro” Smh.
You get performance points after each game depending on how you play. Before you can even get a rank, you must complete 10 games. On average I went around 18 kills 3-4 deaths and I gained about 13-15 performance points a match. Got half way to “semi-pro”.

Conclusion:
Despite all the new changes, I pretty much ignored them. I sprinted and used the thruster pack. My mind was fixed too much on old school halo that I didn’t care to really try to clamber a lot or ground pound or shoulder charge. When I would see others using it, it would just make me laugh as they would either get shot in the sky charging the pound or gunned down by an AR(shoulder charge). I wish we could get 1-50 ranks for this game. It seems like a good game overall. Weapon tweaks and ability tweaks and it should be pretty fun. Also, finding a match in the beta was about the same as finding a match in MCC at this moment. I had to force quit the game a few times but no where near as much as I had to in MCC.

Some good observations I mostly agree with. I tried the charge a few times and managed to get a couple kills, but it’s not super helpful at all. Same for the ground-pound. Sliding = meh. Might be good to throw off a foe’s aim, but I never thought to try it in the moment. I love clamber.

I don’t have an issue with Spartan chatter, or the announcer (or medals, for that matter); it’s still not as obnoxious as COD.

Although I started encountering some pretty bad server woes, I mostly enjoyed the beta. A lot of people are concerned with the speed, saying this isn’t a real Halo, but it felt the most “Halo-like” to me since Halo 3. But I’m no pro, so … yeah.

I haven’t played COD since like Black OPS so I would know how bad it gets. I definitely did like it overall. Just minor things that I had problems with.

Thanks for the assessment, looking forward to trying it out. Some solid critiques.

Haven’t played yet, but your descriptions matched my assumptions of how it would go, That announcer though…

H3: Overkill
H4: OVERKILL!
H5: OOOVER-MOFOKILLLLLLLLL!!! AHHHHHH!!! jumps up and down rips mic in half

Ground Pound:

Got kills with it, but overall worthless. Never once felt like it was the best choice to make. I got killed doing it about 10 times, even in instances where it felt like I should have no problems. I never see it being any sort of advantage in combat, only there to troll and mess with people. Needs to go. Just an extra mechanic to worry about (and mess you up if you accidently crouch while jumping).

Slide:

Never used it. No point really. Could be wrong weapons, but with thruster, sprint, & charge I don’t imagine it ever being worthwhile.

Clamber:

Great new ability for getting around the map.

Thruster:

AMAZING. It feels like a perfect sandbox tool. There are sooo many uses for it. OP says easy to dodge nades, maybe so, but grenades feel so much more destructive in 5. Easier to aim? More powerful? Harder to see when on ground? More ricochets? IDK but I do not feel like I am in anyway safer from grenades. I probably got like 30 grenade kills in the Beta myself (and I’ve always been pretty bad with grenades).

Sprint:

Wasn’t really into it pre-game (or Halo 4), but I think it works very well here. The no-shield regen balances it out well and makes it an ability to simply get from A to B and not run away.

Spartan Charge:

A little strange this one. Sometimes it seemed fine, other times it just kills me instantly. IDK how it registers damage but more often than not I feel like I’m doing more harm than good. Fun to use, and a good tactic to switch things up on the enemy, but may be some sort of balancing/mechanic issue. If that doesn’t improve than remove.

i think the ground pound, slide, charge and what not will be more useful in objective games

I am thoroughly enjoying it. I love the ground pound it’s a high risk move but it is so satisfying when you get a kill with it (and it feels badass). On the flip side I don’t feel cheated or its cheap if I am killed by it and I’ve been caught a good couple times with it. I’ve also managed to use the Spartan Dash to avoid it and turn it into an assassination. Spartan Dash is also great for dodging Sword Lunges.

I’m rubbish with the Spartan Shoulder Charge… only managed to connect it twice

The only one I haven’t found a use for is the Spartan Slide… I thought it would be like a leg take down or kick enemies back but so far I either haven’t connected with it properly or not used it correctly.

I loved me the BR and the DMR man. That sword was super fun too when thrustering around and killing a whole team it leads to moments like this.

There were just too many times where normally I would have died from a grenade but thruster saved me. So in a more classic halo game, the opponent would have gotten the kill whereas now they got jipped.
