Halo CE had a longer section of this, Halo 2 had three sections of this, then Halo 3 went back a notch and had two. Halo 3: ODST had one short section and then one “redeeming” end section. Halo: Reach had potential, but only one short section.
What am I talking about? Well the Scorpion Tank sessions of course.
Halo CE’s section was probably the longest of them all, and what fun it was as well. There was space to move around on, enemies that almost required the precense of the mighty Scorpion and then the length of the section, it only added to the fun.
Halo 2 had three tank sections if you were lucky, four if you count the Wraith. First one with the Chief going over the bridge. Several number of enemy vehicles as well as the destructible human vehicles littering the bridge, it was mayhem at a large scale. Second time again with the Chief on Delta Halo, a little shorter section but still plausible. You extended a bridge, hopped in a tank and started mowing. Third section was also on Delta Halo with the Arbiter, you could hijack a Scorpion from the flood if you managed not to destroy it. A section full of debris enemies and area to move on. If you count the Wraith you did have a small section on the last map, a little tricker but still immense fun.
Halo 3’s section were lengthy and did have space to move, and both ended with Scarabs in the end. Unless of course you took a Hornet at the end where you encountered two Scarabs.
Halo 3: ODST’s first on the other hand wasn’t that fun. Narrow streets and a short section almost made the tank redundant. The other section was more like Halo 2’s first section. A lot of enemies and explosive litter littering the streets.
Halo: Reach did have potential, could have assaulted a heavily defended Covenant base with massive ground combat. What do we have? One short section with few enemies. First impression was “Holy pancakes, let’s roll -Yoinks!-”, now it’s more like “meh”. Halo Wars’ Grizzly section was more fun.
I wish Halo 4 will have atleast one proper section with whatever powerful toys we get to play with. Lots and lots of enemies, vehicles as well as infantry and lengthy, very lengthy so that when we finally get our hands on it, we actually get to use it. If there’s a Firefight mode, then try to include it there as well, put more emphasis on Anti-Armor enemies to make it more challenging.
