As we all know by now (hopefully), Buck was not the original fourth member of Fireteam Osiris. That place was originally reserved for Spartan Thorne, the Spartan from the Spartan Ops series from Halo 4.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Buck as a character and enjoyed him both in Halo 3: ODST and Halo 5: Guardians. However, I felt like he was “forced” in simply due to fan service.
Do you think Spartan Thorne would’ve been a better choice, simply to allow his character to develop further from his stories in Halo 4 and the comic series? Or do you think it was a good idea to scrap Thorne and replace him with Buck?

I’m kind of split with it. I love Buck as a character and definitely thought he brought some good humor. However it would’ve been a great way to flesh out Thorne more in the hopes of him becoming a prominent Halo character.
I actually could agree to an extent in buck being forced just cause people liked him in ODST. However thorn or buck both did/would’ve been under developed anyways cuz that’s what h5s story failed at. You get more out of the comics/books on these characters than you do with h5s campaign and that shouldn’t be a campaign is made. I care very little for these characters in h5 and was disturbed to see Cortana be ruined and chief regress compared to h4.

I believe they weren’t able to get the voice actor for Thorne back Halo 5, so getting Nathan Fillion on board was the next best thing they could have done (they covered this in one of the Sprint episodes I think). Personally I’m glad they went with Buck

That’s a shame that they couldn’t get his voice actor. Here’s to hoping that Thorne can make an appearance in the future somehow.

Perhaps he, Majestic, and Fireteam Crimson would be cool if they appeared in Halo 6.
I think that Buck is a better person for the job, and I don’t mean as a spartan. Buck shows us that not every spartan is some unstoppable super soldier, it shows that they are humans that are better equipped (skill wise) to handle certain situations, they are the commandos of the UNSC. I also think that his role switching from leader to lead is an interesting concept, seeing someone who is usually the one in control being told what to do and trying to match up to his squad mates is a good change of pace.
what I would have love to see is Jun being a member of Osiris as the sniper, one of the last true Spartans in the world being thrown back into the fray, that would be entertaining.
Thorne wasn’t at all memorable to me. I think bring back Buck was a good move; not necessarily for the narrative, but for player investment. Nathan has a certain charm about him that just makes things better. Without Buck, Osiris would have been entirely comprised of newbies to the franchise (yes, even Locke, I mean how many people actually watched Nightfall?). Even if you don’t read the books, at least Blue Team had Chief. Buck is Osiris’s “Chief”, not in capability but in recognition. He had one game and a cameo in another and look how popular he became. With Buck on the team, it’s like “Oh, Buck’s with them. If he’s cool with them, maybe they’re not so bad”.
Buck is an extremely strong character and was very well received by most of the community in every game he appeared in. Thorne was honestly rather forgettable, all he really had going for him was good morals. I think Buck was the right choice, as he alone added a lot to an otherwise weak cast.
