So I decided I was going to play some FFA and see what rank I would get. In the previous seasons I got ranked I was diamond 2 and another season I started out diamond 6 and got to Onyx for a short time. So naturally I was matched with high diamonds and onyx players in some games and platinum players with low diamond in others. In the platinum games I excelled where as in the higher ranked games I did ok.
The part that I don’t understand is that I got platinum 5 when I’ve never started out ranked that low. If you’re going to rank a player low let him play against equal ranked people, don’t throw him in with a bunch of higher ranked players where he gets stomped and looks like a worse player to the system if you’re not going to give him a rank with those players.
My understanding is that the rank you previously had had the greatest influence on what rank you’d get the next season. If this is the case how could I go lower than I’ve ever been before?
Well, by your own admission, you’d been a Diamond/Onyx player before, so it makes sense that the game would give you that level of competition to see if you really deserve to be ranked that high. If you didn’t really play well against higher Diamond/Onyx players, but played well against Plats and low Diamonds, why do you think the game should still rank you with those higher Diamond/Onyx players?
As the saying goes, if you really believe you’re better than the system thinks you are, you’ll prove it by working your way up.

You’ve actually got it backwards.
Getting stomped on by high ranked players almost always results in a higher placement than if you were the one doing stomping on lower ranked players.
You beat 5 Platinum and the game still only thinks you’re a mid-high platinum, whereas if you lose to 4 Diamonds and beat 1 Diamond, the game at least thinks you’re low diamond.

You placed lower because when they changed the FFA ranking system to make 4-6th place finishes less rewarding, they also made a mistake which resulted in all FFA ranks being shoved down 1 full tier at the beginning (I can’t remember if they are fixing this or not).
So if you placed Platinum 5 this season, that’s more like placing Diamond 5 in a season before this change.
Also, the rank you get at the end of placements is always 2 below where it actually thinks you are…
so if it gives you Platinum 3, it means it actually thinks you’re a Platinum 5, but just wants to stay on the safe side in case it’s wrong – that way you don’t get disappointed if you get ranked Plat 5 and then immediately start deranking.
So since you placed Platinum 5, the system actually thinks your real rank rank is Diamond 1, and you should see it slowly increase towards that as you play a bit more.
And because the ranks were all pushed down since the change, your “true estimated” rank that it thinks you’re at, is equivalent to low Onyx in an earlier season.
If you think you’ve got it bad, there’s a guy who got FFA champ rank like 4 seasons in a row, who now is ending this season at Diamond 3 after 800+ matches.
FFA was previously the easiest rank in the game and was basically a joke, but now it’s actually one of the more difficult ones. There’s less than 100 champions after 2 full months and only a handful of them have anything less than 50% win rate.

Thank you for the clarification, everything you said makes sense. And I do know of the player you’re talking about with the 800 games I looked at his profile yesterday.

What you’re saying also makes sense, however I was coming more from the standpoint of how did it think that plat 5 was where I needed to be after giving me diamond and almost onyx in previous seasons and pitting me against diamond and onyx players in my placement matches.
