Co-Creator of the Halo universe? Why haven’t I heard of him before.
The Sharqoui and Drinols were never confirmed to be the same species, and its not even clear that the Sharqoui is a species rather than a weapon. The only source describing the Sharqoui to my knowledge is the conversations from across the universe, and from what I recall the context suggests it is a WMD. The Drinols were never introduced into the canon, and their name and design was just a nod to Marathon, like the Hunters, only from what bungie developers said after Halo 2, the Drinol sucked, so they cut it early on in Halo 2s development. I doubt 343 would want to create an even deeper suspicion of a connection between Halo and Marathon / Destiny, then what already exists just to include Drinols. With a Marathon remake / reboot / game explicitly set in a alternate timeline in the Marathon story probably in the works, including a Drinol in Halo canon so close to its release would just spoil some of the shock value of the inevitable revelation that they are connected. I’m sure they could create a new race that was large and whose only action was to chase and melee you, i’m just not sure it would work for Halo.
Edit: Marcus was one of the so called grizzled ancients at Bungie, he was one of only a dozen or so people who were working at Bungie at the beginning of Halos development. That is what he is referring to, so in that sense he is a co-creator with other people like Jason Jones, Joseph Staten, Robert Mclees, etc.
Edit: Actually come to think about it, I sort of remember a image of a stone tablet featuring several species in the Covenant, and it included the Drinol, I can’t remember if it was canon or not, but it might of been.
Just looks like a big bullet spunge to me. Whats this do that a hunter can’t?
The Drinol was the name for Halo 1, and the Sharquoi was the name for Halo 2.
http://www.halopedia.org/Sharquoi
Marcus Lehto confirmed it.
And Grim also confirmed they are still canon.
“They still exist, though we cannot yet disclose specifics.”
So the Drinol/Sharquoi is still in the universe. As for the bullet sponge thing, that’s up to 343 to make it balanced. Something like the Guta would be pretty correct. (but tougher, because the Guta was a little bit too weak) And 343 can’t possibly do something worse than their Warzone bosses…
I wasn’t aware that Marcus confirmed the Drinnol and Sharqoui were one and the same, thats interesting, do you have a link?. I never bought that interpretation of the conversations across the universe convo (the only instance of the word Sharqoui in canon), because the Elite prefaces his statement, the one quoted in the wiki you linked to, by talking about mankinds position on the galactic stage.
The elite is clearly inferring mankind is being boxed in, based on their behavior in space battles, and the erratic way they pull off planned retreats, and when he talks about the Sharqoui he is saying they will soon be able to use them because they’re being boxed in on the galactic stage. Its certainly not intuitive to me that the Covenant would view the Drinol as more or less useful in CQC engagements on the ground based on mankinds overall standing in the galaxy. It seems more likely that the Sharqoui is a weapon of mass destruction capable of destroying an entire solar system, or perhaps multiple. Maybe it causes suns to go super nova prematurely. Honestly I don’t know how I didn’t think of that before now.
They should include them in Halo 6. The lack of Covenant races in the last two games actually kinda bugs me. I know they take a handful of Covenant races and combine them with the newer Prometheans, but they should still add the other species. Perhaps they feel too many races would be redundant? Like the Promethean Soldier’s ability to teleport around quickly reminds me of the Skirmishers because they’re so nimble. Perhaps they feel that if they have Promethean Soldier’s then they don’t need Skirmishers? They don’t exactly have to appear on the battlefield at the same time though. Take “Exodus” from Halo Reach for example. This level removes all Elites and makes it a Brute only level. They could do the same thing in Halo 6 by having missions where Soldiers appear but Skirmishers don’t and levels where Skirmishers appear but Soldiers don’t. Sounds easy enough to me.
Would be nice to have more species to fight.

I think you’re overthinking the matter lol. If they say it’s a species, then it’s a species. As for the source, it’s given in the link (see below, in the sources, especially from Twitter: “What we used to call the Drinol”).
Regarding the Sangheili’s discussion, I think it’s too vague to make any conclusion. But you could argue the Sharquoi are heavy shock troopers that the Covenant could not afford losing. (Especially if they were part of the Covenant Fringe!) Now that the humans were on the verge of losing, the Sangheili thought they could afford risking some Sharquoi on the battlefield. But really, it’s just too vague to understand anything without the developers’ comments.

Also no hope in bringing them back to life using necromancy unlike this thread.

I think they are canon, but they are a minor species that is part of the Covenant Fringe (like Axl from Nightfall). Same about the other cut Covenant species. I think someone important said a long time ago.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but they were never really… there.
Of course, in the development process they were present, but that doesn’t mean we got to fight them. Undoubtedly, they could be made into a pugnacious foe if 343i tried to incorporate them. However, please cleanse this ‘return’ notion from your head, as if it were to ever happen it would be done in a completely different way- to something that never was incorporated. It’s like anyone preaching for Elite shield gauntlets to ‘return’…

It’s possible they’re others in stasis on other planets or installations, but I wish yhey didn’t introduce them and just kill them off for nothing
