According to this reddit post, which is based off the recently leaked SDK, the matchmaking issues are not entirely 343’s fault. MS has switched how matchmaking occurs on xbox live and MCC might be the first game to utilize it and it bombed on them. That’s why it’s taking so long to fix, because they didn’t create the issue but have to deal with a system that was given to them.
Here are a few pertinent snippets from the post, but I advise reading it in it’s entirety.
> The 2015 Multiplayer system has been in preview form for a period of time and I believe Halo: MCC was the very first game to try it out and it failed miserably. The issue is on the MS backend. They thought it was working fine but all the handshakes don’t work. This is why 343 has been unable to fix the problem. They didn’t really create the issue, they used the system they were given and they don’t want to go back now because in the end it will be better.
>
> I also believe this is why 343 included a p2p backup plan, if the new matchmaking failed to connect to dedicated then you would revert to p2p.
> The multiplayer in Xbox One enables the assembling of game players into groups. The system is secure, easy to use, and flexible, allowing you not only to build simple features quickly, but also to build more complex features and plug in your own services.
> At the core of the multiplayer system is the multiplayer session. The session is a secure document that resides in the Xbox Live cloud, and represents a group of users who are connected while playing a title on Xbox One. All the aspects of multiplayer—such as matchmaking, chat parties, join in-progress, and so on—leverage the multiplayer session.
>
> Two versions of the multiplayer are available for Xbox One:
>
> 2014 Multiplayer. This version is based on the concept of the “game party” and participation in games through parties. This version will be deprecated in later releases.
>
> 2015 Multiplayer (previously 2015 Multiplayer Preview). This multiplayer version abstracts the game party concept and uses the multiplayer session directory (MPSD) to control game sessions.

You’re right. Point is the game is still broken and pointing fingers won’t change that. However, I think people should know why and MS and 343 have not been forthcoming. It would be nice to have them confirm this is the reason. That way we can be assured that we are being updated with the proper information as to the true cause and that a real fix is forthcoming.
Unfortunately, that reddit post suggests that 343 has a gag placed on it by MS preventing them from disclosing this. Transparency, I believe, is in the best interests of the gaming community who love this franchise and spent $$$ on a game that does not work as promised.
Yeah I read about this yesterday too. Thanks for posting it up here I was just too lazy.
This is somewhat alleviating to hear for some reason, although it changes nothing. Its just nice to know the possibility that 343 are not complete incompetents.

If true, this would ameliorate some of 343s ineptitude with regards to MCC, but not all of it. MCCs problems are not limited to matchmaking. 343 does not deserve a pass, nor do they deserve a successful preorder of Halo5

Agreed. 343 is responsible for many bugs. Just look at the update details for each update. Not all are related to matchmaking, for sure. But I would argue that connecting and playing with friends against other parties over xbox live is the biggest issue.
However, in terms of Halo5, if they were to at least confirm this and layout a clear, succinct roadmap to resolving it it would go a long way for me personally in reviving hope for Halo5. They will not get a pre-order from me, nor should they from anyone, until they have addressed this in a transparent manner and instilled complete confidence in the community this will not happen for Halo5 (which most assuredly is using this new 2015 matchmaking system).
That being said, 343 has a huge hole they need to dig out of and a lot of effort is required to mend its relationship with its consumer base. They can start the healing process by admitting if the new 2015 matchmaking system is the core issue with matchmaking and they are deligently working on a fix for that particular issue. That’s not to say they are not working on a fix. I whole heartedly believe they are. It’s just that so far they’ve been vague with what the core reason is behind the matchmaking woes.
We are losing, if not already for a lot of the community, faith in 343. They need to come out and say X is the problem and we are doing Y to fix it. Of course, if MS has put a gag order on them, as the reddit post suggests, then they may not be able to. Which puts the ball in MS’s hands. They need to lift alleged gag and allow a proper discourse to take place between the developers and consumers as to why their product is not working.
How come Halo MCC is the only game not working then? Plenty of multiplayer games have released since then and they all work fine. 343 screwed this game up, it’s on them, people really shouldn’t make excuses for them. Halo is literally the only game I’ve had trouble with on X1, period.
itz Keefy, it looks like the new system probably needs to be coded into the games themselves. All the other games are still running on the prior system. H5 beta would definitely be on the new system and it is still having some issues. They likely significantly tweaked the code prior to its release.

That makes no sense. Why would they do this? Why would they continue to do this when the game isn’t working after 2 months? Why would they use arguably their biggest game on X1 as a “lab rat”? I’m not buying it, they would have used a smaller game to test the waters, not the biggest xbox franchise ever, lol. 343 ruined this game, not Microsoft’s new multiplayer system which isn’t even confirmed, blame 343 not some new multiplayer system that isn’t even public yet.

The new system is 100% confirmed. Its in their documentation. Go look it up yourself. They are going back to the 360 party system where game parties are handled by the OS, while party app is more just chat.
The new system is having issues on the backend more likely. It probably worked in test, but went down in flames when it was live on public servers.
Yes, I’ve already posted about this very same thing, reddit post and everything, literally yesterday. Pretty much not worth making a post about it if this news is already a day old. We already know.

I am so sorry!
Silly me to think that the more people who know about this the better. Didn’t know everyone already knew. How embarrassing.
It’s a shame we finally get dedicated servers on xbox one and Halo but due to this we’re still playing p2p. I sincerely hope dedicated servers becomes 100% soon.

Anybody who plays, let alone pre orders halo 5 is a schmuck. If you like halo 5 then I can certainly entertain you by giving you a basket full of disks consisting of the entire call of duty franchise. The games a joke. Whoever plays it must really love horrible and unoriginal games. I’d be completely shocked if anyone actually puts their halo 5 disk in when their MCC is right beside it (when or if it starts functioning properly.)
