This is the most predatory monetisation scheme in a long time

Yes every battle pass game I have played gives premium credits to those who spent for premium battle pass. Usually you earn exactly what you spent so you technically just spent 10 bucks for 10 cod points, vbucks whatever. You can choose to then buy the next BP or save em

If you don’t like the way games are funded and you want change.

You need to stop buying battle passes and stop paying for subscriptions like Game Pass.

However there would be draw backs. The less money these companies make the quality of game and service would drop.

Somebody has to pay for these teams of 200+ creatives to make the games we play.

Not to mention the streams we watch and the tournaments that are held. More people working more livelihoods to fund (sustainability and mental health)

Twenty years ago the cost of a game was far less to make but the standard of games that they made would be overlooked in todays climate. The life span of these games were weeks and months not years and decades (although destiny wasn’t a ten year game - more like a two hour campaign on repeat)

You (we) are all horrible people when we judge the workmanship (person) on offer. Why should we expect perfection?

In relative terms £100 could buy me a single evening at a restaurant with a partner or a friend? Is Halo really that much when we compare the amount of hours you (we) are going to invest in this game?

Think about what you want to buy and if you don’t like it don’t buy it.

I suspect that premium credits are completely absent from battlepasses is due to them never expiring.
If you were to buy one battlepass, you’d have access to all of them, or, one for every two or three you complete, depending on how much premium currency there is in a battlepass.
It can’t be too much, according to them, and not too little according to us, and I doubt we’d find a figure we’d all agree on.

I dislike what they’re doing, but that’s my suspicion as to why premium currency isn’t featured.

In order to combat this maybe they could have another in game currency thats only given as milestones or battlepass rewards? It wouldnt be used to buy more battlepasses but items on the cash shop?

They most certainly could’ve done that, something they should’ve done, and should do.
However they’re testing this now, and then maybe alter it a little to not be so bad in comparison. Maybe then we’ll get credits, spartan coins or brute teeth to purchase items with.

In a long time
Black Ops 3 came out 6 years ago…

It’s the challenge swaps that get to me.

The one aspect that non-paying customers are supposed to be able to work towards but are in fact another trap to try and get you to spend money.

They even tell you “use swaps to complete challenges”.

Give player silly challenge
Force them to use swaps
Limit amount of swaps
Force player to buy more

They’ve literally created an unnecessary problem and then offer to sell you the solution!!

It’s completely underhand.

They lead you down the path with free swaps but as soon as they run out, you’re in a dead-end.

“b-b-but what about muh poor devs”
Don’t care. It’s a company not a charity, stop trying to gaslight people into thinking they have to be okay with manipulative monetisation schemes. This isn’t just a matter of don’t like it don’t buy it as we’ve already been over earlier in the thread.

As such it’s not free.
Just like this first battlepass is “free”.

Stretching it real thin trying to blame the developers on that kind of thing, as opposed to literal mechanics and features the developers have implemented in order to make things less enjoyable and more frustrating.
Even if I agreed with that, the latter is far more direct and designed to be that way. Far more “scummy” than releasing a map pack.

And that’s somehow the developer’s fault? What your friends decide to do?

First it was less frustrating, now it’s not frustrating.
They’re still going for frustrating, we’re just being experimented on and getting a bad option followed by a slight alteration, and we see it as something extremely positive.

Overshoot first, make something a little more tolerable but still bad. Players feel it at least isn’t as horrible as the first, and are content with the new system. The current system would’ve still met backlash had it been first, and if the old one we had was the replacement we’d seen that as good and dandy, because more XP for less matches.

The point is, it’s all about them and never the community.

It is not that they are making money which is the issue.
It is how they are making it.

Depends on how long ago you look.
The subject is hyperbole at best but Infinite clearly shot up there among the contenders for a bad way of doing things.

And it’ll continue to be slow unless i343 adress the challenge tracking bottleneck.
I said it back then, i343 has every opportunity to screw it up.
Just because the battlepass doesn’t expire doesn’t mean things around it can’t royally screw it over.
The battlepass on its own is fine and dandy as it is, even without premium currency.
But the swaps and the boosts are presented because they made it frustrating to level up.

Before I give any feedback I do want to make it a point to mention, this is by far 343i’s best game, the core gameplay is rock solid and it is incredibly fun to play. I’ve been playing Halo since CE first came out, (saying that makes me feel really old, or… depending on how you look at it, way too young to have been playing CE when it arrived) and even after all these years remain a big fan and happily call Halo my favorite game

With than being said, I can honestly say that the overall monetization scheme of this game feels incredibly disappointing , predatory , and off-putting .
I feel disappointed because I put blind faith in the devs, that they wouldn’t make a predatory system after everything that happened with Halo 5 and yet, this somehow feels worse than Halo 5’s. I’ll attempt to break it down as best I can:

  • Monetization pricing/separating things from the battle pass, I think is incredibly pressing that has and is fundamentally changing the way people think about Halo as a title. I have always thought about Halo as a game above the rest. However, because of the way this game has been monetized it literally make it feel like a non-battle royal warzone, Fortnite, or mobile game. It is crucial to immediately stop adding items to the store which are cooler than items in the battle pass. This is extremely off-putting, feels very money grubby and honestly rude, it literally feels like 343i’s way of giving fans the finger for buying the battle pass and everyone sees right through this.

  • Now I realize money needs to be made so how can this be done? Throughout this feedback I have included a bunch of different ways to monetize the multiplayer while still putting the player first, which is necessary anyway because if the player is not put first then they will stop playing, which then is bad for shareholders. A player first mentality geared towards value also creates a way to make content last longer and therefore elongates the lifespan of the game (10 years actually meaning 10 years). Right now It does not feel like there is any value in the battle pass. If the current multiplayer monetization system does not change the game’s player base will decrease and people likely just won’t buy anything.

  • For example, on day one I bought a credit pack to unlock the battle pass and future passes , then I see that items in the store are prohibitively more expensive than the pass and (for some) store items are way cooler than anything even in the pass… this just makes no sense, and - for lack of a better phrase - feels like you did me dirty. Everyone sees this as being incredibly greedy and personally I refuse to spend any more money on the game after this. I don’t even know that I will get the next battle pass, and to be perfectly honest I want a refund. Especially since I bought credits day one and now, they are cheaper than what I paid so, at the very least I feel I am owed $10.

  • The progression system, or of lack there of. More specifically there is no ranking system for playing the game in social, this (for most) is a bummer. There’s many things that could be done to duct tape and Band-Aid this but those options will never really fix the issue.

  • Another (arguably better) option is just to scrap it and follow the MCC template in a hybrid kind of way. Get rid of the store or make it’s only purpose used for buying the battle pass. Instead have all the customization items currently in and scheduled for the store (armors/coatings/effects, etc.) be the reward for completing capstone/seasonal challenges, but also make them more attainable. The goal here is to incentivize players to just play the game a lot, but not be pissed that they have to do it in a specific way. It should encourage player freedom and reward positive behaviors. Doing it like this also puts more emphasis on battle pass progression while working towards harder challenges (ie, capstone/premium seasonal ones) and lengthens the relevance of content. That would literally mean what’s been made already will last longer, the best part is people wouldn’t notice and would be happier because of the value and ability to obtain it through playing. There could be 10 weekly challenges then capstone, or just capstone and it’s based on something that promotes player freedom. Get rid of daily challenges and move to an XP per match system (calculated by match performance).

  • As for Ranking system and Battle pass/progression through both, an idea would be - every 10 ranks, the increasing XP needed for next rank progression resets almost like a mini prestige. This can be intertwined with the battle pass without making them conflicting things, it would also allow for some flexibility when changing which battle pass is turned on without changing rank. Most importantly, it would reward consistent progression, so people don’t feel it is taking too long.

  • What about the money? Charge more for the battle pass and people will buy it IF, AND ONLY IF THERE IS VALUE. Everything I mentioned above will add a significant amount of that. Final step is just charge a fair price, some people won’t buy anything regardless but I’d think most people will. Having a strong happy player base = millions of players buying something every 3ish months, which adds up pretty quick. 10 Years later those profits might amount to less than what is currently projected (even if savings from changes are taken into account) but if the monetization system doesn’t move away from its current model, those recent profit projections will be grossly overestimated.

If I recall the idea behind creating this system was to give players that ‘just one more game feeling’, however, the current setup literally does the opposite of that and makes it feel like a chore. If that ‘one more game feeling’ is what’s being sought after, just rely on the core gameplay to create this. It’s more than enough and the best bonus is rewarding players for enjoying it in their own way.

Lastly, to any devs/team members who that read this - Thank you! Thank you for hearing the community/fans. Thank you for all your hard work on this game and Thank you for creating something that truly is incredibly fun and special in so many ways. We all really appreciate it.

They could put the E-sports and, put some of the season specific in the premium Battle Pass (Noble team’s bundle, armor effects) and put the more common ones in the free Battle Pass.
By doing this we have:
-Shop (for the rich kids): E-Sports Skins, unique armor effects and the like. Legendary quality
-Premium Battle Pass (probably the majority of the playerbase): Noble Team and Reach inspired Gear, basically everything you put in the Mark V(B) armor core. Rare and Ultra Rare Quality
-Free Battle Pass (The incentive to attract more players): Basic customization, basically the things you put in the Mark VII armor core. Common and Uncommon quality.
I think this is the more middle-ground solution.

What I hate is they absolutely will not change this by the time the rest is the game launches on Dec 8. 343 needs to come out and say what will be expected to change on launch day and what is changing for cosmetics/progression down the road.

This can’t wait for season 2 to fix, that’s months away. They need to make huge overhauls mid season now before player numbers drop like a rock by the time season 2 starts.

As it is, it’s a non-fun tedious grind with horrid challenges that can’t even be completed half the time. Halo MCC was so much better than this.

I just want to add my voice to this in the hopes that 343i is paying attention. Guys, I love this game. The sandbox itself feels great, matches are constantly enjoyable and even with the few bugs that exist I think it’s the best Halo experience you have put out so far in terms of gameplay.

But this monetization is predatory. It’s going to, and has already I’m sure, push people away. You’re advertising Season 1 as the “Heroes of Reach” pass, and have content for it behind a $10 paywall. But then you insult the players by making the majority of the free track CHALLENGE SWAPS, you make us unlock the same shoulder pads twice, you take a visor color or coating and instead of making them usable across all armor cores you limit them to one which artificially extends your pass while also making it feel worse for people who only like one core or another.

On top of that, you’re taking a ton of iconic pieces from Reach, the game that this pass is FOCUSED ON, and throwing them into separate purchases. JFO, CQC, Hazop and parts of commando and security from Reach are NOT included in the Reach pass and will be sold separately, if the leaked bundles are correct. I’m also pretty sure I saw Jump jet shoulders, Operator shoulders, Recon shoulders, UA Multi-Threat shoulders, a UA helmet attachement, a HUL helmet attachement, a CNM helmet attachement and what appears to be the Reach default chestpiece with the knife and the HP Parafoil chestpiece.

Please, listen to your community. We want this game to thrive as much as you do, and I feel like even a few small changes overall will make the majority of the community way happier.

Over 1000$ for all store unlocks, which encompass 90% of the customization system, which they advertised as offering just as much free as paid content for players, advertising that this system was player first and positive for the player and company, but at the end of the day if was all lies and the only people benefiting are the executives at 343 and Microsoft.
Stop comparing halo to other games that are f2p, halo has always had customization and those games didnt, this is a feature people came to multiplayer for, and now its all paywalled no matter what with almost no avenues for players to earn anything, even the free events are monetized.
Your take is an L

in this case you probaly don’t want to know that the Pokemon MOBA, Pokemon Unite (the first MOBA of worlds financially most successful franchise of all times) offers sparkling skins which cost actually 40 bucks and they offer multiple of them.

If you really call Infinite’s Battle Pass “the most predatory monetisation scheme”, then frankly, you haven’t seen many of them my guy.

If they do that the forum will be burnt to the ground, as will the reddit. And all their twitter accounts will be obliterated. I dont think theyre that stupid

Seriously, you could play Warzone for free (sure you’ll be limited to Warzone modes) and have all the weapon, camos, some operators from Modern Warfare, Black Ops, and Vanguard soon. all of that for free, and some behind a $10 Battlepass (that expires unfortunately, thats why I wanted Halo to be a great thing for customers). There are paid bundles too who are priced way too high, but it seems that Infinite is kinda worse than that, so that’s really disappointing, worse than Activision damn.

Don’t forget that 343 is deleting old posts about the customization aspects of the game as well. It’s almost like they want the players to just forget about this stuff…you can find them on web dot archive dot org.

A quote from a now-deleted post:
“We’re not trying to build a grind-machine that burns everyone out in an attempt to get more game time from them”

That’s exactly what the current system is though…it’s worth a quick read if you’re looking for a laugh. Hopefully what they said about being willing to iterate on the progression system is true because the current system needs to be scrapped entirely. The game being free and the battlepass not being time-limited aren’t good excuses when it will take hundreds or thousands of hours to unlock everything.

Players should earn xp based upon their in-game actions just like MCC does it and free players should be able to earn whatever the cash shop currency is called. Half the cosmetics currently REQUIRE the player to spend money. Free players can even unlock pieces of sets that can only be used if they purchase the set from the shop, it’s just incredibly stupefyingly bad.
