I see a lot of threads getting locked and the justification is supposedly that they aren’t constructive posts.
I am curious as to what this means. Constructive presupposes we are all working towards an end goal. So is there some kind of forum mission statement that was sent out? I’m not talking about forum rules. Rules are definitive but a mission statement is very subjective.
I think the last thing a rule or law needs is subjectivity on the scale of being “constructive” or not.
I mean to be blunt it seems to be just an excuse to pick and choose which threads to lock and which ones not to.
And then there is the issue of a bunch of threads being moved from the halo 4 forum to the matchmaking forum. What, exactly, are we supposed to talk about in the halo 4 forum if storyline threads are moved and multiplayer threads are moved?
No offense but one way to kill a forum is through over moderation. This happened all the time at bungie.net.
Contribute to the topic at hand and don’t go off topic essentially.
If someone makes a topic saying something like, how can we make Halo 4 better - a non-constructive post would be LOL DIS GAME SUX, CANT BE SAVED.
A moderator will probably swoop in momentarily and clarify a lot more in-depth but that’s the basic jist of it.
As for the Halo 4 section, general stuff about the game - if you want to talk about a specific weapon, mission, level, or anything non-story & Matchmaking related, it belongs there.
I don’t understand what you mean by the need for a ‘mission statement’. The rules are pretty clear about which sort of topics are welcome, and which ones are not. Here are a few excerpts:
> •Post your comments, opinions and ideas in a constructive and respectful way.
> •Please do not have a large percentage of your posts that are only negative rants against anything Halo, Xbox, or the forums. This is a form of trolling that only inflames the community and incites more flaming and abusive posts.
Like Moa said, constructive criticism is a good thing and can hopefully lead to a change for the better, but it’s obvious when someone has put literally no thought into their post and it comes across as a negative rant without much discussion potential. The best thing to do with those is just block the comments. They don’t help the forums and just spread negativity like a poison.
If posts like those were allowed to stand the forums would be full of them and it would be so negative around here I wouldn’t want to spend my time here.
> The mission statement comment was sarcasm. I understand what a constructive post is.
>
> Thing is, many mods around here seem to be biased in what they consider to be constructive.
Have to agree with this. I’ve seen people get banned over trivial things I consider an unfair ban or their post being blocked as “non-constructive” and when I open the so called non-constructive post it happens to have a lot of insightful information. Even posts that got thanked by many users. Doesn’t make sense to me really.
This is why I don’t voice my opinion ever. I’ll get banned if I do. Not willing to chance it.

I’ve highlighted the relevant. To you it may seem unfair or trivial however we have far more knowledge and information to go on than the posts you guys see. Just because a post gets thanked doesn’t automatically exempt it from the rules or mean we give it special consideration.
You can voice your opinion as long as you do so in a respectful and constructive manner. In fact, plenty of people do and are still around to tell the tale.
An example of being constructive is stating an opinion, describing why you formed that opinion, enabling discussion or even proposing a solution to your opinion.
Being non-constructive is along the lines of “Game sucks” and “population sucks”. These provide little discussion value, offer no logical formed opinion and provide nothing to the developers/members in terms of what you would actually like instead.
Often the posters who are moderated have by passed profanity filters, created multiple accounts, are short/insulting to other members and more. As SnickerDoodle states we have more access behind the scenes to what goes on.
Moving threads is required, there are over 500,000 Waypoint members and posters which gives rise to very busy forums at times. We’re here to keep things logically organised. We’re mostly volunteers and fans of Halo just like you, we have no hidden agenda or directives from 343i/MS.
Matchmaking is to do with War Games multiplayer e.g. Infinity slayer, throwdown, Flood or even Spartan Ops matchmaking co-op.
The Halo 4 forum is a broader forum supporting posts about story, campaign, mission design, audio, CGI, characters, Spartan Ops CGI, campaign, events, figurines (directly related to Halo 4) and more.
The other forums are pretty clearly labelled e.g. Universe, Community Creations, War Games Feedback (direct playlist/setting feedback).

This^
I’ve been registered on these forums for over a year and haven’t made even 200 posts because of that. I’ve also seen ironic bans for other reasons too.
I’ve seen people make an insightful and respectable post that got a flame reply from trolls, then the OP got banned.
I’ve also seen people get their post banned for being “off topic” When they answered a yes or no question with a yes or no.
I get a laugh out of the irony. Personally, whenever I see a post or thread that was locked for being “non-constructive”, I’ll immediately open it because most of the time they end up being the most constructive.

And with that, I’m closing this thread because at this point, it’s a borderline discussion of moderation. If you’d like to continue it further, feel free to PM a mod or talk to the admin team.
