THIS is how long it will take you to DL the update

Alright, so a lot of people are worried about the 20gig day 1 update. It wont be as big a deal as everyone things it will. I have decided to list some averages for how long it will take you to download the update. Note, these are averages, and many factors come into the equation such as what quality ethernet cables you are using, what other things are going on on your households’ internet connection, if you are on a wired or wireless connection, etc. I will first start things out with a few suggestions to make the process easier for you on Day 1.

Installing The Game

Ok, so you are ready to install the game. If you pre-ordered the digital version, hopefully you have already pre-loaded the game and can simply skip this step. If you got the game on disk, I would recommend turning off your system’s internet connection while installing the game so that your system can first focus on installing the disk. To do this, follow these instructions:

From the dashboard, press the Menu button.
Select “Settings”.
Select “Network”.
Scroll down and select “Go offline”. Your console is no longer connected to Xbox LIVE.
Now, go ahead and install the game.
Once finished, follow these steps to go back online.
NOTE: If you have problems installing the game from here, go and delete any previous MCC game install by selecting “My Games and Apps” from the dashboard, locating MCC, pressing Menu, and selecting “Manage Game” and choose to uninstall.

Enhancing Your Connection

First things first, make sure you are on a wired connection at least for this update. Wireless connections are convenient and all, but they will always be inferior to wired connections. Updates run on a TCP connection, meaning that whenever packets of data are sent, they are checked to make sure every bit of information is received, and if not, that packet is resent. Wired connections run a lower chance of packet loss.

Next, try to use CAT6 ethernet cables if able. They are shielded better, and provide a higher bandwidth.

If you have the time, look into Port Forwarding your Xbox One console. There are many guides out there, so I wont waste space here. Just google it.

Finally, make sure you limit all other internet usage while downloading the update. Saying “Well, the game is updating, better go watch Netflix” will lower your overall internet bandwidth (as the video needs to be streamed as well!) and causing your update to download slower. Go watch a DVD or practice how long you can hold your breath.

Download Times
So this is the section you probably came here to see. I will list two times. One is just an average download time, and another takes into account an average percentage of overhead. To find out which speed is correct for you, we are going to look at your download speeds. To do this, follow these instructions:

  • From the Xbox One dashboard, press Menu and select “Settings”.- Choose “Network”.- Choose “Detailed Network Statistics”.- Take note of your download speed.(if you do not yet have an Xbox One and want to check your connection, go to http://www.speedtest.net/ on your computer under the same circumstances as your Xbox will be [wired or wireless])

1Mbps download is the minimum connection for Xbox LIVE, so we’ll start there. Once you have your number, match it up to my timetable below:

[Halo: MCC Day 1 Update download time table

](http://s28.postimg.org/9j79o6hil/Time_Table.png)So what does this mean for everyone? Well, many if not most Comcast services offer download speeds of between 50Mbps-150Mbps, so if you are on Comcast, you are looking at a download time of roughly half an hour to an hour. Many others though are on a slower connection of around 8Mbps, and may be looking at a download time of around 7 hours, which is a little rough.

Nice post man

Judging by my connection speed in the Xbox One dashboard, my connection ranges anywhere from 50mbps to about 85mbps (My consoles are connected to the router through a networking hub). The update should take no more than an hour for me.

EDIT: Just did a speedtest with my connection testing from Massachusetts (where I live) to Washington state…which I assume that’s where the update will be downloaded from. Currently at 68.24 mbps download, 11.93 upload.

Just a side note to everyone…try to connect your Xbox to your router directly if possible. This may speed up the download times a bit.

Hey guys, I just updated the post with instructions on how to check your download speed from the console directly. This will give you a more accurate reading than from your computer. However, if you do not have an Xbox One console yet, you can use SpeedTest, but make sure your computer is under the same circumstances as your console will be. For example, if your console will be wireless, check from a laptop on a wireless connection from the same location your Xbox will be.

My computer speed test was: 29-30 Mbps down, 4 up, 12-32 ping.
Xbox One speed test was: 30.33 Mbps down, 4 up, 79 ping, with a wireless strength of 82%

It’ll be about 2 hours. Fun.

11mbps down, 0.8mbps up :(. Are there any UK servers?, my ping is so high like 140-150ms.

Seams like i’m connecting to US servers. Any other non US people find this ?.

I thought ms had servers world wide?.

Nice post shadowstrike1. Now I know it will take at best 42 hrs here in Nigeria to dl. And with a data cap of 120gb, i won’t be downloading this all at one time. Guess Im going to play campaign for awhile. :frowning:

It’ll take me about an hour and a half to download. Not too bad.

Good thing I have Comcast because it will take me up to 18 minutes to 45 minutes depends how will my internet connection is for that day and how many people are downloading the update from the servers but I doubt I’ll have any problem since I pick you up after Gamestop opens and most people that will be downloading it will be doing it in afternoon after they get off school and work.

Thanks for the post

I’m confused.

My Xbox One says this;
Download: 6.63
Upload: 0.65
Ping: 191

And my PC on speedtest says;
Download: 11.85
Upload: 0.65
Ping: 32

How come they’re so different?

I think the download will take like 7 hours or so for me then… But will online work good for me? My ping is very bad I see now… :[

How do you change from where you live? Mine is stuck where I don’t live.

Thanks for the post. I could go wired, but that would require a few cords. Also, wireless is only off by very very few in stats. My wireless more or less reads exactly what my PC speed tests are. I always get 0 packet loss with wireless, so there is no need for improvement there. Wired helps with consistency, but I’m confident enough with wireless for now.

So I’m looking at an 8-10 hour download time for 20gb? Something’s strange about that.

I usually get off work at around 5pm. I placed my new AC4 game in and was able to play and download the full game before even going to to sleep. My connection is like 5.5 down and AC4 is about 22gbs.

So why the high times for MCC 20gb?

thanks, very helpful post.

I made a thread about that before. I believe everyone outside the US are experiencing higher pings cuz the servers are in the US

I have seen many mention that they are connecting to Seattle WA, because when they do a speed test on PC to Seattle, it reads the same thing on Xbox

ehhhhhhhhh… im on 6.54… its gonna take me around 7 hours apparently… ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I think ill get on as soon as its live and install it and just leave it, hope we get it before games unlcoked

I’ll probably buy it Tuesday night and leave it to install overnight. I can play when I get home from work Wednesday .
