Alright, so a lot of people are worried about the 20gig day 1 update. It wont be as big a deal as everyone things it will. I have decided to list some averages for how long it will take you to download the update. Note, these are averages, and many factors come into the equation such as what quality ethernet cables you are using, what other things are going on on your households’ internet connection, if you are on a wired or wireless connection, etc. I will first start things out with a few suggestions to make the process easier for you on Day 1.
Installing The Game
Ok, so you are ready to install the game. If you pre-ordered the digital version, hopefully you have already pre-loaded the game and can simply skip this step. If you got the game on disk, I would recommend turning off your system’s internet connection while installing the game so that your system can first focus on installing the disk. To do this, follow these instructions:
From the dashboard, press the Menu button.
Select “Settings”.
Select “Network”.
Scroll down and select “Go offline”. Your console is no longer connected to Xbox LIVE.
Now, go ahead and install the game.
Once finished, follow these steps to go back online.
NOTE: If you have problems installing the game from here, go and delete any previous MCC game install by selecting “My Games and Apps” from the dashboard, locating MCC, pressing Menu, and selecting “Manage Game” and choose to uninstall.
Enhancing Your Connection
First things first, make sure you are on a wired connection at least for this update. Wireless connections are convenient and all, but they will always be inferior to wired connections. Updates run on a TCP connection, meaning that whenever packets of data are sent, they are checked to make sure every bit of information is received, and if not, that packet is resent. Wired connections run a lower chance of packet loss.
Next, try to use CAT6 ethernet cables if able. They are shielded better, and provide a higher bandwidth.
If you have the time, look into Port Forwarding your Xbox One console. There are many guides out there, so I wont waste space here. Just google it.
Finally, make sure you limit all other internet usage while downloading the update. Saying “Well, the game is updating, better go watch Netflix” will lower your overall internet bandwidth (as the video needs to be streamed as well!) and causing your update to download slower. Go watch a DVD or practice how long you can hold your breath.
Download Times
So this is the section you probably came here to see. I will list two times. One is just an average download time, and another takes into account an average percentage of overhead. To find out which speed is correct for you, we are going to look at your download speeds. To do this, follow these instructions:
- From the Xbox One dashboard, press Menu and select “Settings”.- Choose “Network”.- Choose “Detailed Network Statistics”.- Take note of your download speed.(if you do not yet have an Xbox One and want to check your connection, go to http://www.speedtest.net/ on your computer under the same circumstances as your Xbox will be [wired or wireless])
1Mbps download is the minimum connection for Xbox LIVE, so we’ll start there. Once you have your number, match it up to my timetable below:
[Halo: MCC Day 1 Update download time table
](http://s28.postimg.org/9j79o6hil/Time_Table.png)So what does this mean for everyone? Well, many if not most Comcast services offer download speeds of between 50Mbps-150Mbps, so if you are on Comcast, you are looking at a download time of roughly half an hour to an hour. Many others though are on a slower connection of around 8Mbps, and may be looking at a download time of around 7 hours, which is a little rough.
