I honestly can’t believe that this is Halo I’m looking at.
Billion and a half pre-order bonuses for a bunch of game-altering nonsense exclusive through retailers bundled with content that doesn’t even exist yet.
I think there’s a reason I stopped caring about Halo, and I’m fairly sure this is it. Halo is going balls-deep in the generic shooter public pool, and in more ways than just pimping itself out to custom loadouts, perks (Yes, they’re -Yoinking!-’ perks), and weapon skins. This isn’t the Halo I grew up with, and I’d be fine with that if they were actually doing something original with it.
Rather than attempt to forge their own new ground and really develop their own identity, it’s becoming increasingly clear that despite all of their PR-talk, 343 is shamelessly ripping pages from CoD’s playbook, scribbling some crayon over it and saying “LOOK IT’S HALO NOW!”. The gameplay may still have shields and BRs, but everything else is just so damn generic. I honestly chucked (I’m way too jaded to be upset anymore), by the fact that Halo 4 has a -Yoink- exclusive Best Buy skin that might as well have their label slapped all over it.
343, you guys had a chance to do your own thing with Halo…And this is what you do? Really? You had all the funding and backing in the world, and you decide “…-Yoink- it let’s just look at what every other shooter is doing. That’ll be good enough.”
Talk about lazy design. Sorry, but if you guys honestly believe that what you’re doing is something original and unique you’ve got your head on as upside down as Australia. I have no doubt that Halo 4 will be a competent, well-built, relatively bug-free FPS that has all the bells and whistles of a modern console game.
But we already have that. We have been spoon-fed this progression-system weapon-unlock customize-your-loadout stuff so many times before. I honestly don’t understand why you felt that Halo needed to just stuff itself in with that crowd.
“YEP! WE’RE ONE OF YOU NOW! LOOK AT ME I’M AN FPS ON THE ECKSBAWKS!”
Look, I still love you guys. Frankie, Jessica, and all you wonderful designers, artists, producers, what have you. You guys are great, and this isn’t a personal attack on any of you. You’re doing your jobs and making the best of it. I just don’t get what’s motivating you to go down such a generic, beaten path.
I could go on all day. Let’s just leave it at this: Halo 4 will not be bad for the series, or a bad game. What Halo 4 will do is reserve Halo’s seat at the “Generic FPS” table.
It’s about as bittersweet as it gets.
