But it’s definitely not Halo.
Please don’t misinterpret what I’m saying as “The game is bad” because that’s not the case at all. The game is good, superb in fact. But it is not Halo. And please don’t think I’m attacking the community because I’m not doing that either. I’m simply giving my opinion.
I’m not going to turn this into some long list of things that I don’t like or want nerfed or buffed or taken out entirely.
I’m simply going to express my disappointment in how 343 did the things they did. Not what they did or why they did; but how they did.
The main purpose of this game was not to make people happy, it wasn’t to win awards, and it wasn’t because someone thought it would be fun, though I don’t doubt the designers had a lot of passion for what they were doing.
This game was made to make money. Plain and simple, it was money. 343 biggest goal with this game was how could they appeal to the largest market of people possible. It was pretty simple really. Look at which games had the biggest following and go from there. It doesn’t take a genius to look at numbers and see where that audience is coming from. To make sure this new audience would stick around, things needed to be changed. Ordinance drops, loadouts, and other things were added to appeal to an audience that would otherwise never have given Halo a second glance.
This is not why I am disappointed with 343. These are the kinds of things games need to do to compete in an ever evolving market of triple A titles. They need to change so that people feel like they’re experiencing something new, something better than last time around. 343 has done this and they’ve done it very well.
What I AM disappointed in is the way they did it. Rather than find their own path and innovate Halo they instead imitated the formulas from other games. This has taken the unique feel that Halo had and replaced it with the same generic feel that comes with most other games. It feels like the multiplayer has lost its focus. I always used to think of Halo as a strategic, team based shooter. Halo 4 feels like a run and gun cluster–Yoink- that only rewards those who can find their way back into the meat-grinder fastest.
This isn’t a bad game. It does what it was intended to do very well and if this were any other franchise I’m sure I’d enjoy it more. But that’s not the way it is. It feels like 343 has thrown Halo’s oldest fans under the bus. Rather than breath life into this franchise they turned Halo into a generic shooter.
I’m not mad at 343 for running their business in the most profitable way possible. I’m not mad as the community who is going to enjoy this game regardless and in fact, I’m happy for them. I’m just disappointed because it feels like Halo has lost its identity. It feels like 343 changed Halo to make it more appealing at the cost of its oldest fans.
I know there are a lot of people who have been around since the beginning who love the game and I’m not trying to make them feel any less important than me. But I also know that I’m not the only one who feels like this.
This game isn’t bad, but its just not Halo.
