First of all, I like how the game plays. The engine is nice and the sandbox is great. I am talking specifically about multiplayer.
As someone who has both played Halo extensively (over 10 50s in H3, was #30 in cR in Reach, etc) and as someone who is interested in game development theory, I see a lot of decisions that make no sense in H5.
First of all, Splinter grenades. They tick every box for a toxic game element. They are inconsistent, have little counter play, and clutter the play space. They also have serious visual issues as well. It is extremely difficult to see the shards of the grenade, and they don’t indicate danger.
Next I would like to talk about ranked matchmaking. This is a trap that many developers fall into. The only two games I knew that handled this properly was Halo 3 and League of legends. It should be impossible for a party to match up against a team of random players. This creates a massive advantage for the party, and make solo searching extremely frustrating.
Lastly I would like to mention maps. There are many obstacles scattered around map that prevents movement. Halo has always been a game that thrived on simple geometry, please try to remember this going forward.
From a technical standpoint, Halo 5 is the most impressive Halo by far. A solid 60fps is very welcoming. The sound is marvelous. And the weapon sandbox is much better than in previous games. The netcode is the best I have ever seen.
I hate to say it, but I hope the director gets replaced. Gears of War Judgement had similar issues and it is apparent that he promotes frustrating game elements.

The MP lead on gears judgement works at 343. So, ya it appears as though this may be a one person kind of issue that could be resolved by his removal.

There is a lot of talent at 343. They just need a good lead.
Don’t really agree with the grenade comments, they have their use and can be really powerful or useless depending how they are used.
I think I agree with the ranking system comments since from what I can tell you’re focusing on the fact that parties can be matched with players that are searching solo. This can be very frustrating because teams of all solo players will 9 times out of 10 get stomped by a team simply because the team coordinate and communicate in ways that randoms will not. However it is hard to say whether or not it should be fixed as it may make matchmaking search times a lot higher in the case of the change, I know this wasn’t an issue during Halo 3 but that was due to the much higher population.
I also agree about the clutter on maps. Very often I get stuck on things when trying to move away from danger and get killed because of a little lip that I can’t move around when going backwards or sidewards. However the maps are very aesthetically pleasing and are very satisfying to look at and often this clutter has its use for tactics such as jumps.
With Splinter grenades, them being a tad difficult to see is kinda the point… and they “clutter” the playspace because they’re a “zoning tool.” They block passageways if you’re in a pinch. Nothing wrong with them…
What I do agree with you on is the useless geometry… How many times have I gotten stuck trying to back around a corner because 343 decided it was important to have a pipe jutting out of the wall, or a stupid metallic drum on the ground, or something of the sort? Too many times.
If it’s that important to include these details in the map, make them cosmetic items only! Take away their ability to effect gameplay! If the pipe or crack in the wall absolutely needs to be there, make it so players can pass through the geometry, or easily slide around it via invisible barriers…
And I can’t stand when grenades deflect back at you for the same reasons… because of there being a dumb little stud sticking out of the wall! It’s been an issue for me since Halo 3. Purple rooms on Construct anyone?
